Cyberwar is undefined, yet a form of cyber watch has positioned itself in the gap between conventional armed domains and what the author calls a parallel universe out of scifi. The book is based on politically motivated Russian conflicts monitored by Project Gray Goose and extends to China, Middle East and US. Excerpts by others cover analysis methodologies, information weapons, and attack prediction and responses. It is more about cases and policies than tools. Cyber espionage is shown by Titan rain, and cyber crime by conficker worm, Heartland Payment systems and botnets. Links between crime, intelligence and government are investigated such as RBN. The different cultural approaches of recruiting hackers on open forums are detailed.

Your cellphone buzzes, the ringtone an unrecognized bass-like da-da-da, da-da-da, dadada da-da-da. It reports a new text message which upon selection flashes “Cyberpunk part 1 of 2” and begins a rapid slideshow of images: movie posters for King’s Christine, Clockwork orange, Foundation’s Seldon Crisis, WarGames, Robocop, Virtuosity and Terminator; tattered remnants of Neuromancer and Matrix; a snapshot of the founding of Pravda, Enron stock symbol, upside-down Unabomber manifesto, an X-d out Singularity meetup announcement, and frames of flesh-and-blood pyro. Three part book TOC shown for defense, infiltration, attack. Popup menu titled Conspiracy offers: digital corporatism, game engine, globalism funding, spooks, prisons for profit. Logo for The Gate, single source that replaces mystical beliefs, link thedaemon.com. A disembodied British female asks “Do you believe in the Daemon? Answer yes or no,” and beeps.

"When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." – Nietzsche.
After a web search for detective novels, Amazon automatically recommended this double-sized title and the American edition of “Defend the Realm” became a Black Friday transaction.
Intelligence is claiming its place in history. In 1909, German espionage was rampant. Britannia intended to stab Subversion in the back before it could do the same to the fighting man. As of the centenary, the Service has gone from counter-espionage to counter-terrorism, having seen through the eyes of Gestapo, Moscow Centre, and Al Qaida. Written in upbeat manner for recruiting, the book accounts the new closer cooperation between MI5 and police. Several dramas are distilled from the files, the National Archives having 1% of the 400,000 multi-volume papers. The Double-Cross system allowed the Service to run German espionage’s distractions prior to D-Day. MI5’s notorious nemesis, the Cambridge Five, remained behind after a seeming all-clear when the pair of controllers were recalled by 1939. The US atomic bomb was a surprise to everyone. Many examples of disinformation are provided by all sides. New data includes the publication of 82 photographic plates. |

On the morning of August 22, 2005 Stacey Castor went to work at Liverpool Heating and Air Conditioning. She was the office manager for her husband, David Castor Sr, who owned the business. She made several attempts to call his cell phone but he refused to answer. When he still had not arrived at his business by 2 p.m. she decided to call the police and ask them to meet him at her residence because she was concerned about her husband's welfare. She claimed that her husband had locked himself in their bedroom. She also stated that he had been acting strangely for the last month and he kept a gun in the room.
When deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff's department arrived at 4127 Wetzel Road, Stacey was waiting in the front yard for them. Sgt Robert Willoughby entered the residence and made his way to the bedroom door. Sgt Willoughby knocked on the door but after receiving no response he kicked the door in. David Castor was sprawled naked across the bed. On the floor next to the bed was a container of Prestone antifreeze. On the nightstand there was cranberry juice, apricot brandy, and a half full glass of a bright green liquid.

Fred Tokars. Have you ever heard of him? If you live in the Atlanta area, there's a big chance that you have. Tokars used to be a lawyer who was involved in criminal activities such as money laundering and racketeering but what makes him interesting to me is the fact that when his wife discovered his criminal life, he paid for a hitman to kill her in front of his own two sons. That kind of mind is very interesting to me because the act is so cold-blooded that it just defies my understanding.
The crime.
Sara Tokars was arriving home from Florida with her two sons in the backseat of the car. When she got there, she found a stranger waiting. He forced her into the back of the car and drove off with all three. Then he stopped the vehicle, shot Sara in the head and ran away leaving the two little boys covered in blood. They were able to walk to a nearby house and get help.

Mary Cecilia Rogers: The beautiful "Seegar" Girl. Described as "ethereal and hypnotically pleasing", Mary Cecilia Rogers would come to be known in New York as the "Beautiful Seegar Girl." But it would be her brutal and unsolved murder that would catapult her into history and the literary world when she was immortalized by Edgar Allen Poe in his book, "The Mystery of Marie Roget." |
