An accidentally cut piece of apple left in "highly-trafficked" area of the kitchen attracted ants within 30 minutes.  But have you ever seen a fruit where no ants nor flies come to it after it's opened for more than 9 hours in tropical Singapore?  In room temperature and away from direct sunlight.  I have - just 3 weeks ago (May 2009)!   It was a genetically-modified durian !


The same results for MARGARINE (vegetable oil blasted with hydrogen) - no ants and no flies (a 3-day experiment), although margarine/vegetable oil was not genetically-modified.  (Do you know that margarine is really trans-fat while butter is not?)

What's gene-splicing?  It's a little like playing with a jigsaw puzzle.  When they splice the genes of food, they may take a characteristics of a fruit and merge them with another gene that gives the new fruit another characteristic.  For example, if there's a way for Gene Scientists to do it, they may be able to create a Durian without its famous "foul smell" replaced with the smell with that of say, a "mango".  (If scientists have a way to manipulate the sun and the moon, they would also try to modify planets!  lol )


Why are Genetically-Modified Foods made?

  • Previously grown on 1 hectare of land, now grown using only 1 kilometre of soil/land.  (Land-conserving, money-saving.)
  • Previously trees bearing fruits in 10 to 20 years (eg. Durian trees), now producing within months.  (Farmers and food manufacturers get to "produce more" and sell more!)
  • Previously grown on fertile soil, now grown on soil left with less than 10 mineral elements (organic soil has at least 76 nutritious elements but is more pricey).
  • Previously grown without harmful insecticides and herbicides, now grown with all such toxic
  • Previously available in one shape or colour, now GMO fruits can be colourful or square!
  • Previously cannot last without refrigeration, now GMO food may be able keep for months without refrigeration!
I had a friend who responded,"I can't see how some foods can last without refrigeration except when they are injected with embalming liquid!  Yikes!  What are placed in GMOs?"   It isn't embalming liquid!

In "cartoon form" it's theorotically possible to wake up with a horn of rhino - thanks to genetic engineering!


How are our Natural Foods (tomatoes, brussels, anti-cancer vegetables, anti-diabetes Red Cayenne Pepper, etc) affected?


GMed foods have negative affects on the quality of lives (if our lives are not taken).  I mean, can you imagine a beautiful flower "mated" with pigs?  Or fish with donkeys?  Approximately a third of the world's natural crops are facing extinction due to the use of chemical fertilisers and herbicides/insecticides; GMed crops may grow faster but may also produce more stubborn super-weeds.

To grow "more produce in shorter span of time which spells more profit" is realistically a dream as genetic engineering technology is in its infancy and shown time and again as failures.  GMed cotton balls from cottonseed plants drop and rot before they are ripe; some varieties of GMed seeds do not sprout; animals fed wth GMed foods become sterile or die.  The costs of commercial pesticides have made many farmers switch back to organic farming.    Why then do some farmers agree to GMing their crops?   This part explores the real reasons why farmers agree to GMing crops  (link is available after June 12th '09 - please check back to Bloggersbase!)

Environmental-wise, genetic restructuring of our Earth's natural seeds will, in the long run, render many seeds sterile.  GMO foods require increased use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides (amongst other chemicals) to create GM monocultures (to create GMed vaccines like the Hepatitis-B vaccines).  And yet ironically, genetically-modified or GM corn and cotton are engineered to produce their own built-in pesticide in every cell.  When insects bugs bite the GMed plant, the poison splits the bugs' stomach and kills them.

Genetic engineers insert  BT genes (Bt-genes are produced from soil bacteria "Bacillus thuringiensis") into corn and cotton, so the plants do the killing!  Now, imagine animals eating such GM food - which will be discussed in Part 3!
