When our founding fathers framed the government our nation would be ruled by they knew that man’s nature was one susceptible to the temptations of wordly riches. They knew that corruption was possible and that elected officials would have to be especially careful of the pitfalls that come with power and influence. They all agreed that, even though they had forbid the government from creating any law regarding religion, religion in a persons life would be a desirable quality that would guide him and influence his actions to the betterment of the nation and be a steering current away from the whirlpool of moral degradation. Being the ethical, spiritual men the founding brothers were, they trusted that the citizens who would enjoy the liberties they would inherit would naturally require and choose men of stature and moral ways to lead the nation and would surely not elect anyone who displayed a bent towards weakness of conscience. Oh, have mercy on those Godly, trusting sons of liberty. If only they had known, if only they could have been a bit more prognastic and a lot more cynical.

 

Since who knows when, the government and the officials elected to serve therein, have adopted a principal by which they determine the merit of pending legislation, qualifications of appointees, priority of budget items, and even the requirement of their attendance at regular sessions of business.
