The Pitfalls of Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing, Cloud Services, Web Services, Web 2.0. Each has its own definition, overlapping with the others to a greater or lesser extent. What it means to the man on the street (or on his or her laptop or mobile), though, is that we’re increasing trusting our valuable (to us, at least) information to a service somewhere out there on the Internet.

For some, this could mean just a webmail account with Gmail or Hotmail and profiles with Facebook and Flickr. For Web Workers (e.g. bloggers and freelancers) it could mean a whole lot more (accounting records, archives, contacts, work in progress, etc.).

Sometimes we get a none too gentle reminder about the risks of Cloud Computing.

To put things in very simplistic terms, the risks are two:

  • Risk of inaccessibility. (You don’t have access to your data.)
  • Risk of inappropriate accessibility. (The wrong people have access to your data.)

Either of these risks could be the result of human error or a hardware or software failure at the service provider. Data shops are usually pretty good at handling such outages, however. It’s far more likely that problems will result from your Web 2.0 service having a nasty brush with Economy 1.0.

Did FriendFeed get influenced by Facebook as a Major Bug surfaces

image thumb26 Did FriendFeed get influenced by Facebook as a Major Bug surfaces

Alright I should stop yelling at Facebook and the problems it has with security, etc. Why? Because FriendFeed has a vulnerability, call it being influenced by Facebook (I know I am being skeptical about the social network). The bug lets you make FriendFeed posts as any one by sending a message via email. The proof is someone making a post as FriendFeed’s founder, Bret Taylor. FriendFeed has been quick at taking action and shutting down email posting to the service.

Well this is quite bad and I just hope there has not been a major issue with this.

Facebook has befriended FriendFeed

TechnologyInternet

This morning, I was on twitter and saw a lot of news about FriendFeed being acquired by Facebook.  First of all, I would like to congratulate the people at FriendFeed that their work has finally been recognized after being an "unofficial research and development" for Facebook.  Whenever I see FriendFeed progresses, I will see it later at Facebook.  It's only natural that they should be merged since FriendFeed is complimentary to Facebook.

What will happen now?

I am expecting Google to have some reaction over this.  Probably, they will start looking at acquiring Twitter once again.  What will Microsoft and Yahoo do as well?  FriendFeed is a very powerful tool which has helped me to group a lot of my social media communications together.  I really hope that FriendFeed will continue running as I got to know more and more of my social media friends from there as well.

According to the blog post, they are currently figuring out what they can do together.  FriendFeed has grew its own community from ground up, and again I hope they are not looking at dissolving this website.

It's a website-eats-website world!

After working with the various social media for a couple of years, it can be scary to see one website to go out of business in almost 1 day! A lot of websites have been built with the intention of being acquired.  And it can be quite easy to identify when we are wondering why the website can go without any sign of income.  If not, you can see a very well-planned website which can bring in a lot of income, and it is on a shopping spree to look out for potential websites to increase its territorial space.

And according to Robert Scoble, Zuckerberg finally has a real R&D team from FriendFeed. I will be very hopeful of what they are going to do next.

To aggregate your website or not

TechnologyInternet

There are many websites out there, aggregating their contents from everywhere online.  They are doing this so that they can leverage on the power of the social media to do most of their work.  And for myself, I actually aggregate my own tweets into my own blog so that I can share with my blog readers the same things that I am sharing on Twitter.

Good leverage for companies

Companies are busy working on their business.  They don't have much time working on their websites even though they need to do some online marketing to gain steady exposure.  Unless they are willing to invest an agency or hiring employees to work on the websites, the web contents can really be very stale by itself.  When we see it once, it is still pretty fresh.  Having to come back years later, it can be really boring to see the same thing again!

On the other hand, aggregation can help to make your website more steady with fresh information.  But it is even better to monitor the information coming in.  It's better to read through yourself, before releasing them into your own website.  It's fast and easy.  It's fun as well because you will gain knowledge reading other people's websites while sharing them with your website readers.

Good leverage for individuals

It is also a good leverage for individuals like myself who is busy with the outside life.  I have a blog here and I have to maintain it because it is my passion and hobby to work on it.  However, we have to learn from bloggers like Chris Brogan to create 3 posts a day in order to enjoy some holiday.

I aggregate my information between my Google reader, Facebook, Friendfeed, Twitter and my own blog.  The information is flowing around them, and I get to enjoy the same leverage when BloggersBase gives me more exposure through my contents.

Is there any issue with aggregation?

There are some lazy bums out there who aggregate strangers' information.  I get to see some of my information being aggregated in their blogs.  But I am also glad that some of them give me the credit that I deserve.  The rest simply grab the informaiton as it is!

When I see a website full of aggregation, I will usually be put off because this is not really personal.  Instead, I will usually go to their source and subscribe from there.  The 100% aggregated website don't really deserve my time since they don't see the contents themselves.

Well, probably I will share with you how I aggregate my contents in my next post. :)
