HP Releases Mini 311 Smart Netbook with Nvidia Ion

HP Compaq introduced the world’s thinnest full-performance Mini 311 netbook as well as a slim, stylish consumer netbook that delivers an optimal balance of mobility, performance and affordability. HP Compaq Mini 311C is configured with an Intel Atom processor N270 at 1.6GHz, 1GB of 667MHz DDR2 memory and SATA hard disk 160GB 5400rpm. The graphic industry, Nvidia ION LE chip to keep things running smoothly, with (up to 319MB shared memory) and a webcam with microphone. Nvidia's Ion chipset is a graphics processing unit (GPU) that works together with the low-power Intel Atom processor to generate standard-laptop-like graphics performance.

"By processing data-intensive applications in parallel with the CPU, ION-based Netbooks offer many of the same capabilities of full-sized notebooks including support for all versions of Microsoft Windows," Nvidia said in a statement.

Analysts believe that getting mainstream-laptop level of performance in a Netbook is important. "Our research shows that most people who buy a netbook expect it to behave like a full-sized notebook," according to a statement that Nvidia provided from Tim Bajarin, principal analyst at Creative Strategies. "With Ion-based Netbooks like this one from HP, consumers can expect a well-rounded experience and the ability to handle nearly all of their everyday computing needs," he said.

The I/O ports lining the box are also in line with what we expect from most netbooks: 3 USB ports, a 10/100 ethernet jack, VGA out, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A headphone out/microphone combo jack (compatible with 4-conductor headsets you use in some cell phones), HDMI-out (obviously taking advantage of the GPU), and a 5-in-1 flash card reader that can handle SD/MMC, Memory Stick/Pro and xD picture cards (most netbooks handle only SD/MMC cards.

The HP Mini 311 will be available in two colors: Black Swirl (Black) and White Swirl (white), with an original finish made of concentric circles and round lines. The price for HP 311C and HP Compaq Mini 311 Mini should be less than 350 euros. The netbooks are likely to be launched with Windows 7 on October 22 but may be XP powered if launched earlier.

Thank you for the review of this outstanding netbook. (I am biased, I love computers, specially beautiful compact/stylish netbooks like this HP Mini 311 Smart--I cannot see how we can go into the future without them.)
