The New York Daily News is reporting that the actor who played Gunther, the manager of the Central Perk on Friends is saying a movie adaptation of the TV series is "definitely on." The newspaper also quotes James Michael Tyler as saying "I still keep in touch with a lot of the cast and they say they're really keen about making a movie." Tyler made the comments in London where he was attending the opening of a Central Perk themed coffee shop.
We've Heard This Before...
Of course news, or rumors, about a possible Friends movie have been circulating the entertainment world for quite some time. Lisa Kudrow has indicated an interest in doing a Friends movie, but she's not sure it could actually be done. Kudrow said it "would be fun to be with all those people again." But, she went on to say it would be difficult to do a Friends movie because unlike Sex and the City, which has spun off into two feature films, Friends was shot with multiple cameras in front of a live audience. As a result, it has a completely different feel.
Would a Friends movie work?
While Kudrow is correct, Friends has a totally different feel than other TV made into movie flicks, it just might work. Many times such movies fall flat because those involved in such a shift to the big screen just don't know how to act on a big screen. It's hard for TV stars to make the transition because of the overall feel. However, I do believe a Friends movie could work because the cast has already transitioned to the big screen in other movies. As a result, they already know how to act for a movie.
Will there be a Friends movie? Only time will tell. Would a Friends movie do well at the Box Office. That would all depend on the script. I'm sure the Friends fans would flock to the movie theater to see the flick. But, would it have staying power? Who knows.
