Winter Sports: Skiing

LifestyleHealth, Sports & Fitness

Winter season is not only rich with holidays and a lot of free time. It’s a season of fantastic sports activities and fun. While you may think that winter time is not appropriate for sports, winter sports represent a special class in sports activities and are no less popular than basic sports. Such popular winter sports as skiing, ice hockey, snowboarding, sledding and many varieties of ice skating provide a lot of fun and physical activity. One of the most popular winter sports is skiing.

Skiing represents an old and traditional to northern countries activity which includes a lot of Olympic disciplines. While for the most of the people skiing is a recreational sport, there are a lot of types of skiing used in professional sports. For example, Winter Olympic Games feature such disciplines as Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, biathlon, ski jumping and also Nordic combined.

Bye Bye, Dubai

Law and SocietyMiddle East

Dubai, the Persian Gulf emirate which grew into a fantastical, magical world with the tallest planned skyscraper in the world and palm tree-shaped islands, might be going bye bye. Dubai World cannot pay pack its loans and is asking for a 6-month moratorium on repaying its $60 billion debt, which is sending the international financial world reeling. (Hat tips to Rafi, and Yeranen Yaakov).

Now what if they had, with all that investment money, helped out their own brethren, say, the so-called Palestinians, in building an infrastructure of a new "Palestinian" state? Wouldn't that have shown the world that the Arabs do care for their own people, and are working towards building a better future for themselves?

Instead, they built a Middle Eastern fantasy land. And now the bubble has burst. Good thing Israel didn't BUY much into Dubai. . .

(But boy, do I love those hotel interiors!)

Arachova upper town w mountains

Few people associate Greece with snow skiing.  Yet it presents a great way to have a skiing holiday while adding a little culture to your apre's ski.

Last year in May when we visited the ancient site of Delphi we also spent some time in the town of Arachova, near the Mt. Parnassos ski area.  We enjoyed it and could see it would be a lively place during the ski season.

The report below, lifted directly from Athens News Agency, indicates that it is almost time to go back.

Ski resorts in northern Greece ready for first visitors

Maintenance work in most of the ski resorts in the northern part of the
country has been completed and all the facilities are ready for
visitors, as the first snow has started to fall in those regions.

The Mt Voras (Kaimakcalan) crown in the prefecture of Pella is already
covered with snow and temperature has dropped several degrees below
zero. The ski resort will be in full operation after the maintenance of
the ski lifts is completed.

In Naousa, the "Tria-Pente Pigadia" ski resort is ready for winter

Why You Want To See The 2010 Winter Olympics - Events To Dazzle You

LifestyleTravel

For many people in the US and North America, traveling around the world to see the Olympic games is just something that we know we can't do.  So we sit at home and watch them on television.  But we still wish that we were there, that we could feel the snow fall on our cheeks, see the skiers slice down the slopes, hear the hits of the hockey players.  Well, this year, you can as the 2010 Winter Olympics are in Vancouver Canada.

With the 2010 Winter Olympics being in Vancouver this year, it makes it super easy to book accommodations, travel to the Olympics, and actually watch these wonderful games in person.  Before you head up to Canada for the games, do you know which events are even held during the 2010 Winter Olympics?  Here is a list and short description of each event to help you determine which ones you don't want to miss:

1. Alpine Skiing - this is one of the fastest downhill skiing events, where the skiers will reach over 130 mph, and hit vertical drops that will range from 180 to 1,100 meters down.  On this path are specific gates that they must go through or risk being disqualified.

Spudski Ski Pole Shaped Potato Masher

spudski Spudski Ski Pole Shaped Potato Masher
There has never been a more natural combination in the history of mankind like skiing and mashed potatoes. Both come in powdered form. One has a milk run, the other just has milk. After a long day of carving up the slope, there's nothing better than mashed potatoes (or smashed potatoes if you want to get a bit extreme). Crushed tubers, FTW.

The Spudski Potato Masher looks like an old fashioned ski pole. It has an ergonomic handle and a detachable mashing plate for easy cleaning. This spud splatterer is 10 inches tall and $15 if you're looking to fashion your ski house's kitchen with appropriate kitchen tools. Ski season is just around the corner but it's always mashed potato season. Pure gravy, baby!

skull candy headphones goggle 500x278 Ridiculous Looking Headphones and Matching Ski Goggles
Just in time for summer, it's a post about ski goggles!! Take a gander at these ridiculous looking headphones and matching ski goggles from Skull Candy. I guess if you're the type of person who likes to match their ski goggles to their headphones, then maybe the style is for you. To me it looks like 1987 drove up in a Delorean, said "totally gnarly, dude" and then barfed dayglow all over it.
