LED Light Keyboard Key Dog Collar

led keyboard dog collar
My dog would probably destroy this in about 10 seconds but this is one cool high-tech dog collar. It's made of keyboard keys, each has a small LED light drilled into it. The cool part is that the keys actually spell out the dog's name! Of course this dog collar won't work at all if you give a long name to a small dog or a short name to big necked dog. The lights are powered by a 9V battery in an Altoids tin. Complete how-to available at Instructables if you're handier than I am, but I'm certainly not comfortable enough with electricity to put a homemade battery powered appliance around my dog's neck.

Birdcage Backpacks Lets You Take Your Birds for a Walk

Birdcage Backpacks Lets You Take Your Birds for a Walk

birdcage backpack
I know exactly why the caged bird sings- it's because he wants to go for a walk with you, right? The Pak o Bird is a rugged looking backpack to take your bird out with you. The pack comes in one of three sizes depending upon the size of your fine feathered friend. It's definitely slicker than strapping some shoulder straps onto your existing metal birdcage!

But does a bird really want to go for a walk? Well it would if you bought additional accessories to the $129 backpack like a tray liner or "poop off wipes" (I don't even want to know what that's for, really). The bird does travel in style though, as the birdcage has an included privacy curtain, dragonwood perch, and adjustable food cup. The mesh exterior is see-through yet reasonable chew-proof so your bird won't escape. Is this backpack birdcage for the birds or the birdbrained? I'm not sure.

K-9 Calming Vest Reduces Your Dog's Fireworks Noise Anxiety

k9 calming vest
Most dogs get very anxious and nervous when they hear the loud pops of fireworks. I know that my dog freaks out and starts looking around nervously even if there's fireworks on TV. Thunderstorms too, he hates that. Sometimes during heavy rains, I'll think we have a leak in the roof because I hear water pouring down in the corner, but no- it's just the dog nervously peeing on the rug. Well the K-9 Calming Vest purports to placate your pooch by putting a pouch on the pup. You might ask yourself, "how does this miracle calming vest work, in basic scientific terms?". Let's break it down:

The vest works by being ON the dog. That's it. But what about the deep science and engineering behind the vest? Here, I quote directly "the tight-fitting vest gives your dog a feeling of safety, while the physical sensations of wearing it distracts your dog from focusing on its fears". Yes sir, this vest works by being on the dog and tight. It's just like wearing a pair of tighty whities- you know your boys are in there safe and tight and aren't going to be flopping around in the wind. I'm not buying into this $36 piece of pet voodoo.

Chair Leg Dog Chew Toy

chew leg cover
This might be either the greatest idea ever, or an invitation to reward your dog for bad behavior. The Chew Leg Cover is a rubber chew toy for your dog that goes over the legs of your chairs (or tables). Designed by Jennifer Yoko Olson, it measures just under a foot in height and comes in quite a few colors: natural brown, cream, purple, orange, turquoise and fuchsia.

So if your dog is going to be munching on your furniture legs while you're out, why not cover them up with a safe alternative to protect your furniture from bite marks? On the other side of the coin, are you just encouraging your dog to chew on chair legs by giving them a chew toy on a leg? Obviously I'm no dog behavior or psychology expert, so I guess you have to ask yourself WWCMD (what would Cesar Milan do)? Costs $29.99 each.
