Lightbulb Doorknob- A Horribly Great Idea

lightbulb doorknob
The reactions around these here Internets today on this concept seems to be mixed. Some are saying worst idea ever, some are saying it's genius. We here at Craziest Gadgets will remain boringly neutral. In theory, it's a good idea- a doorknob that lights up so you can find your way in the dark without having to turn on the light. And the doorknob and lightbulb are similarly shaped.

But then practicality smacks you across the face. A thin hollow glass doorknob? A doorknob with electricity running through it that gets too hot to touch? And how is this going to be powered exactly anyway? Maybe this isn't such a good idea after all. Designed by Jeong-Sun Park.

PizzaKobra Lamp Looks Like Either a Pizza or a Cobra

pizzakobra lamp cobra
The PizzaKobra Lamp was designed by Israeli industrial designer Ron Arad and can change forms in a fluid manner to suit your desires. The freeform lamp evokes the image of a cobra when extended in the upright position and a pizza pie when in it's coiled position. Made of a flexible steel and die-cast aluminum, it has a chrome plated finish for style. Six single watt LED bulbs provide the light.

Lamp Powered by Your Blood

blood powered lamp
Well this is strange. Chalk this up as a sort of pre-Halloween special post here at the Craze. This very strange design for a lamp requires you to break the top of the lamp, dissolve a tablet inside the lamp and then use your own blood to power the light. The whole thing is based on some wild theories about exploiting natural resources, the environment, energy needs of consumers and quality of life. Ok there, Mike Thompson, Blood Lamp designer. I prefer my lighting sources without lessons. So, you don't want light bad enough to cut yourself and drop your blood into it? Well then sit in the dark.

Firefly Chandelier

firefly lamp
I really like the design of this firefly chandelier. Designed by Christopher Moulder, the lamp is actually called Random Orbit but is created to evoke the imagery of circling fireflies. This $1550 high end designer lighting fixture has 21 ten watt Xenon bulbs suspended by phosphor bronze loops radiating from the center like solar flares. Whatever. It's just a super attractive lamp that looks playful yet formal and classy all at once. As the famed frog would say, "dig it". BTW, fireflies might just be the coolest of all bugs- they don't bite and they light up in a really cool way. What more could you ask for in a bug?

Lowlight Keeps the Lights Low, Literally

lowlight 500x325 Lowlight Keeps the Lights Low, Literally
Bob Marley may have sung Turn Your Light Down Low but I don't think he meant to physically move the light to the ground. The Lowlight was designed by Anna Van der Lei and is really the polar opposite of most lamps. The lamp is on the bottom and the pole is on the top. It almost looks like a flying saucer. Or more accurately, a parked saucer. While it's clearly not the most efficient light source ever since most of your light is being used to light the floor, some light is reflected upwards and it will give the room an interesting mood lighting effect while changing your perceptions of what a lamp should be. Like totally blowing your mind, dude.

Powerful Reading Light Attaches to your Glasses

500x reading light 2 Powerful Reading Light Attaches to your Glasses
The Die Nachteule reading light from Germany's Meineeule is said to be the world's most powerful reading light. It's an LED light that attaches to your glasses and has the equivalent power of a 60 watt light bulb. The battery life is good for 40 hours of hardcore reading and it weighs only .28 ounces (8 grams for my metric readers- what's up?). The whole rig makes you look like a laser toting cyborg or something which is certainly cool. As for those who don't wear glasses- you could probably clip this right onto your eyebrow- it might hurt a bit but it would so be worth it for the light. No word on US availability just yet reading fans.
