Dell has finally come clean on the latest edition to its
Latitude range - the Z - following months of leaked pictures and speculative specifications. This is the first time Dell has included
wireless recharging in its laptops. It is indeed a great-looking machine, black with silver highlights. The
Latitude Z has a 16-inch screen, weighs 4.5 pounds (2 kilograms) and measures one inch at its thinnest point. It runs on Intel's Core 2 Duo low-voltage dual-core chips at speeds of 1.4GHz to 1.6GHz. Also standard are 2GB RAM (expandable to 4GB) and an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD. The wireless charging is made possibly via an inductive pad which is built into a laptop stand, according to Dell recharging times are said to complete in “about the same amount of time” as a standard charger.

"There's a coil in the bottom of the notebook and then there's a matching coil in the stand. You set them next to each other and it generates a current that flows and charges the battery," Belt said.
Dell offers four-cell battery will keep going for around four hours, Dell said, while a bulkier eight-cell battery is also available. Latitude Z is equipped with optional integrated 3G, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth through 3G or WiMax networks. The machine ships running Windows Vista, but a Linux-based quick boot feature called Latitude On also allows for almost instant access to email and the web. All this is very cool & the stylish look, the instant-on OS, the great display, the two SSDs, the wireless dock and inductive charger. The laptop starts at US$1,999 and is available in the U.S., Canada and certain countries in Europe and Asia, Dell said.
