The Bald Eagle becomes Imperial

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

The modern world tends to use the word 'Imperialism' as an accusation. America for years has project the idea world as being a democratic one, or if not that republican perhaps. But what happens when the leader of a republic who speaks of democracy and consultation, starts behaving like he leads an imperial power? Such was Ancient Rome of Julius Ceasar. Such we have seen, recently.

The founders of the USA were rather influenced by the glories that once were Greece and Rome. One only has see Washington DC to know this. In the era when the US Constitution was written they viewed the glory that was Rome through the misty romantic haze of the distance in time, and through the glasses of a sincere Protestantism that had, with rational triumph, thrown off the shackles of the Holy Roman Empire. When they came to decide the emblem for the USA they rejected Benjamin Franklin's wise advice to take as their symbol a game but humble domestic bird and chose the Bald Eagle, because the eagle was like the Golden Eagle, an emblem of Ancient Rome.

US embargoing arms sales to Israel

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

I have a reader who keeps reminding me of how the Bush administration violated agreements with Israel by selling certain types of weapons to Saudi Arabia. As I noted earlier, that was done with then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's approval.

If this story is true, the Obama administration is doing something far worse to Israel. Although the story is headlined Obama blocks delivery of bunker busters to Israel, that's only half the story (Hat Tip: Memeorandum).
Since taking office, Obama has refused to approve any major Israeli requests for U.S. weapons platforms or advanced systems. Officials said this included proposed Israeli procurement of AH-64D Apache attack helicopters, refueling systems, advanced munitions and data on a stealth variant of the F-15E.

"All signs indicate that this will continue in 2010," a congressional source familiar with the Israeli military requests said. "This is really an embargo, but nobody talks about it publicly."

Ordinary People Running for Congress - A Talk With Congressional Candidate Dave Corsi

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

March 18, 2010 - The economy is terrible. Even with the supposed recovery that elected officials keep talking about, there is little evidence of new jobs. This combined with other monumental issues that include healthcare reform, border control and talk of global warming are putting fire in the blood of average citizens. Citizens who have never seriously thought about running for public office. Citizens who have little or nothing in the way of campaign funds but who have the heart to believe that they can make a difference. Citizens who are fed up with the idea that Washington should be legislating everything from which doctor you use to how much sugar you should consume. People are angry and it is beginning to show. Dave Corsi is one of them.

If you have never heard of Dave Corsi, you can be forgiven. He is running for Congress on the Republican ticket for the New Jersey's 12th District. He says that he leans more towards Libertarian views. In most years, he wouldn't stand a chance. There are certain states in which conservatives have been hunted to near extinction. New Jersey is one of them. But within the past few months and against all odds the state did elect a Republican governor. Like I said before. People are angry.

Corsi is the underdog in his race. In his own words, "I'm not the favorite son." He doesn't have the big funding of some of his rivals but he's running a grassroots campaign that he can be proud of.

A Constitutional Question

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

From Article I – Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution:
“All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.”

The health care bill the Democratic Party leadership is trying to pass (by vote or otherwise) is the Senate bill. This bill is apparently not a product of the reconciliation process since nothing was done to try to reconcile it with the House bill. It is, I think, a revenue bill originating in the Senate. If this is the case, it is unconstitutional.

This would be in addition to its generally unconstitutional content.

Any comments?

We Warned You — So Now What?

In mid-2008, I published Israel (and America) Will Rue the Day that George W. Bush Leaves Office on the now defunct israelenews.com.  The column made clear that while none of the leading US presidential candidates were either truly good for American or friends of Israel, and by any measure, Obama was without question the worst of the lot.  So now, as his mentor Pastor Jeremiah Wright has said, “the chickens are coming home to roost.”

But do American Jews, who overwhelmingly supported Wright’s parishioner, care?  Outside of an uncharacteristic objection from the ADL’s Abe Foxman, who usually saves his protestations for conservatives, and a handful of Congressional Democrats, I haven’t heard many objections  from Obama’s court Jews.  And why not?  That was answered in Were Jewish Obama Voters Fooled?, published last year.

Nobody should be surprised by the actions of Obama and his team. Saddened and worried, yes, of course, but surprised, no.  As Obama lapped up the anti-Israel venom of his Pastor Wright for 20 years and other like-minded friends, of course he would come to have a one-sided view, and it wouldn’t be kind to Israel.

You may remember his apologists and other “experts” telling us:

  • Obama wants to be a domestic president, and will be too busy to worry about the poor Palestinians.

Truth About the “Demon” Pass

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

There is a huge controversy brewing over the potential use of a House voting technique called "Deem and Pass", or as conservative opponents call it, "Demon Pass".

Time for some "Deem and Pass" education.

1. Deem and Pass is hardly unprecedented having been used by both parties at one time or another. The first known instance was in 1933.

2. The reason in 1933 as now was that the House needed to make a tough vote and Deem and Pass allowed them to make the vote without appearing to really have made the vote.

Let’s hit the current situation. The House doesn’t like all the compromises in the Senate bill and there are a number of Representatives who would vote the Senate bill down but vote for the reconciled bill which corrects the compromises (i.e. side deals like Cornhusker Kickback). So, a rule on voting for the reconciled bill is put forth and voted by the entire House. The rule deems the Senate bill (pre-reconciliation) passed for the purposes of voting on the reconciled bill.

Any Representative who does not like the Senate bill and thinks their vote for the “rule” would be viewed as voting for the Senate bill, will vote the rule down.
