A Cause For Celebration!

Back in October I submitted a proposal for a solo show at Westbourne Grove Church Artspace and yesterday was absolutely delighted to hear that the selection committee had really liked my work and were happy to offer me a show this summer! This will be the first solo show of my work and I must confess feels like a bit of a "Jim'll Fix It" moment! Westbourne Grove Church Artspace is a contemporary exhibition space in the heart of Notting Hill, London. The first time I heard of the space was when Kirsty E. Smith exhibited her show Close Encounters of a Frillip Moolog Kind, I really liked the space and thought it would be suited to my work. There are two tower rooms that have street level windows and a central lobby space. Here are some pictures of the space being used by other artists:

QuantuMatic

Last week on my jaunt to London Town, one of the events I went to was the launch of the new Finish QuantuMatic!
Now as friends and regular readers will know I am a creature of habit, it takes a lot to make me change my habits, I like to do things my way, even if it might be outdated or longer...
So I went to this launch not knowing anything about why we were going there,I brought along my friend and colleague Dee Anderson to the event, which was great as we were able to spend quality time together on my short visit.
The invitation said to be at the venue for 6pm prompt! So we got there with time to spare and low and behold were met with a bunch of women all lined up in the freezing cold waiting to go in. First thoughts was, can we really be bothered to queue? Then we thought, hell why not! The queue slowly moved and once you had your invite checked you could go upstairs to drop off your coats, then head back down to get your name ticked off, then through to the reception area where a glass of champagne awaited you with some nibbles.

West Midlands based publisher Lollypop celebrated the publication of its new school travel book “Let Me Out! How to enjoy the school run” at a prestigious launch at
    City Hall, London.

Despite pouring rain many braved the weather (several on bikes) to celebrate the launch of “Let Me Out!” written by Ann Kenrick OBE from her first-hand experience. The book is full of  practical suggestions, personal experience and policy review, providing an instruction guide for parents considering doing the school run by bike or on foot and all those working to encourage healthy, happy communities.

The event hosted by Val Shawcross, deputy chair of the Transport Committee and Labour Spokesperson for Transport was a great success. Val reiterated the views of many organisations including that of the NHS and said of walking and cycling “... that it fits so many of our bills, not just the need to improve our environment, reducing the acts of the car, but also to tackle our growing obesity problems and that the top of the priorities we want to see is walking and cycling”.

Shazam tops its $18M with some more money, announces 50 million users

Shazam, a London-based startup that lets you discover music with mobile applications, just announced some major news.

The company provides an audio discovery application for iPhones, Android, BlackBerry and some Nokia phones. It's one of the most stunning and useful pieces of software I have ever used and I must say I'm in love with the app. Have you ever wondered the title of the song playing on the radio or in a club? Well with Shazam there's no need to ask the DJ or call your friend saying "Hey do you know that song that goes lalalala", you just need to put the phone close to the speakers and Shazam will discover the track for you. I use it at least once per day in my car or in clubs, and it has always worked. Impressive.

Back to the news itself, Shazam announced it has now more than 50 million users which is an increase of 15 million users since February of this year.

The company, which previously raised over $18 million from firms like DN Capital, Acacia Capital and IDG Ventures Europe, is now welcoming aboard Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, backers of Google and Amazon, with an undisclosed amount of money.

“This milestone and the backing of KPCB is a testament to both the success and enormous potential of Shazam,” said Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam. “Not only are significantly more people around the world accessing the service every day, they are using it with increased frequency, discovering and acquiring new music and sharing their discoveries with friends all from their mobile phones."

KPCB has one of the most impressive portfolios ever: AOL, Amazon.com, Citrix, Compaq Computer, Electronic Arts, Genentech, Genomic Health, Google, Intuit, Juniper Networks, Netscape, Lotus, Sun Microsystems, Symantec, VeriSign and Xilinx. The investment is being made from its iFund and will enable the company to continue to expand accessibility of the service around the world by continuing to develop applications for additional mobile platforms and in multiple languages.

“Shazam is profitable and experiencing sustained acceleration in its growth rate. We are delighted to be partnering with KPCB, who join our existing investors Acacia Capital and DN Capital and will help us execute against the significant market opportunity ahead.” concluded the CEO.
