 Plant Trees For Your Grandchildren
Treat the earth well. It was not given to you by your parents,it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children. - Native American traditional
Everything you do, and everything you do not do, is your legacy to future generations.
Ecology is important. Thirty years ago, Tampa Bay was polluted and dying. Today, the fish are swarming. A small island near my home is roost for perhaps 2000 birds, including once-endangered pelicans and frigate birds. The eagle in today's picture visited my dock today. That eagles would return to this part of Florida was unimaginable. Few would have thought that Tampa Bay could have recovered, and that recovery has taken decades, but nature is amazingly resilient when we humans stop attacking her.

I was thinking this morning about the planet we call earth.

I was thinking, here is this wobbly planet. It has plates that float atop an iron core surrounded by a shell of liquid iron. And the plates move occasionally, causing seismic shifts of the planet’s surface. So things move around a little.
Then the earth has this atmosphere that surrounds it. More than three quarters of the atmosphere is made up of nitrogen and most of the rest is oxygen. However it is the remaining 1%, a mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapour and ozone, that not only produces important weather features such as cloud and rain, but also has considerable influence on the overall climate of the Earth.
Every year as it orbits around this fiery ball of hydrogen and helium we call the sun, the earth actually wobbles.

We took a mini break over the weekend. Well, it's hot and it's been a long year so far. My company closed for what seems the Nth time since I came to Israel and I found myself signing on. It's the first time for me as finding another job always came quickly. Not this time. High tech has hunkered down and is very wary of taking on people.
So, the break. It was hard work, on a Kibbutz near Jerusalem. Well, I say Kibbutz but it's one of the many privatized ones which means it's not really a kibbutz at all, nor a moshav, not a, well anything I can give a name to. Village I suppose would be the best fit though hamlet comes to mind. It was a training course for 10 people on the basics of how to build with earth. Yes, we got muddy, mixed straw with wet earth and plastered a wall with it. Made bricks with straw and a rammed earth bench. There was no air conditioning , no TV, radio, Internet or swimming pool. The showers were outside and the toilets were dry.
Lovely.

Not to get all main stream media on you and make this sound too dramatic or anything. By the time this collision actually happens, if humans are still around at all (it'll be way past 2012), we'll probably be floating in the ether communicating by telepathy and talking to a big computer named Multivac. Hope I didn't scare you (much).
That'll be after the war with Skynet and the machines. Anyway, the study was done by Jacques Laskar and his team at the Observatoire de Paris says that there is a 1 in 2,500 chance that the huge collission will happen in about 3.5 billion years, if it happens at all. This is versus the nearly 99% chance that things will continue as normal for another 5 billion (with a B) years and then the sun will expand to engulf the solar system before it implodes and goes BOOM. Then Multivac will say "Let there be light..." |

On the third place is the environment. Yes, I realize that on "Earth Day" environment was supposed to come first. But let's admit it. It doesn't, and placing it there for a single day or month wouldn't change global priorities. Caring for the environment today is a luxury. If we want the environment to enter people's priority, we must first attend to the people on this earth. |
