BloggersBase Newsletter March 2009

Welcome to the monthly BloggersBase Newsletter,

We are happy to present our third newsletter for March’09 and share with you everything that is going on at BloggersBase, explain the new features, answer your questions, and provide useful tips to the BloggersBase community.

We are doing our best efforts in order to keep BloggersBase contents relevant and interesting to our visitors. Recently, after hearing complaints from bloggers about not being able to fit their posts into any of the existing categories, we have decided to let you – bloggers and readers – an opportunity to determine which subjects interest the community more than others.

Hence, we have added an ‘Upcoming Blogs’ section to our site. These blogs follow the standard rules of competition, and though not offering cash prizes at present, they might do so in the future, based on their popularity. The best part is that subjects of these blogs are proposed by the bloggers themselves, assuring that you will never run into situation of being unable to find a proper blog for your post.

In order to publish your post in one of the upcoming blogs, you need to click the ‘Cannot find an appropriate blog?’ link at the last tab of the publishing wizard. If you still do not find a fitting blog, you can select ‘Propose a new blog’ option and propose a new blog.

Upon reviewing your proposal:

·         If accepted a new upcoming blog is launched containing your post, with you as its first active blogger.

·          If your suggestion is very similar to an existing blog topic, your post will be published in its respective goldmines.

·          If for some reason (inappropriate/vulgar topic, post topic does not match suggested topic, etc.) your proposal is rejected, your post will remain in your personal blog.

For more information on this exciting new feature, please consult our FAQ section.

Until now all hyper links within articles on BloggersBase were automatically marked with “NoFollow” attribute, meaning that search engines would ignore this outgoing link. The reason for this measure was to combat link spam, especially considering the fact that everybody can post on BloggersBase.

The recent feature is meant to reward the bloggers who write quality posts. By the end of the competition time slot, all posts authored by the bloggers placed first and second during that time slot in that blog will be marked as “DoFollow”.

Q: Does my previous reputation affect the competition status in the current Timeslot?

A: No. The blog competition grade of the blogger is not affected by his or her previous achievements, giving the new bloggers and the veterans the same chances of success.

Q: I won a competition and filled in my PayPal account field. Why am I still receiving error emails from BloggersBase?

A: The most probable reason is that the PayPal account name you supplied is invalid. A PayPal account name must be in the form of an email address. If this is indeed the case, you should open your PayPal account and re-check your settings. If you believe that the information there is correct, please do not hesitate to contact us directly by email, by the ‘contact us’ form or by using the feedback widget at the bottom of each page (don't forget to supply an email if you're using the last option).

Q: I have accidentally closed my profile widget and it has disappeared. How can I restore it?

A: Expand the ‘Add More Widgets’ panel to the left, check the ‘My Profile’ option and press the ‘Save’ button. Make sure that you are logged in while doing this.

Q: I have posted a Nugget to the ‘Politics’ blog, but now I have an even better post ready. Why can’t I post more than one nugget per Timeslot in one blog? Can I replace my previous Nugget with the new one?

A: After publishing a nugget, there is no option to replace it or to post another one in the same blog for the current Timeslot (week) duration. We put this restriction in order to protect the bloggers competing in the Goldmine from potential spammers who would place many low quality nuggets, reducing exposure of their competitors’ work.

When replying to someone’s comment, it is preferable to answer as a direct reply to that comment instead of placing your comment into the root channel. The main benefit of this practice is the fact that the author of the comment you are responding to will most likely receive a notification regarding your reply (if they so chose) and will be able to read and respond to what you had to say, with the exception for the anonymous commenter.

In order the reply directly to the comment one must press the ‘Respond’ link at the upper right corner of the comment box.

Bloggers have realized long ago that decorating the post with an image can make wonders in terms of reader enjoyment, article readability and will have a positive effect on the general impression from the post. Here at BloggersBase we see that our bloggers utilize the concept of post beautification almost to its full scale, by inserting images, embedding videos, using color highlighting and converting textual links to HTML hyperlinks.

Picking an appropriate image for your post can be a harder task than many would expect. After doing that, the finishing (and important) touch is to place the image in a way that will make your post attractive to a reader. While browsing articles at BloggersBase, I often note that a significant portion of the bloggers have trouble with aligning the images to the article text in a way that will make their post a joy to behold. In the simple tutorial below I will explain how to place images inside text sections with only few mouse clicks.

As usual, we start with writing the text and adding the image:

Some of the bloggers publish posts that look like the one above. Let's change the properties of the image to make it fit better with the text. We need to right click on the image inside the editor, open the ‘Image Properties’ dialog window and change the attributes in the following fashion:

Now our post looks much better:
