Times have been tough. People have lost their jobs, their homes and in some cases their sanity. Many have struggled like they have never struggled before, but some have prospered even in a horrible recession. Can we thank the Internet for that?

Just think about it for a moment...

If you don't have a job, you probably aren't driving too much because you can't afford the gas. You probably aren't spending your nights at the local bar or movie theater.
Here is MY list of ways I think the Internet has saved many people and their families from what could have been even worse than it was/is.

1. Looking for a job no longer requires visiting temp agencies, picking up the local newspaper or driving around aimlessly in search of "Help Wanted" ads. With job search engines, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn (to name a few) some of us have been able to find new and better opportunities.
2. Startup Internet companies are taking over the corporate world. Everywhere you turn there is a new startup, a new idea, a new plan and a new way to make legit money on the Internet. Have you found your Niche?
3. Hulu means you really don't need to pay for cable if you are OK with watching your favorite shows a day or two after they air. Not all shows are on Hulu, but I am pretty sure you will find at least one of your favorites.

4. Full time Youtuber? That's right! Many have found out HOW to create a buzz around their homemade videos that they post on Youtube and are now making big bucks doing what they love.
5. Twitter support. When the going gets tough..... Well we now take it to Twitter and lean on our Twitter families for support and advice.
6. Gaming sites like Pogo.com are a free escape from reality. Whether you enjoy card games, word games, strategy, action or casino type games; you can find something you will enjoy Online and more than likely FREE.

7. When the money gets tight one of the first things to go would be your long distance plan, but with Skype, OOvOO and other VOIP services you can now chat with all of your loved ones for free.
8. The recession has brought to life my very own profession and that is Social Media. It has been around as long as the Social web has been but lets face it, many companies are now adapting to a cheaper router in marketing and advertising and so Social Media seems to be taking over.
9. Getting paid to blog has become very popular in the past year with adsense, sites such as Izea, Social Spark and even Bloggers Base. Everyone is looking for a few extra dollars to pocket.

This is obviously my own personal list of how I think the Internet saved many people in this economic recession.

This is a great post! It's amazing how many people will stay away from technology. But, once we get over the initial "wow" factor of a new toy, it can turn into an incredible tool! Well done!

Thanks, Kim...this resonates with me because I've been unemployed for almost a year, looking for work using various internet avenues, including wrangling my online presence for exposure/work.
