Rescue Cat hit me up with his impressive new single, £10 Bag, a couple of months ago. Had it been a tape I would have worn it out by now. Imagine a collision between White Town's legendary 'Your Woman' single and Popcorn, the theme from my favourite 80s pc game Digger. With an official itunes release scheduled I thought I should share it with the world. With a Glastonbury performance this year under his belt and international endorsements its time to adopt Rescue Cat. |

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to a lot of great music, it has a long history of music. The music coming out of the Bay Area itself is very distinct. The "hyphy" music scene has been elevating since the mid-1990s, now at a point of mainstream attention while it slips away. The movement is based off the word "hyperactive" and "hyphy" being coined early on by Keak Da Sneak. The elements of the music are very similar to all of hip hop's mainstream sub-genres yet with a distinctive boost in the bass and claps in the beats. The lyrics of the music are almost redundant at this point, with early definitions of words that now seem to stick through every song. Popular hyphy artists include: E40, Keak Da Sneak, Beeda Weeda, Mistah FAB, The Federation, Zion I, and the late Mac Dre. AmpLive (left) and Zumbi (right) Since the elevation of the subgenre, it hasn't seen much development and most artists do a great job of putting hooks and beats together yet no real substance comes out from entire albums. Zion I, a duo from Oakland, California, have shown a lot of change since their first release about 10 years ago. The duo consists of producer AmpLive |

Lakeland man gets 2 years in prison for rap song lyrics
I am becoming a little more than concerned for the First Amendment here lately. Let me state first that I do not like Rap music and second Antavio Johnson appears to be less than a reputable citizen. Having said that I still disagree with the decision to charge Johnson with a crime for his completely offensive musical tirade against police; of which I am one.
Here is an excerpt from the rap song "Kill Me a Cop," written and recorded by Antavio Johnson:
Hi, Grady
I gotta grudge with the judge Rugers for prosecutors Calicos for C.O.'s
Bullet holes for P.O.'s This is reminiscent of Ice T's "Cop Killer". That song also stirred a strong reaction but did not result in anyone being criminally charged, nor should it have. I found the song more amusing than anything, especially considering Ice T spent a majority |

Beastie BoyAdam Yaunch (AKA MCA) has been diagnosed with cancer of the preaortic gland and lymph node. The rapper, flanked by friend and bandmate Ad-Rock, took a novel approach to breaking the news to fans by broadcasting it to the world via a youtube video and added that he expects to fully recovery. However, inevitably their tour schedule and imminent album 'Hot Sauce Committee', due in September, will be delayed until he gets better. I was lucky enough to catch the Beastie Boys in September 2007 at Brixton Academy in what was a stellar performance and I can't wait to see them again. Here is to a speedy recovery to the man who has got more rhymes than he's got grey hairs, "and that's a lot because I've got my share". |

Despite only showing up on my radar recently Why? rapidly rose to being the band I have played more than any other so far this year. This doesn't entirely surprise me as i have been on a mission to play them to everyone I've met since I got a feel for their standout track 'The Hollows'.
Their latest album Alopecia, from which the track is taken, is dotted with dramatic musical landscapes and melodic twists. Their indie rock execution is a perfect vehicle for Yoni Wolf's trademark nasal half-rap half-sung reflections. It is fitting that he comes from a hip-hop background as his preferred story telling delivery is at times action packed and at time tongue-in-cheek but always instantly quotable. Enjoy these superb tracks from Alopecia out now on Anticon Records.

Move over Kanye West there's another rapper in town who's leading the way in reinvigorating the hip-hop genre. Theophilus London offers slick beats, 80's electro sounds and the nice feeling of fresh blood into the industry. Following in very similar footsteps as Lupe Fiasco and joining the 'Backpack rap' troop it seems this young man is poised to take the reigns after Lupe's proposed retirement after his next album. His mixtape, This Charming Mixtape, shows he's not just influenced by rap but The Smiths play a part in his dynamic musical background. By far our favourite track is Computer Love featuring Swedish singer Lykke Li however the production behind Cold Pillow could easily be mistaken for a Jay-Z joint, it's that good. Day One Fans on the other hand sounds like a Chromeo track - he's already covered so many bases so many rappers fear to do.
