What if Hitler Won the War?”

Guest Post by  James Diehl

Between 1941 and 1945, tens of thousands of American men responded to the grave threat posed on the world by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. For nearly four years, these heroic men put their lives on hold to fight against evil on the battlefields of Europe, Asia and Africa.

They were selfless men who, almost to a man, felt they had a responsibility to defend the “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.” They’ll tell you today that they’re not heroes, but that they were merely doing their jobs.

Those beliefs and values are a big reason why men and women of that era became known as the greatest generation in history, as Tom Brokaw so eloquently stated a few years ago. The men who survived the horrors of World War II often withstood a dozen or more close calls with death – they are heroes, as are the ones who never made it home.

It makes me shiver to think what life would be like today had the Allies not won the war. America would certainly be a very different place in the 21st century, as would the free world.

Think about it for a second. What if the Axis had won the war and imposed their will on the United States, mandating a similar fate to the one the Allies imposed on Germany in the post-World War II era?

Heroes of Death; Heroes of Life

He threw himself onto death.
She threw herself onto life.

Two heroes.
* * *

We were talking about Roi. Roi Klein. What a hero. What a decision. What character.
Then she announced, "Mrs. N called me today about carpool."
I wondered why she was changing the topic from something so venerable to something so mundane.
She related, "I was surprised to hear from her as we aren't very close. She wanted to know if we had our rides arranged to and from school."
I thought of the grandeur of his deed. He had jumped onto a live grenade.
She continued, "Though we technically needed to carpool with someone because we had no morning ride, I was still hesitant about committing."
Barely a nanosecond to think, he had yelled out a warning and then "Shma Yisroel" had burst forth from his soul.
She explained, "I really don't like driving; you know that. And carpool? I really hate it. Everybody knows that."

Unlikely Heroes: World War Two - 70 Years Ago

Guest Post by  Douglas W. Jacobson

American airman, George Watt, was a gunner aboard a B-17 flying a mission from England to the Ruhr valley in Germany on November 5, 1943, when his plane was shot down near the Belgian village of Zele. He parachuted to earth and landed in an open field, drawing the immediate attention of local Nazi authorities. While Watt hid in a ditch the local townspeople distracted the authorities pointing off in the wrong direction. Before long, one of the locals approached him and led him to a rural homestead where he was given civilian clothing and warm food. A few days later Watt was taken to Brussels where he was interviewed to make certain he wasn’t a spy and was soon off to Paris and on to safety in Spain. Watt didn’t know it at the time but he had been aboard the "Comet Line".

They say that every good novel must come from the heart, an inspiration that captivates the soul and drives the author to tell the story. Such was my inspiration in writing NIGHT OF FLAMES: A Novel of World War Two. I have been reading about and studying World war two for most of my adult life. But when I encountered the story you are about to read in this brief article, I was captivated, inspired and compelled to make my fictional characters live this very real story of courage. A story of Unlikely Heroes.

The Fall 2009 TV Lineup – Beej’s Picks

EntertainmentMedia

Apple TV Between jumping from part-time adjuncting to full-time teaching/administration and planning a wedding in approximately 3 months (under 6 weeks to go and counting!) there seems to be very little time to actually sit in front of my boobtube and bask in the awesomeness that the Fall ‘09 lineup promises. Fortunately, I have a DVR and a pretty decent setup to watch stuff online even if it doesn’t record, but that unfortunately time is still an issue.

As it stands, I have the following list of shows on my list to keep up with this season (including premier dates):

    • Community (NBC) Sept. 17
    • Fringe (Fox) Sept. 17
    • Big Bang Theory (CBS) Sept. 21
    • Heroes (NBC) Sept. 21
    • How I Met Your Mother (CBS) Sept. 21
    • FlashForward (ABC) Sept. 24
    • Dollhouse (Fox) Sept. 25
    • Stargate Universe (Syfy) Oct. 2
    • Star Wars: The Clone Wars (CN) Oct. 2
    • South Park (CC) Oct. 7
    • V (ABC) Nov. 3

Time permitting, I’d also like to toss the following into the mix, but they’re not nearly as important (nor as interesting) as the previous set:

    • Glee (Fox) Sept. 9
    • Castle (ABC) Sept. 21
    • Criminal Minds (CBS) Sept. 23
    • Mentalist (CBS) Sept. 24
    • CSI (CBS) Sept. 24
    • Sanctuary (Syfy) Oct. 9

I just don’t know where I will find the time. On top of these, I’m working on catching up on Buffy: The Vampire Slayer with my fiancée (we’re currently on Season 3), plowing through Stargate SG-1 with my dad (we’re on Season 4), and I’m working through Season 2 of Stargate Atlantis by my lonesome (which might be put off soon given the influx of fall programming).

This is Heroes' Day

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

I'm going to stick my neck out and say something that some might consider inappropriate for this day, the anniversary of 9/11/2001.
Today is not Patriot's Day.

We all know the history of 9/11 and what happened on this day in 2001.  We also know why it is called Patriot's Day and why President George W. Bush and Congress thought it appropriate to name this day Patriot's Day.

They were wrong.

Today is not Patriot's Day and what happened on 9/11 was not a patriotic thing.  What happened on that fateful day was the willful slaughter of thousands of innocent Americans who were going to work that day like they would any other day.  Some worked in an office, some wore badges, some carried wrenches, but all were just men and women, regular people, going to work.

What happened on 9/11 was a massive group and individual showing of bravery by the men and women tasked with responding to emergencies such as what happened at the Twin Towers on that sad day in our history.
