Being Jewish and "Normal"

Humanities & CultureSpirituality and Faith

In "What's Jewish Food?," I wasn't really complaining so much about bagels and lox as I was about "Ashkenazi-centrism" (seriously didn't make this word up). Food was just the lens through which I chose to discuss a particularly aspect of Jewish diversity.

Someone even told me to stop complaining and start writing a new Jewish cookbook. This particular someone doesn't know how often I cook and that this suggestion made my family laugh uproariously. Besides, someone's already covered that territory. Check out: "The Book of Jewish Food: An Odyssey from Samarkand to New York" and"Jewish Cooking in America".

"New Recipes for Jewish Diversity Education" goes into greater detail on this topic. There is even a great section on "Teaching Jewish Diversity" which notes that "a key aspect of diversity education is exploding the idea of the 'normal' and replacing it with the realization – often a relieving one, especially to young people – that there is no 'normal,' but rather a wide range of distinctive experiences."

Forget young people. You don't want to know how much I've paying in therapy pills just to discuss the idea that there is no 'normal.'

Know that Spirit transcends all cultural differences and embraces all creation.

Humanities & CultureQuotes and Insights

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
- Mother Teresa

Let today be a day of acceptance, compassion, and understanding. Let us feel our bond of humanity with each of our planet's six billion souls. Put aside color, geography, wealth, education, political and religious beliefs, and feel the throb of each human heart in your heart. Never let your compassionate connection with all creation be limited by your politics, your language, or your traditions. Know that Spirit transcends all cultural differences and embraces all creation.

Affirmation: I choose acceptance and compassion toward all humanity.

Live and let live

Humanities & CultureQuotes and Insights

The phrase "live and let live" is so familiar that it fails to carry the profound impact it deserves. Much of the true wisdom of life is captured in this simple saying. It addresses the rights of others to their own beliefs and actions, as well as a warning about meddling in the affairs of others.

Let today be a day to honor and respect the beliefs and lifestyles of your extended family, your friends, your neighbors, your fellow citizens, and all those around the world.

Perspectives on the Nature of God - Which of these Five Views Matches Yours?

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Each of us holds a different image of God. There are as many perspectives on the nature of God as there are people, but these views tend to cluster into several groupings which are instructive to examine. However much any of us may choose to argue, or to fight and kill, for our point of view, the nature of God is an unanswerable question. Perhaps there is a specific answer, that we will never learn - in this lifetime. Perhaps the nature of God is so complex and multifaceted that each view of God describes an aspect of the complex whole. Or perhaps the nature of God is actually defined by our beliefs.

Which of these five views matches yours?

1. God the Wrathful: This is a God in whom the human characteristics vengeance, anger, and pride are magnified to superhuman proportions. God the Wrathful is a thinking feeling being who is almost always depicted as male. God the Wrathful holds humans in contempt. This relationship of God and human is demonstrated in the passages, "All men are sinners," "He will suffer vengeance seven times over," and "I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."

The BloggersBase-osphere

We all walk different paths on the Internet—
some only search, some find, some blog, some buy, some sell, some complain...

BloggersBase is becoming much more than a venue through which to increase traffic to my blog; it's becoming a pool of learning resources—methods, designs, points-of-view—perspectives that spark my creativity and urge me in new directions.

I'm not very keen on competition but I feel the competitive spirit can be turned towards positive ends. Striving to be the "best" isn't about trying to make all others the "worst". It's about reaching inside and mapping part of yourself onto the world in a way that honors you and the world...

If I'm about anything, it's about striving to discover and apply principles that can increase understanding and, above all, Unity.

Your Own Streak Of Creativity

In your website, please please please do not be bland, and do not act like everybody else. It is not that I hate that, but I would rather there be diversity in all the blogs. Sometimes your website just needs that “piece of you” to be so great. Just the small unique detail that is like a texture on a fabric.

Your own piece of you could be almost anything on your blog. It could be your great writing style, pictures, a complex theme, a simplistic theme, a creative essence, a signature, and widget, a chatbox - what ever you want. What ever is needed, just be you.

I know you are told all the time that you should follow how a blogger does this, or how another person does that, and down to the very bone you could be the same website with different skin on the outside. And I know, you think you should be following all the things the millions of other bloggers taught you, not what I am telling you right now, but think about it.

I am assuming you spent at least 5 seconds of your busy blogging life thinking. And maybe you realized that you can do both. You can follow all the special steps you have learned, for they are important too, and I have used many techniques other bloggers have taught me. But you can also be creative, and add that little piece of you, so that you know that what is created from your hands is yours, no matter who you give it to.
