April 9, 2009 – The White House came out today saying that the United States needs comprehensive immigration reform. Soon thereafter, the pundits hit the airwaves saying that these “wonderful people” need to be made legal so that they can work and become productive members of society. As a conservative looking at unemployment rates hovering at around 10%, all I can say is that I truly hope the President does go down this path, but not because I think he will succeed.
For each of the past several months we’ve seen new unemployment claims filed in excess of 500,000. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs in this recession. So of course, the Democrats have decided that this is the best possible time for them to push for immigration reform. We obviously need millions of more people competing for the limited number of jobs available. And of course, by legalizing them now, we can make an entirely new group of people eligible for government entitlement programs that we can so easily afford after spending Trillions of dollars on bank bailouts and congressional pork!
Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV) has said that he wants to see an immigration reform bill ready for a Senate vote before the end of this year. And certainly Nancy Pelosi will not want to be left behind on this topic. After all, it was just last month that she told a crowd of illegal aliens that our immigration enforcement efforts were “un-American”.
Any way you slice this legislation, I think that the liberal left (the Dems in particular) will lose. How do you justify legalizing millions of people who broke the law to get here, when Americans who have paid their taxes for years can’t find a job? How do you justify making millions of people eligible for entitlement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid when tax paying Americans can’t find or afford medical insurance of their own?
The answer is that you don’t. In fact, I don’t think anyone can make this argument fly at the present time. But the longer it is in the press, the more it will hurt the Democrats. And it will make for some entertaining television as they try to concoct their answers.
Illegal aliens are not immigrants. When someone immigrates to a country, they do so with the intent of obeying their adopted country’s laws and customs. But most illegal aliens are here to take advantage of the opportunities that the United States offers without any intention of adopting the American way of life or even learning English. The result of this has been “press one for English” when you call customer service lines, and increases in taxes to support the invading hordes.
So, Mr. President, please try to tackle this issue before the 2010 mid-term elections. This is one issue where eloquent rhetoric will serve as fodder for everyone opposed to your effort.
