I really enjoyed Training with Hinako. It was a great video, featuring a cute girl with nice assets and also She "interacts" with the viewer in an entertaining way.

Sleeping with Hinako is a completely different story. The girl still cute but the interaction is just BORING...For most part of the video, you can check virtually every side of Hinako (I will leave that to your imagination), her sleeping habits, some dream sequences, etc...

But honestly...watching her sleeping for most part of the 45 minute video is some sort of torture...or maybe, thats the goal of the video...to make you sleep...Of course, that doesnt work if you have a fast forward button!

Another thing is the TV setting. You need a good TV and place it somewhere in a manner that you can fully enjoy the experience. I can recommend two ways...Words are not enough!

Source

Now, thats a really cool bed right?

Overall, for a cheap price and a virtual girl, you can enjoy the experience of sleeping with an anime character in "Sleeping with Hinako"....But I think there are better ways to enjoy the experience like Dakimakura for example...

A little bit expensive, but it is more interactive. One thing is for sure...I really want to know what other ideas, Hinako creators will bring next!

Tweet This Post

Dont blame Me...Thats the title for the post on "What Japan thinks"...Of course, the survey includes boyfriends as well...The real title for the survey is " moments when people realise as they have a dog they don’t need a partner." and was made by Goo Ranking

Demographics

Between the 18th and 21st of December 2009 1,077 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 51.0% of the sample were female, 8.7% in their teens, 15.3% in their twenties, 27.0% in their thirties, 27.8% in their forties, 11.9% in their fifties, and 9.3% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

Q: At what moments do you realise as you have a dog you don’t need a partner? (Sample size=1,077)

Rank

Score

1

When they’re so pleased to see me when I return home

100

2

When they snuggle up close just at the right times

71.1

3

When they know who’s boss

66.9

4

When they only relax when they are by my side

63.3

5

When they are ready and waiting behind the door when I return home

60.8

6

When they get so excited even just for walkies

49.4

7

However often I call them they always come running

47.6

8

Regardless of how foul a mood I am in they don’t get angry

45.8

9

Their sad cries whenever I am going to go out

45.2

10

When they are bored and drop their chins to the floor and look up at me

42.8

11

Even though I give them the same food every day they eat it with gusto

36.1

12

When they look up at me when out for walkies

29.5

13

They always look as if they are smiling

29.5

14

Even right after waking they are all ready to play

24.7

15

When they don’t get moody

22.3

16

When they never get bored retrieving the same toy

19.3

17

When they get so exited when they are going to be left home alone

16.3

18

When they wake me with a smiling face and a passionate kiss

13.3

19

When they eat scraps off the floor

9.6

20

When they get all groggy and car sick

3.6

<div style="position: absolute;

This is the final part of my week-long review of the 5 SOS Brigade characters. This shall be the final analysis of the SOS Brigade members' characteristics, actions, and predictions as to where his/her character will develop. Previously we've featured the rest of the SOS Brigade: Kyon, Haruhi, Yuki, and Mikuru. Since there is a lot of character development that is seen in the novels that have either not been animated or have not been released in a format that can be seen worldwide, I shall be using a spoiler tag that Toonleap has thankfully installed. Today is a great day for me, not that it's the final review, but rather that my favorite brigade member is being analyzed. We are now taking a look at the inner mechanisms of the SOS Brigade Second-in-Command: Itsuki Koizumi!

The first attributes that I think about with Koizumi is sheer intelligence and ability to adapt to situations. Whether it's finding out that he's stuck in an never ending loop or about to fight a giant cave cricket, he's always as cool as a cucumber. When Kyon and Mikuru start to panic and freak in weird situations, Koizumi will remain annoyingly calm and begin to think of a way to solve the solution.

It was his thinking that solved the baseball game, Mysterique Sign, avoided a possible disaster on the lone island, and he did come up with a viable solution to the problems in Sigh. Granted, he is not infallible as seen by the fact that even he couldn't stop the loops in Endless Eight nor had a solution to stop Haruhi's beam making power during the making of the movie, but he continued to think of possible ways to solve their problems.

Koizumi transferred into North High due to Haruhi Suzumiya's desire to have a transfer student and likely for direct observation from the Organization. Having seen Arakawa, Mori, and the Tamaru "brothers" we know that the Organization is much larger than what we know (just like the ITDE), so likely there were members present in the school, but not one that could be present in the SOS Brigade, thus Koizumi needed to transfer and become a member in the group Haruhi was creating for direct observation. We also know that Koizumi takes as much pride being in the SOS Brigade as Haruhi does due to being the vice-commander of the brigade and the chest-puffing he does in "Someday in the Rain" when Haruhi mentions that fact.

I believe that Koizumi feels that it is a great honor to have been chosen to observe Haruhi up close. He's very much in tune with her thoughts and emotions thanks to his esper powers (and the knowledge that they were given to him by her) and so he tries as much as he can to keep Haruhi happy not only as a way to thank her for his gift, but for the ability to not have to use his gift. Show Spoiler ▼

I'm one of the few people who believes that Koizumi is not in love with Kyon, but rather that he's fallen for Haruhi instead. In Disappearance he's mostly the same person when compared to the rest of the brigade, even paying for the food (with extra money like his job for the Organization) and he blatantly states that he fancies Haruhi. I say that he's only helping Kyon because he knows that he has no chance to be with Haruhi as she's for Kyon instead and competition through the brigade members would only cause a breakdown of the brigade (as stated in Endless Eight). Haruhi even asks if he has plans with a girlfriend during plans for the Christmas Party and his only response was "How pleasant that would be if it were the case."

There's a line in Sigh when Koizumi is talking about the color change of the pigeons where he states "I'm sorry, I must have sounded like our task is to save the world." Koizumi truly feels like everything he is doing is for the safety of the world and as such, he must remain serious about the task (like a true shounen hero). He must be ready to battle avatars at a moment's notice, even in the middle of the night as in Melancholy's New World. That may be why he's always explaining things in a detailed explanation, so that the surrounding members know his plan like in Mysterique Sign and can adapt and/or help.

What's the most interesting thing about Koizumi is that unlike the others, he never gets a starring role in any of the stories. Kyon is the narrator, but he's featured a lot throughout the series in different episodes and stories; Haruhi has Melancholy and Sigh to herself; Yuki takes over Day of Sagittarius and part of Mysterique Sign; Mikuru has Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody and the Adventures of Asahina Mikuru to star in; however, Koizumi never got featured in an anime episode as a main character.

Koizumi has interesting relationships with the other members. He obviously cares a lot about Haruhi as his primary objective is to make sure she is happy and well, and that means that Kyon has to help him by not aggrivating her too much. Since he and Kyon are the only males in the brigade, it's natural that they would bond together, and their friendship does start to grow (seen best in Day of Sagittarius when they are the two planners of the game). I can't say whether or not he truly cares for Yuki, but he does assist her throughout the series as best he can.Show Spoiler ▼

He also tends to notice the changes going on in Yuki throughout the novels, so I say while she may not be his biggest concern, he does notice her and try to involve her.

His most intriguing relationship is with Mikuru. As Yuki stated, their beliefs cannot co-exist because the fact of one completely negates the fact of the other. Having said that, Koizumi was called about the endless loops before Kyon was. Since Yuki doesn't speak much to the other members, it would be highly likely that the person she called first wasn't Kyon, but Koizumi. Whether that was due to Koizumi's closeness with Haruhi's mental states or the fact that he may have mentioned deja vu to Mikuru off-panel I don't know, but it indicates a closeness that we haven't seen otherwise.

Since Yuki wasn't meant to talk very much in the series, Koizumi takes over as the instructor for what's going on for the reader. Not only that, but he uses his role as the second-in-command in order to help plan brigade activities such as the trip to the lone island. Show Spoiler ▼

I find it interesting that Koizumi states he's so busy now in Dissociation. It feels like Tanigawa is setting up for him to be away so much when Kyon needs his help to figure out what is going on with the Anti-SOS Brigade.

I'd like to see a day in the life of Koizumi; it'd be fascinating to see how much thought goes into making sure the stability of the world is ensured everyday.

Since Koizumi is simply an actor playing the role of a teenage esper, he only has one route to advance his character: show his real personality. I think we'll get to see glimpses of it throughout the series. Unfortunately for him, I feel that after being in his role for so long he may lose track of who he's supposed to be and end up being the Koizumi he's acting as. Show Spoiler ▼

He's been the most static character so far throughout the novel since we're first introduced to him. I think everyone around him changes to accompany his quirks, but other than that he's stayed mostly the same. Along those lines, we can't assume that everything we know about Koizumi is always fact. He's mentioned several times throughout the novels that he wishes that he will be able to show Kyon the real him and that they can still be friends.

It'll be interesting to see if Koizumi will ever elaborate on the things he mentioned in Sigh like the other organizations or the TEFI abbreviation. Just when you think you know all there is to know about Koizumi, he'll surprise you with something new (that's likely plot related). That's why it's really difficult to nail down a complete analysis of him and/or the Organization. We just can't take everything he says as word though. He may be lying, like about the theory about Haruhi being God as his theory, but there's always a reason for a lie in place of a truth, especially in the mouth of a plot detailer.

So with that, this five part series is over. I hope you enjoyed reading and thinking about it as much as I have. At this time (barring revisions of Koizumi's post before it gets posted) the series is at 6,334 words long. I'd like to mention that my honors thesis in university was only 4,714 words and I've beat that by over 1,500 words just on five characters in a show in about 100 hours typing. If that doesn't detail how interesting these characters (and how much I care about this show) is, I don't think there's anything that can. I've truly enjoyed every minute detailing all the little characteristics I've noticed, and learning about the ones I've missed from you readers. I hope that after the rest of these stories get animated that we can come back and look at the theories we've developed and see where we were wrong and right.

As I've mentioned before, if you want to comment on stories that are chronologically after "Someday in the Rain", please put
(without the space) before the spoiler and
(without the space) after it. I have to give a lot of credit to the posters at the AnimeSuki forums. They've helped me develop a lot of my thoughts and have somewhat influenced a few points. Thank you for reading!

Tweet This Post

This is the fourth part of my week-long series where I'm analyzing what we know about the SOS Brigade members' personalities, actions, and where I believe their future lies in the series. Previously we've looked at Kyon, Haruhi, and Yuki. Today we take a look at the official Secretary of the SOS Brigade and unofficial mascot: Mikuru Asahina. I want to continue giving thanks to Toonleap for installing a spoiler plugin so that I can mention stories that either have not been animated or will not be seen by anyone outside of Japan until a DVD (and possibly Blu-Ray) release. As such, I ask that if you have not read the novels, please do not click on the spoiler tabs. The books and anime are wonderfully constructed and you will get a greater sense of enjoyment through watching/reading the stories than by being spoiled. Well, that's time that cannot come back, so let's travel with our lovely hostess: Mikuru Asahina!

Mikuru suffers from an intense lack of self-esteem in herself, which I feel is only emphasized because everyone around her has some sense of importance. Haruhi can change the world, Kyon has done so many things to maintain the stability of the world, Yuki can freely manipulate data at a whim, and Koizumi is part of the Shonuen Esper Sentai. Mikuru thought she was meant to come back to the present day and simply watch for strange things around Haruhi Suzumiya, but instead she got captured for a reason she doesn't quite understand.

The one adventure anime watchers have seen Mikuru undergo is the trip back to Tanabata three years ago and she gets put to sleep less than a minute into the adventure and loses the only device that could take them back to their time. From her perspective, all she does is dress up and gets scared. Her one big act of courage was to jump into the dirty water in Sigh, and that's little compared to what the others have done. Show Spoiler ▼

However, she does play a big role in Intrigues and the Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina where her actions do help to prevent the future from being damaged.

Having said that, Mikuru's character is improving bit by bit. After her fall in Sigh, the only time she complains and doesn't gut through something is the costume changes in Someday in the Rain. She's slowly getting stronger, which is wonderful to see as a viewer, but tough as an experience. Show Spoiler ▼

Look at all the adventures she and Kyon go through in Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina and Intrigues to maintain the stability of the future. She never once complains, but realizes that she's got to do something or else. She only worries when they can't find the device, but for the future she comes from, not for her personal failure. She continues to progress through writing the fairytale and even learns how to illustrate to make her own work shine in Editor in Chief. Mikuru steadily improves throughout the series and it's going to be wonderful to see how the latter stories compare to the Melancholy(Haruhi) version of Mikuru.

To be honest, the character of Mikuru Asahina is difficult to discuss because there are two versions: young and adult. For every emotional flaw that the high school version begins with, the adult version has overcome it and is almost a different character due to that experience. Young Mikuru is afraid of her looks while the adult version has no problems dressing in a sultry manner (and even showing off to Kyon her mole). The young version is limited due to the brainwashing and hypnosis that she underwent before coming back while the adult version doesn't have the problems to that extent.

(Big) Mikuru, as she's called in the novel, still couldn't tell Kyon that he will Vanish with Haruhi to a world she creates in Melancholy or who he'll meet in Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, but that's more than what the smaller version could. Show Spoiler ▼

As Kyon suggests, it's very likely that the adult Mikuru is the boss of younger Mikuru, which is why she couldn't see her supervisor since she didn't see herself. In Intrigues, the adult version of Mikuru states that Kyon is going to have to make a choice soon and that her future depends on that choice. The present version of Mikuru will not be affected by the change too much, but the adult Mikuru knows exactly what choice Kyon has to make in order for her future to survive, but can't tell him what it's about to not influence him.

There's no way to start a paragraph with this spoiler, but I need to state these facts: in Snow Mountain Syndrome Koizumi states that he will betray the Organization for the SOS Brigade if need be. In Intrigues Yuki makes the same promise for herself. Kyon has chosen the brigade over his and Haruhi's own good twice (both Vanishing worlds). Haruhi founded the brigade and will defend it from anyone (after the events of Melancholy of course). The only person who has not sworn their loyalty to the brigade is Mikuru and I find that so interesting! Does Tanigawa plan to have Mikuru be the one to betray the brigade? I don't think so, but everyone else has placed the brigade above everyone else around them but her. She still continues to take orders from the future and follow those missions. I'm piqued by the thought that her growth may come from having to betray going back to the future in order to stay an SOS Brigade member.

I do believe that there is mutual attraction between Kyon and Mikuru, but it cannot happen. If Kyon gets into a full relationship with Mikuru, he'll lose his closeness to Haruhi and she'll become antisocial again. Mikuru cannot get into a relationship because she's not in this time period and will have to go back someday. There's some hints to this throughout the series as well as the chiding from Adult Mikuru.

At the end of Melancholy, she immediately goes to hug Kyon before having to back away in case Haruhi saw them. The picture of Kyon sleeping and grabbing onto him during Mysterique Sign are another set of good examples, but the fact that the adult Asahina mentions that his reward is to give her a kiss, but only while she's sleeping during BLR is what sealed it for me. Show Spoiler ▼

Again, he could kiss her after returning from fixing the events of Disappearance/Vanishment.

I think that Adult Mikuru remembers how much she began to like Kyon and as such fulfills a dream of being kissed by him when she teases him about rewards. She may not be able to remember being kissed, but the sheer action would be wonderful in her mind. It's romantic in a forbidden sense that the only time her dream can come true is a time where she has no chance of remembering it.

One aspect that interests me is why Mikuru came back to this time period. Kyon was pulled into this mess by Haruhi, Yuki was made by the ITDE, Koizumi was given his powers, but Mikuru had to choose to come back to this time. She left her friends, likely her family, and a comfortable surrounding to travel to a time period that she had studied in prior classes.Show Spoiler ▼

I think it's quite telling that Kyon comments that she has an interest in archeology (which should be anthropology if Tanigawa wasn't translated properly) given the fact that she's always looking to study things like tea leaves, maid characteristics, and other various things that a scholar from the future would have studied.

It will be interesting to see if Tanigawa decides to comment on that through young or adult Mikuru.

For Mikuru, the question is not "where does she progress as a character" but rather "when shall she progress" since we've seen the future version of herself. We're seeing bits and pieces of how the future Mikuru gathers her confidence from, but it will be interesting to see if there is an event that triggers a bunch of changes.

Since there's only one member left: PREPARE FOR THE KOIZUMI EXTRAVAGANZA TOMORROW! If you'd like to comment on anything that occurs after "Someday in the Rain" chronologically, please place your comment between
and
(without the spaces) as to ensure that no one will be accidentally spoiled. Thanks!

Tweet This Post

Sorry for the late post, I was waiting for some information to become available to the public. Currently, the first week of the Haruhi movie's run is over in Japan. According to this news site, the Haruhi movie has raked in 200,000,000 yen in one week's worth of showings and has been seen by nearly 140,000 people in Japan. Keep in mind that only 24 theatres are showing this movie! The movie was ranked in the 6th/7th spot on the weekly rankings with only 2 days worth of showings, and it's still going strong. With another busy weekend, the movie could actually increase its ranking for the second weekend. This is a huge hit in Japan and I'm starting to fear that a DVD/Blu-ray release is going to instantly sell out of stores.

That is the official Disappearence guidebook. If you've been shopping on Amazon Japan for books, you might have seen it. It's only the highest selling book in Entertainment and is 14th overall in all of Japanese books on the site (with only 4 days being in the top 100, meaning it's a huge spike in sales). I'm glad I pre-ordered it a couple days ago because I don't know if/when I'll get a copy. To sum this up, it is truly Haruhi mania in Japan right now. I wish I could be there to experience it.

Tweet This Post

More Akira Live Action news!

It seems there are some good news for Akira fans. Apparently, the movie will be directed by some famous brothers...and the movie is not going to be a single shot one...

Warner Bros. is negotiating to reteam with The Book of Eli's Hughes brothers to have them direct a live-action remake of the cult favorite Akira, from a script by Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. (Akira is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's company, Appian Way, along with Andrew Lazar, who’s also currently producing an adaptation of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex for Warners.)

Respecting the source's complexity (or perhaps acquiescing to it), Warners won’t proceed with a single, live-action remake of the film, which trimmed away the last half of the 2,182-page graphic novel in order to weigh in at just over two hours. Instead, we hear that the studio is planning to make Akira in two parts, with the first three volumes of the six-volume manga making up the first film, due out next year.

An official release from the studio is expected later this week.

Source: Vulture / NY Magazine

I still have to watch The Book of Eli but at least, Akira will receive some justice by doing a two part movie of it...Lets just hope it does not plummet at the Box Office.

Tweet This Post

Analyzing the SOS Brigade – Part I: Kyon

One of the big differences in Japanese literature and American literature is the emphasis placed on emotions and characterization compared to plots. When you think about it, most of the plots in the Haruhi Suzumiya series are rather simplified, but it's the characters that really differentiate the plots from being commonplace. In this series of posts (which was one long post originally, but I spaced them out to aid you readers from becoming too bored) I hope to look into what we know about each of the characters and where/why they are growing different than when we first meet them. I'd also like to thank Toonleap for putting in a spoiler plug-in so I can mention things that happen after Someday in the Rain without having to worry about spoiling people unwillingly. If you click the spoiler button, prepare for spoilers from all 9 books. I've tried to include enough analysis without diving too much into non-animated stories, but if you've read the novels, you know that the character development only ramps up after Disappearance, so it's tough to discuss the characters without including information from those books.

Of course we have to being with our snarky narrator since he is the first person we meet. Kyon's biggest characteristic throughout the entire series is his procrastination. He's the same as Haruhi in his desires for something to happen, but he's more ingrained in day-to-day life for him to go and deal with it. He's the real-life equivalent of a message board reader who complains but doesn't want to do anything to change it. For readers of the novels, you'll see that the biggest example is waiting until January 2nd to finish his duties. For people who've just watched the anime, your best example is not being able to end the loops in Endless Eight. Because Kyon procrastinates so much, he becomes dependent on the people around him. He begins to rely solely on Koizumi and Yuki during the summer and fall to be able to solve the problems and he'll only act when he's the last line of defense (such as the not!punch towards Haruhi and waiting for Koizumi in Closed Space at the end of Melancholy). It takes something really big for Kyon to actually be proactive in solving a problem by himself before it becomes even bigger. This procrastination really makes Kyon's character uneven. He has difficulties understanding the events that surround him and do well in school, but he's able to rattle off references and solve solutions like how to get back to his world in Melancholy with relative ease. Show Spoiler ▼

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED, CLICK BACK! Of course, once Kyon actually becomes more proactive by finishing the Disappearance novel, he stays that way throughout Intrigues and during Dissociation by taking action on the locker notes and meeting with the anti-SOS brigade. He does fall back into his ways while writing the romance manuscript, but he easily finishes it ahead of time, which is more than he did during Endless Eight. Once Kyon has the question in Disappearance posed to him: "What do you want in a world: to stay as you are now, or to go back into an exciting world that may change?" and he chooses the latter option, he does mature and begin to take charge. He's noticeably different in the later novels compared to the first one, except romantically. One great example is his phone call immediately to Haruhi to begin actions after Michru is kidnapped. He immediately takes action with his trump card (Haruhi) instead of waiting for someone else to do something.

Kyon is our narator, which means he's both reliable and unreliable. When you read the novel, Tanigawa had to hold suspense for big relevations such as Ryoko in the classroom. This means that Kyon has to have that struggle in classwork so that it would be logical for Kyon to not be able to see things coming before they do. It also helps to make Kyon the everyman that the reader can identify with.

Kyon overly is infatuated with Mikuru and begins to be towards Yuki after Endless Eight, but he is still subconciously attracted to Haruhi first and foremost due to similarities between the two. If it wasn't apparent in Melancholy, it's throughout the story that those two will become a couple. Just look at how the first book ended and how Tanigawa had to open book two. Kyon and Haruhi were out together and he confesses the truth to her. Unfortunately for Tanigawa, the series took off and he had to find a way to finish the conversation while remaining in character. I like to say that Kyon has "main male character amnesia" where the readers know who he really has feelings for, but the character himself doesn't as to not ruin the story.Show Spoiler ▼

Kyon, to some extent, likes the way that he's treated by Haruhi. If he simply wanted to be with Haruhi, he could've stayed in the Disappearance world and been with a Haruhi who treated him much nicer and with more respect than the one we know. Instead, he chose to be with a girl that frustrates him and makes things more complicated, but has become more caring towards him. It's become almost too repetitious on having Kyon choose Haruhi all the time since he chose in Melancholy to kiss her and make her think it's a dream, he chose her in Disappearance to come back to the "normal world," and he chose her against Sasaki since adult Mikuru told him that if he doesn't make the right choice, that future won't exist. Kyon also suffers from "main male character amnesia" where he will hurt the feelings of every girl that likes him without knowing it. He chose Haruhi over Yuki in Disappearance and he continues to let Mikuru down when Haruhi makes her do stuff she doesn't want to do. Not to mention he's dense when it comes to Haruhi's own feelings for him that he won't recognize. If I had to mention one thing that drives me up the wall for Kyon, it's that. I just want to grab him and make him see how he's making the three girls feel!

To conclude, Kyon shares a lot in common with Haruhi in the desire for something strange to happen, but whereas Haruhi will actively go out and search, Kyon would rather be lazy and have it happen to him. If he overcame that laziness and his inability to see how others feel in a certain manner, he would be a much better protagonist in that world. His snarkiness and sarcasm make the series very enjoyable for new readers and I do enjoy hearing his comments on everything. I personally see Kyon as taking that next step and moving past his faults to finally confront his flaws and end the series with a very important choice: does he really want to be with Haruhi in a true relationship or not? I easily can see Tanigawa leaving that final decision on a cliffhanger and never returning because he feels he's left enough hints to finish the story.

I'm glad I waited to have this post published now as we have some news in a review post! The cover of the final Limited edition DVD for the 2009 episodes will featureKyon!

Tweet This Post

This is a continuation of a five part series where I'm looking at each of the members of the SOS Brigade and analyzing their characters. Part I was Kyon, as seen here and today's part is on the titular character: Haruhi Suzumiya. Since the post-Someday in the Rain stories have much more character development (in my opinion) than the 28 anime episodes, I felt that it'd be impossible for me to discuss the characters without including some conversation on those stories. I have to thank Toonleap for installing a spoiler plugin (even for him since he hasn't read the stories either) so that these posts won't spoil anyone who does not wish to be spoiled. DO NOT CLICK THE SHOW SPOILERS LINK UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED! I really enjoyed reading the novels without knowing what happened and I want everyone to have that choice. Without further ado, here is the Brigade leader, Haruhi Suzumiya:

Out of all the brigade members, I feel that Haruhi is the most detailed (mostly from the first novel). I feel that Haruhi is emotionally, and very likely socially still a child. Her actions are rash and without consideration of others, until her growth in November from Sigh and the ensuing recovery in Live a Live. She wanted so much to believe that there was something special about the people around her in elementary school and when she realized how small of a world it is, it broke her heart tremendously. She began to isolate herself with the thought that there must be someone special out there and her attitude scared away friends and potential suitors in middle school, especially after she meets John Smith. John was the first person that didn't immediately rebuke her beliefs. He stayed in her mind until she met Kyon and had a second friend. Show Spoiler ▼

The greatest example of this is in Disapperance!World where she visibly falters when Kyon reveals his alter-ego. She's immediately different than the normal Haruhi and becomes much kinder to Kyon, even willing to tie her hair in a pony tail simply because he is John Smith

Think about how weird her reputation was in middle school: a girl who's actively seeking out things that "don't exist." In a world of structure, order, and tradition like Japan is, Haruhi stands out and becomes known as the eccentric outcast during a very important time period where a lot of social skills either begin to or fully develop. She doesn't fit in with guys due to gender differences and she doesn't fit in with girls due to her fantasy interests. After two and 2/3rds years waiting for someone interesting to find her, she enters North High and can't find where John is, even though she goes through every club and throughout the school looking for him or the person he mentioned. She even cuts her hair to a length like it was in middle school. Once Kyon finally begins to talk to her, I believe she felt a kinship and began giving him the time of day.

I feel that Kyon is the second most important person to her (after her parents and John Smith) because he was the next person to begin to understand her. She's deathly afraid of losing his friendship (as seen in Sigh) and begins to change for him. I do agree with Koizumi's statement in Day of Sagittarius about the level of trust between her and Kyon. He points out in that story that she's trusting him to win, and that's only emphasized by her willingly giving herself up as a prize instead of Mikuru or Yuki. One could argue that the kick to the Computer Society President's head is even protective of Kyon as there were five people around him challenging him and she immediately acts without listening to the details. In Japan where marriage and relationships isolate a couple from others based on cultural standards, the simple act of Kyon falling for Mikuru or Yuki would be heartbreaking to Haruhi. Show Spoiler ▼

Just look at her reactions in Disturbance when she sees the love note to Yuki in Kyon's handwriting and her reaction to hearing about Kyon and Mikuru's adventure to save the boy. She's immediately mad without giving a chance to respond about the situation, showing her instability with Kyon's friendship. We also can't forget the massive increase in Avatars and closed space when Sasaki comes into the picture. She does begin to change for the better with regards to the other brigade members. In Snow Mountain Syndrome, she's deathly worried for Yuki and orders Kyon to see her afterwards. In Intrigues, she does make the girls make chocolates for Koizumi as well as Kyon. As for Mikuru, I'm currently at a loss at the moment about how Haruhi changes her opinion of her. If Kyon does reveal his identity to her, I imagine she'd start acting like her Disappearance counterpart did towards him, though that may come through time naturally as they spend more time together.

She can't ask him out, it's completely improper because the guy is supposed to ask the girl in person according to her wishes in Melancholy, so that leaves the procrastinator to gather the courage if they will become a couple.

So the next question about Haruhi is where does she go next? She's got an enormous power that she isn't aware of and is truly as Kyon described "a ticking time bomb." If Haruhi ever found out that she has this god-like power, I think she'd break down and cry due to the magnitude of it rather than enjoy the feeling. Everything in the series has happened due to her subconscious wishes, but if she knew about it, she'd have to concentrate to make sure everything remained the same every moment of everyday. If she became mad, she could wipe out a person's existence and no one would know the difference. I can picture her saying "Hey Kyon, how can I stop this?" because she knows she couldn't control it. She has an amazing amount of common sense, like Koizumi said, and that would force her to find a way to give up her power. Show Spoiler ▼

This could be the way that the power gets transferred to Sasaki and then she realizes how special her friends really are.

In conclusion, Haruhi's actions during her middle school years set her emotional and social growth back to a point where she's just now starting to realize how she should act around friends. This also means that she treasures her new friends more due to the lack of companionship in middle school as seen by not wanting the first summer that she's spent with her special friends to end. Her psuedo-relationship with Kyon should only grow as time goes on into what I feel will be a full relationship. The final situation with Haruhi is what to do with her power. I believe that the most likely situation will be that she'll grow into a "normal" person as time goes on and as that happens, she'll gradually lose her power and the world will become normal again. Show Spoiler ▼

Just like it was happening between Disappearance and Dissociation before Sasaki came into the picture.

Tweet This Post

This is a continuation of the analysis of the SOS Brigade where I am reviewing over each of the 5 SOS Brigade members and looking at their personalities, characteristics and where they may be heading towards in future stories. Previously I featured my analysis on Kyon and Haruhi. Today we take a look at the sole Literature Club member: Yuki Nagato. Once again, Toonleap has graciously added a spoiler tag so that I may mention material from stories that have not been animated. I ask that if you haven't read the novels, please do not click on the spoiler tag because it may ruin your future experiences with the anime or novels if you choose to read them. It is worth it to continue along the ride until you join our group who are yelling at Tanigawa to finish novel 10. Now we move forward to the most popular character in the Haruhi Suzumiya series: Yuki Nagato!

Yuki is the easiest to notice changes throughout the series for most fans. She starts out as a emotionless cyborg-like person who knows the answers to any question and can accomplish any physical or mental task. I picture her at the beginning as a computer with access to an immense database of information which can alter said database, but in an organic body. Yuki is almost limitless with her abilities to manipulate data and attributes of places, people, weather, etc.

Over time, Yuki began to experience the chemical and mental changes that come with being in an organic body and she started to develop emotions (likely during the 594/595 years she spent in Endless Eight) and started to enjoy being an organic lifeform. It's easily present in the month of November where she begins to play the guitar in Live a Live and work with the computers of this day in Day of Sagittarius. One could also say that reading all the science fiction that she does through the three years is also enjoyable since she continues to perform that task over and over.

Kyon makes the remark that Haruhi considers her classmates to be like potatoes, but Yuki fits that description much better than Haruhi ever could. She hardly speaks in class (as told to us by Kunikida) and she barely interacts with the other brigade members besides Kyon. For such a person that continues through the normal day-to-day proceedings of life, she actually misses a day in the classroom after the required ceremony on September 1st. It's the first time she's not present in the clubroom during an afternoon without something happening that we know of.

It's difficult to say whether or not Yuki grew to favor Kyon or whether that is a side effect of the synchronization during Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody having seen the events of the future. Regardless of how it happened, it's obvious that Yuki favors Kyon moreso than any of the other members of the brigade, even the one she's supposed to be observing: Haruhi. She does mention that she would like to go again to the library with Kyon.

Kyon is the one person she talks to most of the time unless the rest of the brigade is in a tough situation as seen in "Someday in the Rain" where she didn't speak once. She begins to follow anything that Kyon tells her to do and even lets him make decisions for her like in "Day of Sagittarius." Show Spoiler ▼

Really a better example would be in the Disappearance novel or calling out his name (or something to that extent so that Haruhi would recognize it) in Snow Mountain Syndrome, but these are spoilers and I can't mention them yet without this spoiler bar. Yuki tells Kyon that her abilities are password protected but she does not know the password after her punishment in Disappearance. Since there is no one that is mentioned to know the password, it is probable that Yuki told Kyon the password and helped him forget it until he needs to know it. I think what some people glance over is that she may have been undertaking her outer punishment for not for changing the world, but her inner punishment for attempting to ensnare the key to everything and failing. After locking her abilites away, she is much freer to begin to live life as a normal human, but she's not able to contact the ITDE as well (from Snow Mountain Syndrome). This also plays a big role in how much she's likely hurt when Kyon asks her to go to the library in Intrigues, but only as a cover for his actions.

Yuki was pretty much emotionless for the first few minutes before she met Kyon in Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody on Tanabata 3 years ago until she synchronized with herself 3 years later on that day. Unfortunately for those who haven't seen or read Disappearance, a lot of her development begins post-world change. Show Spoiler ▼

Likely due to the fact that she's set herself apart from the IDTE compared to the other organic lifeforms by choosing to be different.I believe that Mikuru is halfway right when she says that Yuki wants to be like her. In Disappearance, the Yuki character and Mikuru are VERY similar. The only point that Yuki would change herself to be like Mikuru would be to attract Kyon to herself rather than Mikuru in the new world. As we know, Kyon chooses the old world, so Yuki isn't staring at Mikuru because she wants to be like her, she's staring because she made herself like Mikuru, yet Kyon didn't choose her and she doesn't know why. I imagine that it had to hurt when Kyon called her to request to be with her twice through the weekend, and even to go to the library only to find out that it wasn't meant to be together.

It's not really surprising that Yuki is the most popular person in the series because she's got so much room to grow and people want to help her grow either with Kyon as a stronger character.

The next question is where does Yuki go from Someday in the Rain. Novel readers will know why there's a different Yuki in Disappearance and the rest of the fanbase will gobble up the movie incredibly quickly if the novel fanbase is as reflective of the anime fanbase. It's tough to say where I think her character is going to move towards without listing a spoiler, so I'll be as vague as I can be without losing clarity.

Yuki has a tough decision ahead of her as to where she wants to progress: towards staying part of the IDTE or closer to experiencing more of these emotions she has during the SOS activities. I can see Tanigawa taking Yuki in both directions, so I feel each side is as likely as the other. With the events in the fifth and ninth novel, Yuki can't afford to go towards being human and completely leave the IDTE, but can she sacrifice her growing experiences with emotions in order to save everyone (which would ironically be a "human" sacrifice as seen in a lot of tokusatsu)? I think Tanigawa has left himself wide open with the character of Yuki and we'll just have to see where his road takes us.

Tweet This Post

If you want to taste Japan, there is a good chance to do so, thanks to Kit Kat...

Nestle has given one of the most popular and long-established chocolate bars in the world a uniquely Japanese make-over.

Kit Kat bars are now available in 19 new flavours that reflect specialities from regions across Japan, ranging from sweet potatoes from Okinawa to melons from Hokkaido, strawberries from Tochigi, green tea from Kyoto and soy sauce from Tokyo.

Launched late last year, Nestle said it hopes people will buy the lines – which are only available in Japan – as souvenirs or as gifts. The company has also teamed up with Japan Post to produce boxes that can be sent through the mail when a Y140 (€1.14) stamp is attached and one side of the box has a blank space for a message – in much the same way as people send postcards from a holiday destination.

"Giving gifts is an important part of Japanese culture and we like to travel, so we wanted to combine these two things together," Miki Kanoh, a spokeswoman for the Kobe-based company, told Relaxnews.

Other flavours include pungent wasabi – a green horseradish that is more commonly found in sushi – apple, chili, miso, cherries and strawberry cheese cake from Yokohama.

And with the school and university exam season upon Japanese students, Kit Kats have also been finding their way into school lunch boxes as a good luck charm. Kit Kat, an expression invented in Britain in the 1930s, sounds close to "kitto katsu," a Japanese exam-season mantra that literally means "I'll do my best to make sure I succeed." Tens of thousands of students will find the snacks in their lunch boxes over the coming weeks, mostly placed there by ambitious parents anxious for their success.

Source: The Independent / Nestle Official site

I could taste almost any taste from this...except Wasabi...I prefer that on Sushi!...

Tweet This Post
