The Palestinian Authority is quickly sinking into quicksand of its own making - and has no one but itself to blame.

You are misjudging how the whole thing is perceived in the West. Never mind that everything has its ups and downs. At some point in the future the current European governments will be replaced by more pro Palestinian governments as part of the natural cycle. At this point we may find ourselves stuck in the West Bank with no ability to untangle ourselves from this mess. In fact, we may have got a just a few years to do it before it becomes impossible. And neither Jordan, nor Egypt has any inclination to annex the West Bank or Gaza. They are not kamikazes.

To NB

Once the West withdraws its diplomatic support, the Palestinian Authority will fold. Sixteen years of rejectionism cannot be tolerated by the West much longer.

The Palestinian Authority has not changed its negotiating position since 1993 adopting the identical stance taken by the Arab League since 1967.

Hamas has now wiped out any perceived power the Palestinian Authority exercised in Gaza. It is a hollow shell with no real political clout there. Gaza is a total basket case at the moment.

Jordan represents the only real Arab power with authority to bring the Arab residents of the West Bank under Arab-state protection.

If President Obama wishes to see the West Bank Arabs living in dignity under Arab statehood then he should pressure the Arab League to support Jordan's return to the West Bank - which it controlled from 1948-1967 - for the benefit of the Arabs who presently live there and who flourished during those 19 years.

If the Arab League does not respond to such pressure Israel will then have to deal with the the absence of any Arab negotiating partner within the framework of the legal rights granted to the Jewish people to reconstitute the Jewish National Home in the West Bank pursuant to the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine and the United Nations Charter.

Jordan has the chance to obtain sovereignty in about 95% of the West Bank. Will Jordan and the Arab world blow this opportunity or finally accept Israel's claim to sovereignty in that part of the West Bank that is already home to 500000 Jews?

There is now only one circuit breaker and that is Jordan. The Palestinian Authority has had its chance and has been a total failure.
You are making mistake of trying to think for these people. The key to understanding other people is not putting yourself in their boots, but putting these people in their boots. And I am telling you that you are misunderstanding the West. We are at the low of all lows in terms of our PR in the West.

As to Jordan, the king is busy all the time suppressing domestic opposition and gerrymandering voting districts to stop Jordan's version of Hamas from winning elections. He is absolutely not into upsetting the delicate balance between East Bankers and West Bankers by annexing another one million of Palestinians in the West Bank. The monarchy has already had one civil war because of the Palestinians. The king does not fancy himself with the idea of laying ground for the next one with his own hands.

Modern Western politicians see the "absence of war (or in many cases, ignoring it) is peace. As long as Cowards control governments, evil will continue it's advance.

To NB

The West has bent over backwards - diplomatically and financially - to support the creation of a new exclusively "Arabs only" 22nd Arab state for the first time in recorded history between Jordan and Israel.

Their thanks has been complete intransigence from the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League whose demand for sovereignty in 100% of the West Bank and Gaza remains unchanged and unyielding.

How many more slaps in the face is the West prepared to endure trying to rectify the mistakes of the Arab world in creating this new Arab state which the Arabs themselves could have created between 1948-1967?

Everyone has a breaking point and the West is rapidly getting to this position as Abbas thumbs his nose at the West's incredible support during the last 16 years that has failed to yield the slightest territorial movement or concession by the Arabs.

You have rightly adverted to Jordan's current problems. These will continue to be exacerbated so long as the Palestinian Authority refuses to ameliorate its negotiating stance and refuses to even reopen negotiations with Israel.

The Arab residents of the West Bank need someone else to step into the void on their behalf. That can only be Jordan - which offers those West Bank Arab residents the opportunity for self determination as citizens of Jordan freed from any Israeli control.

This is the only two state solution - Israel and Jordan with newly negotiated and agreed borders within the framework of their existing signed peace treaty - that stands a chance.

If Jordan refuses the West's overtures to open negotiations with Israel, then it should be made clear that Jordan will be on its own in dealing with the consequences of its decision. Coming crying to the West for military financial and diplomatic support will not be an option for King Abdullah should Jordan face any domestic problems as a result of its refusal to negotiate

To Gentile Warrior

There sure are plenty of cowards controlling western governments.

That's OK if you are not pouring billions of dollars into a bottomless pit and suffering continuing political ignominy in the process.

Everyone expects a bang for his buck. The West has only received a dud and a real fizzer in the shape of the Palestinian Authority.

It is time to move on and get Jordan involved.
