I think this is a wonderful experiment, and i wish the gentleman continued success. While it's heartwarming, it's also utopian, and it would not be viable on a wide scale. The fellow's story itself and maybe his own personality are factors in the success.

Leet me recap what I said about my degree and others like it - economics is a fake subject. You sit around and theorize about events and no one knows a single thing - which is why no one knows what to do about the stimulus, much less the economy.

We're similar to those who give stock advice. The difference is that they ruin people in the short run, while economists do it in the long run.

So I woudn't be listening to those optimistic economists either if I were concerned about the price of coffee in Colombia.

Please don't apologize, I'm on your side here. I just have trouble not being obtuse. When I commented that mine's not an opinion, I said it was because my degree was in economics. I'd hoped you had seen my remarks about economists on my own blog, but just in case, I addded the little symbol in an effort to let you know I was being sarcastic - with myself.

You know, your comment leads me to think that you're not the only person who's missed my intended meaning over the last fourteen years?!?

They're gonna do it--"has he failed yet?...--but, the first wave isn't over yet--Inside Edition and CBS are still on the hook and almost every day another radio station wants an interview...

Brilliant. He truly deserves to succeed with this model. I use it myself. I fix people's computers but I usually don't set a price. Sometimes I do it for free, sometimes I do it for a meal, sometimes I'll specify an amount (if it's very little work). I've mostly gotten treated fairly, though one person saw fit to express his gratitude with a handshake and a smile. Unbelievably stingy for such a wealthy man but that's how it goes.

A friend of mine has been doing this in her a small wine restaurant in Berlin since the late nineties. It works quite well despite all doubts. Not too much of a new idea, I wonder what all that publicity is about.
