The Formula Zero Race has the final laps taking place today as competitors attempt to take "zeroth place" to win this hydrogen fuel cell formula event.
Officially called the Formula Zero European Championship, the event is a play on the Formula One race circuit with teams competing against one another using miniature hydrogen fuel-cell formula cars. Racing as a carbon-free Grand Prix, it's all about ingenuity and sustainability.
The little go-cart formula cars race around a track, emitting nothing but water from their tailpipes. Most are capable of going 0-60mph in about five seconds and their speeds top out at around 75mph. The hydrogen for the event is being provided by a hydrogen maker using wind power to split water and compress the hydrogen.
Some teams are taking their sustainability even further, with the Dutch team (Greenchoice Forze) having a 70% renewable material build into their car's body work and the rest being offset through carbon exchange purchases by their green energy sponsor.
Formula Zero is already taking applications from students and universities interested in getting in on next year's race. The current series features four teams competing against each other in each of their host countries: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain. The Belgian team has already taken two of the three circuits, so it poised to win it all (all zero of it) today in Spain.
