 In this new “age of the entrepreneur” that I mentioned a couple of days ago, we are seeing a big move from employees to self-employed specialists. As an aside, we need a new title for these people. None of the existing titles, like business consultant, independent contractor, professional advisor, business mentor, or freelancer, seem to bring credibility to these roles.
Business consultant, especially, is a bad word these days. For most people, it conjures up an image of someone who produces pitches but doesn’t get their hands dirty, or an executive temporarily out of work. Actually, a good consultant is the epitome of an entrepreneur, running his own business, dependent on his own skills, with all the attendant risks.
At any rate, you should realize that all businesses today are relying more and more on non-employee specialists to get their jobs done, minimizing the long-term commitments to payroll and benefits, the expensive training, and the crises of downsizing and layoffs. Here are just a few examples:
