Qur'an: Read it before Burning it

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

General Petraeus is quoted by the Associated Press (on Yahoo! news) as saying that Qur'an burning would inflame passions.

"Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan — and around the world — to inflame public opinion and incite violence,"

The Secretary General of Nato is quoted in a similar vein.

"would be in a strong contradiction with the all the values we stand for and fight for."

Did Christians riot, destroy property and kill people when a photograph was published as "art" showing a crucifix immersed in urine?  Did they riot when elephant dung was used in ersatz  iconography?  But Muslims, whipped to a frenzy by rabid clerics in Juma Salat  riot on the basis of unfounded rumors as well as such egregious offenses as the Motoons & Fitna.

Two Epiphanies

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Over the holiday weekend I had two epiphanies concerning those two topics my mother told me never to discuss in polite company, religion and politics.

The first revolved around religion. Highly regarded physicist Stephen Hawking announces in his new book that God is not an essential ingredient to creation. Indeed the Big Bang can be explained without God in the equation. It is possible, according to Hawking, for something to come from nothing. I'd estimate there were three types of reaction to this finding. Atheists rejoiced. Polite Christians said Hawking was mistaken at best and spiritually lost at worst. Impolite Christians told Hawking that God had some choice words for him upon his imminent death from Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). I was in none of these three camps. I've never called myself an atheist because I find most atheists to be as dogmatic in their disbelief as the most obnoxious Christian. In fact, a conservative friend of mine recently remarked that for folks who don't believe in God, atheists manage to talk about Him almost more than the average religious person. I tend to agree. I've always maintained, I don't know if there is or is not a God. I don't find His existence relevant to my everyday life. I also don't believe that anyone else knows for sure that there is a God.

2 years on and Seven years from 9-11 to 9-12 the brink of collapse

There is a vague idea being promoted strongly in America that '9-12' is about restoring American values. Indeed 9-12 should have deep resonance, as it is associated with the edge of American failure, which had global ramifications. Recently an analysis of the financial events of 2008 was aired and it repeatedly mentioned the day of 9-12.

The day 9-12.

That day Lehman Bros were not the only bank under threat, and banks weren't the only casualty. 9-11 changed the world but arguably 9-12 had a greater effect personally for more people globally, and it seems from all accounts to have affected more American lives. It certainly had ripples everywhere.

On 9-11 Lehman Bros offices in One World Trade Centre and its global headquarters in Three World Financial Centre were destroyed. But they recovered and seemed stronger until one day approached, the day of 9-12. The analysis of Lehman Bros activities indicated that their failure was due to two things, firstly risk taking and secondly assuming that they had eliminated risk. But the aim of all the risk taking was the love of money (and power).

Labor Day casts a grim shadowLabor Day casts a grim shadow

Labor Day has come and gone. The ceremonial ending of summer, a holiday - for federal workers, but not many of the rest of us - has been celebrated, grills made use of. Sadly, however, we find the...

Anti-Israel academics?

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Fred Gottheil has a fascinating look at what sort of 'academic' signs an anti-Israel petition.

Gottheil contacted the academic signatories of an anti-Israel petition and asked them to sign a statement of concern for social justice in the Middle East.
But accepting as genuine the petitioners' stated goal of seeking social justice in the Middle East, I thought it fitting to contact the signatories of the Lloyd petition to offer them yet another opportunity to express their commitment to social justice in the region, this time by endorsing a Statement of Concern regarding human rights abuses practiced against gays and lesbians and against women in general in many of the Middle Eastern countries, including the territories controlled by the Palestinian Authority. The idea was really uncomplicated: Since they expressed a concern about social injustice in Israel, they might also be willing to express their concern about human rights abuses practiced against women, gays, and lesbians in other parts of the Middle East.

Is Rabbi Ovadia the Only Jew Who Reads the Prayer Book?

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef’s ill wishes towards Israel’s Palestinian Arab enemies, including the Palestinian Authority and its Holocaust–denier President, elicited disdain and disavowals from much of the leadership of Israel and the Jewish world.

Rabbi Ovadia’s “words do not reflect the approach of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, nor the position of the government of Israel,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

The Rabbinical Assembly, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the Jewish Theological Assembly and related groups said, “As leaders of the Conservative/Masorti movement, we deplore these recent comments of Former Chief Sephardic Rabbi Ovadia Yosef”.

ADL leader Abe Foxman said, “We are outraged by the offensive and incendiary comments made by Rav Ovadia Yosef.”  And the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations added, “We are disturbed by the reported comments of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.”

Why these entities have reacted this way is an interesting question.

A Media Hype or A Real Thing?: Buying and Using Eco-Friendly Products

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

I am not quite an eco-friendly product enthusiast despite my positive outlook on the importance of the use of and patronage for the said products. Let’s admit it, most of us consumers have not been so keen and zealous in our stance towards green living. I have tried using earth friendly products thus far but only for very few selected items. This kind of a so-so attitude towards going all out for a green world is not only true to me but to the majority, especially those   in developing and least developed economies.       People living in the West such as the United States and other developed and industrialized countries are fortunate enough to have tons of environment related advocacy organizations which are proactive in this endeavor.   Thus, there are more and more people in these countries who have become fully aware and have supported the cause for the common good. But just the same, it is still not enough, people are still not in sync and conscious about the use of organic and eco-friendly home products.
