My Take on the Riots

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Though it is possible, I don't see the present riots in Iran leading to better relations with the West. In fact, I don't believe the riots have anything to do with setting up better diplomatic relations with the rest of the world.

There are probably people acting within the riots who are doing so for their own personal gain. There are those who are less radical than the present regime, but still radical. Then there are the ever constant rabble-rousers who are rioting just to have something to do. The group that wishes to make Iran a better place to live for all is probably minute.

The West has learned the hard way in recent history that every group they support in a coup ends up being a failure or a bigger villain than the one replaced. For America this is exemplified in Panama, Greece, Iran, and South Vietnam. We don't have a good track record of supporting the right people or groups. The present situation of support for a failed "leader" is in the West Bank. The West has chosen to support a blatant failure in Mahmoud Abbas who isn't quite the villain that Khaled Mashaal of Hamas is. It seems that in Foreign Policy, relativity rules.

Honduras President | Manuel Zelaya

Honduras Coup

Recently deposed Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, arrived on a military jet at Juan Santamaria airport outside of San Jose around 8:10 am, Sunday morning.

He was still wearing his pajamas.

President Oscar Arias of Costa Rica greeted his Honduran counterpart at the airport and called on the international community to continue recognizing Zelaya as Honduras' president and to condemn the military coup, Central America's first in more than 15 years.

"I regret there are civilians, political leaders and part of the population in Honduras who applaud a coup d'état, just because they disagree with the government in office," Arias said.

After a brief press conference at the airport, Mr. Zelaya was moved to the DoubleTree Cariari hotel where he stayed for most of the day until a jet provided by Venezuelan president, Hugo Chaves, arrived to transport him to Managua. The Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) met in Managua to give their support to Zelaya.

Can't These Children Learn To Play Nice Together?

In yet one more example of politicians doing what is in the best interest of their own constituency, themselves, the New York State Senate is out of session while still in session.

Two Democrat senators have switched their votes to the Republican side, giving the majority to the Republicans. The minority leader Dean Skelos took control as the majority leader pushing Malcolm Smith to the minority role. There are two weeks left in the session before the summer recess (these summer recesses are a whole other issue),and many issues left on the legislative docket.

In a classic case of taking your ball and going home when things are not going your way, regardless of the impact such a move will have on your teammates, opponents, the league and the fans, the Democrats have locked the gates to the Senate chamber, and Malcolm Smith will not call the Democrat's back until order is restored. By order being restored, one can only assume this means him getting his majority role back.

State Senator Malcolm Smith
