how Twitter made me join Facebook

I've had my Facebook for awhile but it lay dormant and inaccessible to people search as I pondered if it can help me with my online business. There's so much going on in my offline and online life that adding another social network is more work than play to me. Like most social users, I have Friendster, Yahoo 360, Myspace (dead) and Multiply (which was dormant until it enabled cross-posting of Blogger blog posts). I also have multiple personal blogs plus websites of employers that I update daily. Do I really have time for Facebook?? ;-) It also didn't help that Facebook announced recently that everything you put in your FB profile will be THEIR property. Thank god they backtracked after much hullabaloo from FB fanatics.

Around one month ago, I finally joined Twitter (follow my tweets here) for monetary reasons. Twitter is a microblogging service that allows you to broadcast what you want -- but make sure it will fit in 140 characters or less (tweets). Tough for verbose people! Hehe! For most part I'm an early adopter of emerging web technologies but since the dot com bubble bust, I have been wary of joining popular websites especially if the hype is overwhelming. Twitter was in that category but lo and behold! More than 2 years after bursting into the online scene it's still around and gaining more members everyday. In fact, traditional media practitioners, celebrities and politicians are into it already. AND Facebook tried to buy it! Unfortunately for them, Twitter said no. Anyway, I found the tweets incredibly informative (I'm following medical doctors & tech gurus) and I'm definitely enjoying the "Twitter experience" =)

So what has Twitter gotta do with me finally activating my Facebook? (Yeah, I know it took me awhile to come to the point, LOL!) Well, I found out that I can update my FB status with my Twitter feed! I actually don't have to login to Facebook to tell my friends what I'm up to! This means I won't be wasting my time logging in to FB and getting distracted with the quizzes and other addicting apps there ;-) I can update my Twitter (via PC or mobile phone) and it will publish to my Facebook profile. Now isn't that neat? And did you know that Facebook's new homepage that shows REAL-TIME updates is based on Twitter? When Twitter turned down FB's offer to buy it, FB management thought "If we can't buy them, we'll compete with them!" And with 175 million users, Facebook might just bring Twitter down -- OR NOT!

Your friends will soon tire of your Tweets on Facebook and remove you or stop listening to them.
People will tire of your tweets if all you are doing is trying to make money. Good luck with yo...

Hi Dr. Melissa! :)
I was on Facebook too before Twitter but found that I am 'too old' for the students' crowd in FB! Later FB had a lot of ppl who are not teenagers too. I tried a lot of applications on FB but figured out that MineKey and the fake trading game took up least of my time.

When I joined Twitter I didn't look back! The communications may be 'touch and go' but there were always a few people who always say Hello to you again (now and then). I think this is what makes Twitter special! You can join in the conversation anytime by sending a public or private tweet.

Funny thing is, Google also tried to buy Facebook but FB refused to sell its baby. FB, Myspace, Hi-5, Multiply are always compared with Twitter. I don't know which will have the most users but I am sure to stick to FB and Twitter.

Sorry for this long comment - I love to chat! Sometimes my comments is longwinded - ask Amzolt, Adva or Ted (I enjoy their blogs as well)! >,<
