Windows 7 Starter Does Not Have Windows Media Center
In a recent article posted on Windows 7 Team Blog there are described the characteristics of Windows 7 Starter edition. The good news is that Windows 7 Starter users will not be constricted to run only three applications simultaneously: you will be able to deploy as many programs as needed, in the same time, without limitations. Windows 7 Starter will be made available worldwide on small notebook PCs, but this Windows 7 edition should not be considered as a reference operating system for netbooks, because all Windows 7 editions have been optimized to be compatible with a broad range of hardware, including notebook PCs.
Regarding the efficiency of Windows 7 Starter edition in case of netbook users, Brandon LeBlanc stated: “We believe these changes will make Windows 7 Starter an even more attractive option for customers who want a small notebook PC for very basic tasks, like browsing the web, checking email and personal productivity”.
As compared with higher Windows 7 editions, like Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Starter edition contains fewer features. The next list shows the features that are not included into Windows 7 Starter edition:
-Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
-Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
-The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
-Multi-monitor support.
-DVD playback.
-Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
-Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
-Domain support for business customers.
-XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.
According to the initial Microsoft official announcement regarding the Windows 7 product SKU, a special edition dedicated to netbooks will not be available. But, you can optimally install and use any of the Windows 7 editions available on your netbook, in order to select the one that suits your needs, because the manufacturers could choose the shipping of their products with two or more Windows 7 editions, different from Windows 7 Starter.
