Haiti's Port-au-Prince is shaken to reveal what it was made by

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

It seems that the death toll will be high from this earthquake. But earthquakes don't kill, not unless the ground opens up near people, or part of a mountain slips down on them. Very few people have died this way.

But people die in earthquakes because of the mass of falling buildings. Concrete as a roof, can be deadly.

Anyone in the construction industry in caring nations knows that they are liable (within reason) for the lives (indeed for injury) of the people who occupy any building they are involved with. Capable engineers are even required to have insurance. The process is intended to ensure all is built to the standard it was designed to. Even where I live, we now build to meet earthquake standards, though earthquake is uncommon. In Haiti, earthquakes are known to be common, as are strong winds (a sideways force akin to earthquake).  The foundation of this understanding is quite simple: the principle of 'making good' due to our actions which is the foundation of every justice system.

Anyone should ask when they see the lives lost in a collapsed building, "who's responsible?"

BEST* and Biggest: Israel Wins Humous World Record

EntertainmentHumor

Now here's a good way for Israelis and Arabs to compete and have good, clean tasty fun in the process: The BIGGEST HUMOUS contest. The town of Abu Ghosh just outside of Jerusalem which we passed through daily when driving to visit our sons where they used to live, just won the Guiness Book of World Records contest and beat out Lebanon for the largest serving of humous ever.

(Maybe the path to peace is through the. . . stomach?)

Some Chanukah Photos to Share

The last day of Chanukah was this past Shabbat. I have a lot of trouble transitioning from a chag* to a regular week; I never want to let go of the holiday: it is my connection with ha-Olam ha-Ruchani*, and I keep wanting to hang on. . .so it was just today that I uploaded my Chanukah pictures and am posting some of them here (and will share them on Me-ander, too).

This year, unlike last year, I took plenty of pics, as we had a full chag (Baruch Hashem), including a friend's annual open-house, a Chabad family dinner and a party of our own on the 6th night, complete with home-made latkes, or levivot* in Hebrew (a joint venture) and home-made sufganiyot* (the Head Chef did it all by himself). It all culminated with a shared family-and-friends-Shabbat-dinner on the last night of Chanukah, at our home. Here are some of the highlights:

Give And You Shall Receive

LifestyleHealth, Sports & Fitness

You've probably heard the saying "It's better to give than to receive" and with it being the holiday season you've being doing a lot of both (or I hope you have!).

What's this got to do with losing weight and escaping from fat, I hear you say!

I'll get to that in a minute, but going back to the old wise saying above the majority of us would rather receive than give (be honest now). When in fact it's looking at it the complete wrong way round...the more you give away you'll find the more you'll get back.

For example...

  • Give away time to your child, and you always feel better and both of you have a great time.
  • Give money to a poor person thats down on their luck and both of you walk away from it feeling better for it.

But thats all fine and dandy but whats that got to do with weight loss?

And thats what I'm going to ask you now "What are you going to give away this year to become a slimmer healthier person?"

Here's my 5 suggestions...

1 - Give More Attention To Yourself - How well have you taken care of yourself this year 2009? Have you been putting everyone and everything first compared to you and your health? The thing to remember is if you give more to yourself and take better care of you, you're going to have a lot more to give back to others. Remember to treat yourself better this year even if its a small token or gift you buy yourself to say job well done...just stay away from food as a treat.

2 - Give Better Food To Yourself

I was reminded by Soccer Dad (although he doesn't know it) that I forgot to link to the last two Jewish Blog Carnivals, Haveil Havalim, so here they are, HH #248 at Frume Sarah's, and #249 at I'll Call Baila.
And here is the link to the KCC #49 (that's Kosher Cooking Carnival for you clueless ones) hosted this month at Kosher.com.

An Easy Way To Burn More Calories Over Christmas

LifestyleHealth, Sports & Fitness

After reading the title of todays post you’re probably thinking I’m
going to give a long list of strenuous exercises you should do to burn calories, but no!

Todays tip is simply reduce the amount of time you sit watching TV over the Christmas holidays.

Believe it of not the amount of time you spend in front of the tube can make a difference to how many calories you burn.

In a recent survey 36 participants were asked to cut there TV viewing time to see how it affected their lifestyle habits. And surprisingly the average participant burned 120 more calories a day when they spent 50% less time in front of the TV than they had before starting the study.

Why?

While the people involved didn’t reduce their calorie intake as well as watching less TV, they took up different activities around the home to fill in that extra time. Some people found that they now had extra time for some housework and cleaning or having time to do some light exercising.

But I also feel that there were other things at work here…

1 – Reducing TV time can also reduce needless snacking – Sometimes TV isn’t the same without without our favorite food balanced close by. Which isn’t so bad if we have a small portion but if sometimes we get so wrapped up in the latest thriller and suddenly a whole tub of “Ben & Jerry’s” disappears without a trace, then we’re in trouble.

2 –
