Governing the “Ungovernable”

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Some liberal observers, noticing President Barack Obama’s lack of success in advancing his signature agenda items, “health care reform” and cap and trade, are theorizing (or concluding) that America has become ungovernable.

Newsweek takes up this matter, blaming “obstructionist Republicans, spineless Democrats and an increasingly incoherent electorate” for America’s supposed ungovernability. [1]

The fact that “health care reform” is not yet a done deal is supposed to illustrate the problem. All liberals agree that Obamacare is sorely needed and would greatly relieve a lot of suffering. Yet the Republicans won’t get on board with it, and a majority of Americans, having been informed about it (since the Democrat’s initial dead-of-night, unread-bill effort to pass it didn’t quite work) selfishly don’t want to lose their current coverage, with which they are moderately satisfied, and pay substantially more in taxes.

New Ad Coming Out of the White House Featuring President Obama:

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

My fellow Americans, we heard your voice in the Massachusetts election and we are listening. We are working on  bold new initiatives here in Washington to address your concerns.

First; we are planning to pass health care in its current form. We will push through this reform utilizing the reconcilation process so as to avoid needless procedural delays that would now be possible. We have heard your voice and we are listening.

Second; we are bringing back to the floor the Cap and Trade legislation that has been stalled since last year. We understand the nations frustration at our lack of progress on this important legislation and we are committed to passing this legislation before summer.

Third; we understand America's anger towards corporate excesses and we plan to address those expeditiously. I have introduced legislation that will penalize banks for their excesses and limit CEO salaries. Middle America does not earn six figure salaries and it is unfair for bank executives to earn them when they are the ones who created this financial mess. We have heard your voices and we are listening.

Fourth; we understand America's frustration with the stalemate in the Senate. Important legislation is likely to be held hostage by the threat of filibuster. This is unacceptable. I have urged the Senate to go forward with changes that will enable our agenda to be passed with a simple majority. This effort will ensure bipartisan cooperation in the future.

America I have heard your voice and I am listening. I will work tirelessly to see that our agenda is moved through Congress and the change that America has longed for becomes a reality. Republicans created the financial crisis that we now face and I will no longer allow them to block our road to recovery. Republicans have destroyed the environment, fostered an atmosphere where corporate greed and racism are rampant. No more. We have heard your voice America and we were listening; now we will act.

(The above is satire; it never happened. No liberals were harmed in the making of this satire and the truth was only slightly stretched.)

Merry Christmas from Grinch and Company

As I write this, there remains the slenderest possibility that the “health care reform” bill may not pass the Senate. I keep reading that Democratic Party leaders are looking toward a Christmas Eve vote on the measure. The health care bill has less than 40 percent support among the American public (see video in my previous post). President Obama himself has a 41 percent “strong disapproval” rating among likely voters according to Rasmussen (12/20/2009).

But if Sen. Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the President have their way, we’re going to get it come hell or high water. Merry Christmas. Enjoy your “gift.”

Obama’s and Democrats’ Debt and Deficit Trade-Off

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

The ol’ U.S. National Debt clock keeps ticking. It’s now up to $12,139,146,898,976.64 or an estimated $39,479.46 per person as of 12/16/2009, 5:57 PM CST. [1]

The Treasury Department says the debt was $12.079 trillion as of Tuesday 12/15/2009 and should reach its current limit of $12.1 trillion by month-end. The House voted 218 to 214 to raise the debt limit to $12.394 trillion, which should finance the government for about two months. [2]

Reuters quoted Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) as saying, “When will it stop? When will Washington get the message that we can't borrow and spend and bail our way back to a growing America.” [3]

On to Copenhagen, or Much Ado about Nothing

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Looking for control
The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, is scheduled for December 7-18 and is supposed to bring together 85 world leaders to discuss the issue. “The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged world leaders to "seal a deal" on climate change when they meet in Copenhagen next month.” He seems optimistic that a deal can be reached. However, there are growing doubts concerning the scientific validity of global warming claims, and whether the conference will result in a significant agreement. [1]

I’ve been writing quite a lot about the costs and loss of liberty associated with Obamacare, but its (also) evil twin, cap and trade (along with the potential EPA regulations) threatens to seriously undercut the U.S. economy and make these double-digit unemployment rates seem permanent. If that’s not bad enough, the Copenhagen conference and events to follow could very well result in a further surrender of U.S. sovereignty, with serious foreign entanglements through bad treaties, etc.

Obama’s “Gang of 39” has gone Too Far!
Obama Regime “Blackmails” Congress
A Commentary by J. D. Longstreet

*************************************

Remember a few weeks ago, I wrote of Obama’s Chicago style politics? Well then, you were not blind-sided by the EPA’s move to declare their regulation of so-called greenhouse gases.

When you peel away the BS spewed by the EPA you will clearly see the ploy being used by the Obama Regime to say to the Congress, either YOU pass the Cap and Trade bill, or MY EPA will pass regulations that will regulate practically every aspect of American life from the home, to factory, to the office, to the church, to the automobile, -- you name it -- and the Obama Regime will be riding herd over every living American exhaling CO-2 today!

Cap and Trade Idea May Be Falling Apart and That Is Good News for Job Creation

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

The effort to stop global warming came full force to the United States with the election of Barack Obama. Both as a presidential candidate, and later as the new President, Obama has led the charge to pass a bill commonly referred to as Cap and Trade. Simply put, the bill would significantly increase taxes on all forms of energy produced using fossil fuels. In addition, companies would be given strict emissions limits, known as a "cap". And they would be able to sell a portion of those limits on an exchange - known as a "trade". The policy would place significant taxes on individuals and industry and is widely recognized as a job killer. But over the past week, it was revealed that much of the data being used in the scientific community to back up the claims of global warming was actually fabricated. And that could be enough to permanently stop Cap and Trade.

This week, the headlines in Europe have been filled with articles on what is now being referred to as "ClimateGate"; the publication of hacked e-mail messages between some climate scientists.

The mail messages in question resided on computer servers at the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at University of East Anglia in England. CRU is widely regarded as the premier repository of climate science data. And that data has been used by the UN and governments around the world to show that the temperature of the Earth is rising.
