The title expression is that of a book by Thomas Wolfe, and is commonly used to mean that a person cannot go back to his childhood home and expect it to be the same, expect himself to relive his (or her) experiences and feelings; that time passes, and our childhood is gone forever .
I had just read an article in the Wall Street Journal about returning to one's childhood home, and I had never even thought to Google - sorry - to search for the apartment building where I grew up by using Google Maps until I read the article. So I did. Parts of the neighborhood are the same, but I didn't recognize the shops, nor the playground where I used to play as a little girl. When I was little, all playground equipment was made of metal: the swings, see-saws, monkey bars--which I loved to climb to the top, scaring my mother half to death--and the slides, which I used to call "sliding ponds." To this day, I don't know why (but then again, I also called pony-tails 'horses' tails, so...!)

I do not have kids. But I do not think I need to have children to know the difference between good parenting and bad parenting. I am sick of seeing some parents treat their kids in ways, which will do more harm than good. This is what I wanted to share with you all. First bad parenting habit- Stop living your dream through your child. That is the number 1 bad parenting habit on my list. I cannot stand it when parents push their kids to do things they could not achieve. How unfair is that? Be it dance, art, music or sports. Encourage your child, but remember one thing. Your child is a unique individual and not YOU! These are the other Bad Parenting Habits I cannot stand

 There are a lot of exciting developments in new tech for the rooftop of your home. In July, I talked about a new solar panel roofing tile that mimics the Spanish tile styling and generates electricity as a photovoltaic panel. Turns out, those tiles from SRS are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to cool new technology you can put on top of your house.
Low-Tech and Cheap - The cheapest, low-tech way is to paint the roof a lighter or darker color, depending on your area on the planet. Most rooftops are dark in color and this absorbs heat. In hot areas, that is obviously not the way to go as you want to reflect and dissipate heat. Many homes in states like Georgia, Arizona, etc. can save up to 40% of their A/C bills just by painting the rooftop white. A simple, illustrated cartoon at WorldChanging.com explains the idea fairly well, though it is focused mainly on hot parts of the planet. Like Florida and LA. It doesn't talk about places that are heated from below the rooftop by hot air, like Washington D.C. nor does it mention cooler climates like where I live. |

 So I kept this one a little bit quiet, mainly because it was still touch and go right up to first thing this morning if it was going to go ahead or not. But I flew back to Dublin last night for the very last time. This morning I attended court, and after 5 minutes in court, I was divorced. That's it. All over and done with. And me and Batman even shared a joke in court over how useless his solicitor was and then left court and shuck hands. I know, shocking. We parted on good terms. After all those years of battling it out, far too many court appearances and god only knows how much in legal fees, in the end it was the pair of us that sorted it all out with the help of small child. Naturally his solicitor tried to draw things out longer, actually made a couple of mistakes that I was only to happy to point out (one in the eye there I felt) and actually looked quite sad to be losing her best customer. Everything over our agreement about small child is now set down in a court order so there will be no wriggling out of it for Batman. So now, I hope and pray that I never see the inside of a court room again in my life. |
