I was shocked to hear that the PS3 slim has been release and is out on the market cheaper than ever! Sony slimmed down the PS2 back in 2004 in the hope of breathing new life in to the console which worked. Now Sony have done it again but this time with the PS3 and not just that, they’ve even slimmed down the price!
It’s good to know that the new slim PS3 is almost identical to the 80GB and 160GB ‘fat” version. I own the 80GB version. This slim PS3 comes with an impressive 120GB hard drive, built in Blu-Ray drive and more. One feature that the new PS3 has lost however is the ability to use a different OS (Linux) but apart from that everything else is pretty similar apart from the aesthetics of course. You will still receive the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity unlike the Xbox where the Wi-Fi adapter is an add-on costing around $100, you’ll also still get a handy two USB ports for plugging in external storage devices and another one for charging the Dualshock 3 controller which comes with the console and you’ll also get the same built-in Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player with BD-Live capabilities.
Like the ‘fat’ version this version also supports the playback of MPEG-1 and MPEG-4/h.264 video files from USB or disc-based media, as well as JPEG image viewing. It allows you to view images in a slideshow which is quite impressive.
I was disappointed to hear though that Sony didn’t add any new features to the console and even though the IR receiver was highly requested it still wasn’t added, backwards compatibility was also taken away even though it was available on the older version of the PS3.
You’ll be glad to hear though that the new PS3 is a massive 33% smaller and 36% lighter than it’s predecessor however the new ‘textured’ or matte finish give the console a cheaper look, I liked the glossy, sorry Sony.
Some people, not me though will be glad to know that the touch sensitive buttons to power the system on and of and to eject the CD have been replaced with standard push buttons and the back still has a master power on and of button. I liked the touch sensitive buttons, they are unique. The branding has also had some changes (the PS3 logo and lettering has undergone some redesign).
According to Sony, they had to do a completely new Internal design architecture of the PS3 slim, “from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism.”
It’s good to know that Sony have still been able to build the power supply into the system itself rather than having a massive brick as an external power supply like the one found on the Xbox 360.
So what’s this low price tag i’ve kept talking about? It’s a more affordable $299. Sounds good but I think I’ll stick with fatty for now
