The first bake of 2009 was also some sort of bread, cinnamon rolls to be exact. Maybe I can make a habit out of this, making bread within the first week of the new year. This time round I made bread cones – cone-shaped bread. I came across a recipe from Home Cooking In Montana and I thought it was a pretty bread to make.
The bread is a simple milk and egg dough, nothing too complex. It’s the shaping that requires some skills. It involves hunting for paper to roll into cones, and covering each cone with aluminium foil, and then rolling out the bread dough into long strips and wrapping it round the cone. (sidetrack: I keep mistyping cone as come. Damn Freudian slip!) I love the sheen on the cone from the egg wash, I must add. It looks much less rustic, which really is a euphemistic term for village-like. |

The last day of Chanukah was this past Shabbat. I have a lot of trouble transitioning from a chag* to a regular week; I never want to let go of the holiday: it is my connection with ha-Olam ha-Ruchani*, and I keep wanting to hang on. . .so it was just today that I uploaded my Chanukah pictures and am posting some of them here (and will share them on Me-ander, too).
This year, unlike last year, I took plenty of pics, as we had a full chag (Baruch Hashem), including a friend's annual open-house, a Chabad family dinner and a party of our own on the 6th night, complete with home-made latkes, or levivot* in Hebrew (a joint venture) and home-made sufganiyot* (the Head Chef did it all by himself). It all culminated with a shared family-and-friends-Shabbat-dinner on the last night of Chanukah, at our home. Here are some of the highlights:

It is never easy to be on a diet especially during the holidays. There are steps to take to make sure you enjoy yourself without it costing you pounds and inches being added. First of all don’t think that every party is a free pass to eat what ever you want. The old saying that it is the holidays and the calories don’t count is not true. Second you can eat and enjoy the food you like this time of year but within moderation. Here are some tips to help you survive and still be successful on your diet. - Eat something healthy before you leave the house or host a party. That way you won’t be as hungry when you arrive.
- Put a small zip lock bag of almond or nuts of some kind in your clutch or pocket. That way if you find you are getting hungry and need some energy but want to wait for the main course to be served you can easily slip your hand in and put some on your appetizer plate.
- Where a beautiful outfit so others will be complimenting you on how you look during the evening. There is nothing like positive reinforcement to keep us on track.
- If you are at a party where appetizers are being passed as everyone is visiting take one and nibble. Then look at the others that are being passed. Select on the one that you really would like to eat and make that your next choice instead of tasting all of them.

I had the opportunity to attend the after party for the new film, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. This isn't exactly defined as art house cinema. For those who are not familiar with the womanizing ways of Tucker Max, I will enlighten you. Tucker Max is a boisterous, alcoholic who chronicled his life in a now famous blog turned book turned movie. Most people have a love/hate relationship for the man.
I discovered Max's now infamous blog through a link in a friend's Facebook page. I couldn't believe what I reading. It was so graphic, so over the top, so disgusting- yet I could not stop reading. I read every single blog on the site- pausing only for a bathroom break. It wasn't the verbose writing, it was the truth in which Max spoke. It was clear that he was going to chronicle every detail of his life, no matter what. As a young women I always like to try and get inside a mans head, this blog was akin to discovering a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. While it is safe to say that most men are not Tucker Max, they do hold some parallels. The difference being Tucker always acts on instinct whereas the majority of the public thinks and does NOT react. For example Max has no filter he says what he wants, drinks as much as he wants and manages to almost always get the girl. |

Party Timer Concept Tells you if the Party's Rockin'

If you're like me, whenever you step into the room, you take the party up another notch. But not everyone is clear on exactly how rocking a party is. You might think it was a mellow affair while your buddy might think it was out of control mayhem. There's never been a scientific way to figure out just how rockin' a party is until now with the Party Timer concept.
The Party Timer hangs on a wall and when you're not partying, it's functions as a simple digital clock, like above. But invite a few friends over and the festivities begin. The Party Timer measures the decibel level of the noise coming from the room to determine what type of party you are throwing. Here's a light cocktail party:

The number of Independent voters has increased dramatically since 1995. Depending on whose statistics you read the proportion of Americans registering as political Independents (or decline to state their affiliation) is currently between 38 and 40%; and this is scaring the hell out of both the Democrat and Republican Parties. But Thomas Richard Harry, author and third-party candidate for the U.S Senate in Missouri in 2000, is not afraid at all. In fact, in his latest book, “The Gathering of the Clan,” he takes pains to assert in a logical and persuasive way that the rising tide of Independent voters could very well be the best thing to happen to our society in a long time.

This week is not so much about a recipe as it is about sharing with you the cake that I did for my daugther's birthday. Technically her birthday is later on this month but with school vacation out we figured we'd strike while everyone is still home and get the party done.
K has been working over time like crazy so I didn't really have time to plan out the party the way that I wanted to. Plus there is also the little matter of budget. I simply could not igore that. I spent a lot of time at the dollar store trying to figure out the cheapest way to make party favours and decorations.
As E had invited boys to her party I pretty much figured the whole princess, girly theme was out this year. (sigh) So instead I opted for pretty floral paper plates and cups which had the added bonus of being about a 1/3 of the cost of a Disney themed plates etc.
