I found this awesome set of pictures on this site. I was so impressed and mesmerized that I knew I had to share these. Hope all the readers like these images just as much as I do.

In Muslim nations and regions around the globe, this is the first week of the holy month of Ramadan, a time for followers to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual activity during the day, breaking their fast each sunset, with traditional meals and sweets. During this time, Muslims are also encouraged to read the entire Quran, to give freely to those in need, and strengthen their ties to God through prayer. The goal of the fast is to teach humility, patience and sacrifice, and to ask forgiveness, practice self-restraint, and pray for guidance in the future. This year, Ramadan will continue until Saturday, September 19th.

Nurture your mental health

Nurture your mental health.

This is a big subject I'm going to get into now and I'm a little overwhelmed by it, first of all because it is a very personal thing for me ( I have suffered from anxiety for years) and also because there is so much to cover.. but I will do my best as always :-)

First of all we need to determine whether our mental health needs to be nurtured. Ask yourself these questions:

Have you been having trouble sleeping lately? Have you been feeling down and helpless? Are you having trouble concentrating on even small tasks? Are you over eating or drinking to make yourself feel better? Do you have many self-destructive thoughts, do you put yourself down as often as you can? Have you been having thoughts of suicide? If you can answer yes to some of these questions, you might need to have a look at your mental health and try to improve it.

Why would you want to do that? Well, because people who are mentally healthy are able to handle a lot of life's challenges, they are able to build very strong relationships and have productive lives and surely this must be a goal for all of us. Even if you are genetically pre-disposed to mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety, there are ways you can improve your mental health.

Let's talk a little about resilience

Which food choices are free choices to munch on or use to season my dishes?

Mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions can be used freely throughout the day. You can also add cucumbers, garlic, asparagus, and that pesky nopalescactus to that list! When it comes to the other choices nothing puts weight on your butt faster than an avocado. It's true! Carrots, grapes and dates are all too high in sugar for munching. Organic coconut! Forget it. Just because something is labeled organic does not make it an acceptable weight loss choice. Moreover, corn, well, just think of corn in one of its primary functions. Weight gain feed for cattle!

Ensalada de Nopal

Ingredients:
cactus
onions
garlic
lemon
cilantro
salt
tomato

Buy a bag of cleaned and diced catus leaf. In a large pot combine the catus, salt onions and garlicc. Bring to a boil and allow to simmer until al diente. Drain and toss with other ingrediants when cold.

Review: Oishinbo: Fish, Sushi, and Sashimi

Oishinbo A la Carte: Fish, Sushi, & Sashimi

This volume of the popular foodie manga features less of the edible nationalistic fervor that was found in the sake volume, and more of another aspect found in so much Japanese fiction: the father/son conflict. Yes, that's a prevalent theme, and aside from the main subject of the manga (food, natch), the series almost seems built around it, regularly pitting protagonist Shiro Yamaoka against his jerk of a father, Kaibara Yuzan. It can be pretty amusing to see the two of them face off over culinary knowledge and matters of gourmet honor, and luckily, this volume is full of that sort of thing. Ah, resentment-fueled family conflict; is there anything more amusing?

Strawberry Ice Cream with Strawberries

Image via Wikipedia

God I hate dieting. I have never been able to diet for more than two days at a time, then I crash and burn like a blind motorcycle driver. I have a very sweet tooth. No wait, actually I think most of my teeth are sweet! I am an absolute slave to sugar and before you start commenting that this is a bad thing and I should stop immediately, rest assured I do know. I know all the facts. I am not an idiot, just an addict.

I like to live from the philosophy that if nobody sees you eating, what you eat has no calories. Since I am on my own for three quarters of the time, I eat only food with no calories at all. I have another theory: if you do happen to have a guest , be sure to see exactly the same amount of candy because then the calories equal each other out and you're back to zero. Right?

It is widely known that if we feel badly, we as human beings like to stuff our faces with everything that's bad for us. Now, who in the bleep decided that everything that tastes good  is bad for you?? I have decided that whenever I eat for emotional purposes, like for example to cover a deep dark feeling of nothingness and depression, I am allowed to eat ice cream and candy in disgusting measures and those calories do not count either. Call it medication. Medicine does not make you fat.

If you reach over and eat from somebody else's plate, that does not count as calories either. It's a crime to throw away food!

The mysterious man

Here is the first part of a story I have written, it's called "The mysterious man". The story is about a girl and her attempts to discover a man's identity. Hope you enjoy!

It was Christmas Eve, there was a lot of food and drinks, spread over a long table, tempting with the multicolored presentation and flagrant smell; on another table there was a mountain of cookies and cakes as well as a chocolate fountain which was surrounded by marshmallows on the sides, and music was heard on the balcony mixed with peoples voices, and from time to time, coming from the street, with a hum of voices and carols getting louder and then softly disappearing, as groups of family and friends werepassing in the front of the house.

Inside the house there was a big commotion, servants running everywhere, like little bees next to a beehive, catering to the needs of the guests. The latter were laughing and dancing, some out on the balcony with their sweethearts, others, gathered in groups, were telling stories of other Christmas holidays and funny happenings from theprevious year’s party; meanwhile, some old people had gathered together and started discussing their grandchildren’s hope for the future and how good things had beenwhen they were young, reminiscing their youth.
