Crocodile tears from the parents of Jihad Jamie?

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Alec Rawls  has issued another blogburst, this one reports on an interview with the parents of  another native born mujahid.  Unfortunately, the WSJ interview which serves as Alec's source is not entirely clear.  We don't know the circumstances surrounding  either conversion involved in the story nor do we have clarity on when Ms. Paulin-Ramirez  broke off contact with her family and left town.

Unlike Alec, I am not comfortable in judging the sincerity of Ms. Paulin-Ramirez's mother and step father with the  limited information available.  I pass this through to you, and  will let you make your own judgment in the fullness of time as more information becomes available.

There is a moral to this and other militant convet stories.  Anyone who is dabbling in Islam with a view toward adopting it should read the Qur'an and Sahih Bukhari so as to become sufficiently familiar  to understand the cult's doctrines and practices.   Anyone who has a female relative who is socializing with male Muslims should make certain that she is  aware of the Islamic attitude toward women.  I suggest downloading and sharing this flyer:  Islamic Misogyny.

Scientology Defectors out church as scam

Humanities & CultureSpirituality and Faith

In what can only be described as "not news" here is another story of long time Scientologists leaving the church and outing it for it's deceptive and abusive practices. NYTimes Article

I for one have a really difficult time understanding how people can be that gullible. So far every  time I have seen a Scientologist on television my spidey-senses start going berserko-ballistic. These people are f**king creepy. It doesn't help to have Tom Cruise on your payroll, he's a complete loon when he isn't acting for a movie. John Travolta is only slightly less ridiculous, but both of them show their true colors whenever the anti-Scientology crowd shows up at one of their events. The Xenu folks love to harass Scientologists. Can you blame them?

I have seen numerous videos in which a very agitated Tom Cruise or John Travolta refuse to leave the building they are in until someone removes the Xenu people from their presence. Seriously? What? Are you scared of them? Aren't you a good Scientologist? Don't you have an answer for every thing they could possibly say to you? No? Well then. I guess you both are just whiny little sissies who need to grow a pair or just stay indoors where it's safe.

"Thou Shall Not Covet the Ass of Thy Neighbor's Wife"

Introduction:
The title is just an amusing little play on words I heard in the 6th grade, but it demonstrates how statements in the Old Testament can be mistranslated. Never the less, the term "donkey" found in this week's portion has indeed been misunderstood by the rabbis for millennium just as has the term "goat".
Although this article will be dealing with some aspects of this week's Torah portion, it is not meant as a full commentary. Anyone interested in reading a commentary on this week's portion should click my name at the top of this page and locate on my homepage the article: "Commentary on Biblical Law: Ki Tisa" (By the way, in this article we also will not be dealing with "goats", so if that subject interests you on my homepage you can also find the articles "Why a Goat" and "Milk, Butter and Meat").

Answering Ima Muslim

World AffairsPolitics & Opinions

Terrorism Fatwa: Feces     That blog post drew a series of comments from  Ima Muslim, the  most recent of which deserves  a post of its own.  Due to the target rich environment, I have reproduced the comment in a block quote. I will mark  selected important points with superscripts, linking them to my responses in an enumerated list below.

War is waged only to defend the religious community against oppression and persecution, because the Qur'an says that "persecution is worse than slaughter" and "let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression" (Qur'an 2:190-193). Therefore, if non-Muslims are peaceful or indifferent to Islam, there is no justified reason to declare war on them. 1

the Qur'an also says, "Let there be no compulsion in religion" (2:256).

Forcing someone at the point of a sword to choose death or Islam is an idea that is foreign to Islam in spirit and in historical practice. There is absolutely no question of waging a "holy war" to "spread the faith" and compel people to embrace Islam; that would be an unholy war and the people's forced conversions would not be sincere.

Day 4 - of 30 Days of Character Development - Humility

CounselingSelf Management

I took and Pride Test and as promised here is my result:
47 - You are learning to be more and more humble. Way to go! I felt good with that score. I knew I was not going to get the first one (genuine humility) and I was hoping I wouldn't get the next one. I really do think this is accurate because as I was looking at the different statements I could see how much I have changed in many areas. Five years ago my score would have been much higher. I'm not happy about that but I am happy that I am seeing change.

So as we continue our week of looking at Humility, how do we get there? If we are struggling with Pride of any kind how do we change that around. Here are some suggestions but really as with any change we bring into our life.......We have to first recognize it as a problem
  • We then have to be willing to do the "hard work" of change
  • We then have to go to God for strength and a humble heart, asking for His help
  • We then have to be very aware of our behavior - asking an accountability person to help us, we all have blind spots we can not see. We have to ask ourselves hard questions everyday as we encounter different situations.
  • We then can start the process of change, and it is a process!
