For those of us that have made exercise a significant part of our lifestyles, there is a small percentage that takes it too far. Exercise addiction is rare but becoming common enough to begin receiving much needed attention and awareness. Like any other addiction, a fine line separates a healthy dedication to fitness and a potentially life altering obsession. Exercise addiction follows the same patterns as others like alcoholism, or addiction to drugs, cigarettes or sex. Excessive workouts may illicit a profound payoff, temporarily masking physical, mental or emotional pain or upset. Someone suffering from an exercise addiction may experience a false sense of control or power over their life which wears off quickly, requiring another shot of exercise induced endorphins. Much like an alcoholic may use liquor or a stressed out smoker may puff a pack or two a day, the exercise addict uses fitness as a ‘healthy’ coping mechanism. For those of us that enjoy a healthy, balanced relationship with fitness, our workout payoffs range from things like weight maintenance or loss, stress relief, improved body composition, cardiovascular health improvements, disease prevention, muscular hypertrophy and many others. For those addicted it goes far beyond all of that. |

The other night on BBC 1 I happened to catch, the back end of a programme which was about food and the content in it. I only managed to see the last five minutes of it, but luckily due to the fact that now we have BBC iplayer, I was able to watch it in its entirety.
I must say some of the things that were discussed, were quite eye opening to say the least. So this is what this particular post is about and it is based on what was talked about in the programme. How We Buy Food One of the first things that was mentioned in this programme, was how we are conditioned to buy food. Manufacturers know that they have to push our emotional triggers so we buy their particular product, so one of the researchers was walking round a supermarket. With a pair of glasses which was linked to a camera which had a cross hair on it, so you can actually see what the person is looking at. This is then linked to a laptop computer, so the information can be used to see how exactly we as people tend to shop. One of the people involved with the gadget said that we tend to live in a one second world. So if a manufacturer of a particular food product wants to grab our attention, then they haven’t got very long at all in order to do that, especially in today’s ultra-competitive world of food products. The packaging is the most important thing as regards, what influences us to buy a particular food |

There are a lot of things that make the summer different. Warmer weather, higher temperatures, and of course, empty schools. And empty schools mean one thing: copious amounts of children at their homes, causing chaos and confusion in their mother’s lives.
Normally I try semi-hard to feed my children semi-healthy foods. There’s always a fruit or veggie around, but don’t hate me because we eat white bread and rice.
During the school year there is routine. Wake up, eat cereal. Pack lunches, eat balanced meal. Nothing else to do in the winter but cook a flavorful and nutritious meal for dinner. There are homemade cookies and breads and popcorn popped on the stove all the time.
But in the summer, there is fun to be had, lawns to be mowed, and creeks to be played in. And for me, all of this trumps the food pyramid, unless the food pyramid is something we build out on the back deck or jump off of at the park. We are constantly on the go and out the door and that means less planning for mealtimes and well-organized trips to the grocery store.

AHHHH!!! We are all trying new things that can help us eat well during the day but yet still maintain a healthy diet to the best of our abilities. My new found addiction is simple. You can get them in a lunch form at your local chinmese restaraunt and it is so YUMMY!! My simple daily lunch is steamed chicken and brocolli S teamed broccoli is the best cure for over-indulgence I know. It's cleansing, healthful, high in vitamin C, protein- 45% of the brocollis calories are from protein, and fiber. If you do it at home yourself you can steam it box it and dress it when your rerady to eat it. The easiest way to dress broccoli is to mix in a tablespoon of butter. But considering that butter is pure fat, my favorite way to eat broccoli is with a little lemon juice and some nutty flax seed oil (available at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and health food stores) which is high in healthful omega-3 oils and quite delicious in taste. You can also do olive oil and lemon zest (pictured above), olive oil and balsamic vinegar, etc. etc. Good with toasted slivered almonds or toasted sesame seeds too |

Not only is it healthier for your precious bundle, making your own baby food can save you a bundle too! All you need are a couple of ice cube trays, a blender or food processor, and a little bit of time once a month or so. Pureed fruits and veggies can be frozen in ice cube trays then popped out and stored in a freezer bag for up to 3 months but are best when used within a month. The nice thing about the food cubes is that they are the perfect size so there is a lot less waste. One cube equals about 1 ounce. Heating in the microwave takes around 30 seconds so even if your baby decides he is still hungry, he won't have to wait long for you to pop in another cube. There are a lot of free resources on the web for homemade baby food. One of my favorites is wholesomebabyfood.com. |
