[ I am blogging a lot about foods these days (or what's in them).  They have a direct impact to our health.  This blog entry is part of a 7-part series (of which I may post one a day or several parts in a day)!  Should a link not work, please do not panic - do check back to Bloggersbase the next day for fresh Health-related Content!   Bookmark to visit again or print as you wish, no voting needed unless you really wish to!   I encourage you to drop a comment here or tweet me.   Thank you for reading May everything good come your way!  :-)  ]

Genetically-Modified (GM) Food Experiments Conducted on Animals

Have you heard of/seen Glow-In-the-Dark (genetically-modified monkeys)?    While some GMed animals can now glow in the dark (monkeys, fish and puppies), these animals cannot survive in the wild without their natural camouflage.

GMed mice are not afraid of cats and their natural preys; GMed cats no longer shed fur (so you don't need to keep cleaning up).  Also, there's no long-term studies to see if GMed animals and/or GMed food pose risks to our plant and animal health, because they have not been around long enough to be tested in different climates and different situations.

The only way for GMed food to be identified is to have them tagged with antibiotics.  These minute traces of antibiotics in GMed food open up to a wide range of problems associated with bacterial resistance (harder for humans to fight illnesses).  [ There will be more "research groups" requiring donations and funding to create more prescription drugs that may not work to fight new and never-before diseases. ]

Buffaloes in India that ate GMed cottonseed
had complications such as premature deliveries, abortions, infertility, and prolapsed uterus.  Milk production and performance of lactating showed significant differences between cows fed GM and non-GM feeds.  Many calves died.

On January 3rd 2008, 13 buffaloes who grazed GMed cottonseed plants fell sick the next day; all died within 3 days.  Buffalo that graze on matured non-GMed cotton plants for past eight years do not suffer from such complications.

Sheep fed GMed cotton plants (in India too) were dead within 30 days; those that grazed on natural cotton plants remained healthy.  Post mortem of sheeps that grazed on GM cotton plants, showed severe irritation and black patches in both intestines and liver (as well as enlarged bile ducts).

GMed cottonseed plants also killed 30% of pollinating bees in the fields of Thailand. - Institute for Science in Society, London.

GMed Tobacco Plants in sheepCSIRO spliced genes of a tobacco plant to place into sheep.  Sweat glands started to secrete Chitinase that kills blowfly larvaes by dissolving the larvae's endoskeleton.   Err....nicotine in lamb chops anyone?

GMed soy (soya beans) has up to seven times more trypsin inhibitor (non-GMed unfermented soy also has this inhibitor too but in lesser amounts). Not long after GMed soy was introduced into the UK, soy allergies skyrocketed by as much as 50%.

When GMed soy was fed to female rats, most of their babies died within three weeks; those that survived were also found to be sterile or had difficulty getting pregnant.  Only 1 in 10 babies born to rats fed with non-GMed soy died; those who survived and fed with non-GM soy were also bigger in size.  (Elevated levels of estrogen due to ingestion of GMed soy, are also known to be damaging to health of animals and human beings.)

When male rats were fed GMed soy (aka Terminator Crops), their testicles appeared dark blue instead of the normal pink. (The genetically-modified soy made in this case, was not created with the intention to discolour any organs.)  These rats also did not show any significant weight gain.

Mice fed GMed soy had young but deformed sperm cells and altered DNA, leading to infertility.

In an Austrian government study, mice fed GM corn had fewer and smaller babies, when compared to those fed non-GMed corn.  Professor Bob Orskov, director of the International Feed Resource Unit (Aberdeen, Scotland), said he would not drink milk from cows fed the genetically modified (GM) fodder maize, known as Chardon LL.  (A 1998 Swiss study showed that GMed corn also produced toxic effects in insects that are beneficial to the ecological system.)

In 2001, taco shells and other corn products in the USA were recalled because they were found to contain GMed corn (Starlink).  GMed corn causes anaphylaxis.  In the UK, anaphylactic shock has increased by 560% since the introduction of GMed foods from the USA.  France reported a 5 fold increase.

In 2002,  Syngenta (British-Swiss biotech giant that consists of British drug giant AstraZenca and the Swiss drug giant Novartis) paid farmer Gottfried Gloeckner 40,000 Euros in compensation.  Gottfried's cows died after eating Syngenta's GMed corn.

"Scientists investigating a spate of illnesses among people living close to fields of GMed corn crop in the Philippines believe that the crop may have triggered fevers, respiratory illnesses and skin reactions." - The Guardian, February 28th 2004

GMed corn has been banned in Germany since Feb 2000.  The EU had decided to ban GMed soya beans and Canola (from Canada) and instead opened doors to no GMO food products from Brazil.  GMed corn that were initially planned for human consumption was scrapped but ended up as animal feed!!

In the USA, about 24 farmers reported thousands of pigs became infertile/sterile after consuming certain GMed corn varieties.  The same happened to cows and bulls who ate those GMed corn.  Some had false pregnancies; others gave birth to bags of water!  - "Hog Breeding Problems" by Jim Riddle

GMed Rice were said to have an increase in protein by as much as 20%.  But the increased protein content was probably due to a decrease in moisture rather than true increase in protein; this puts a question mark over the significance of GMed Rice.

Dr. Pusztai's experiments with GMed potatoes showed immune system damage in rats that ate them for more than 100 days.  (A seperate British study revealed that GMed potatoes are 20% lower in proteins, sugar and enzymes.)  A similiar experiment done on GMed tomatoes had 7 out of forty rats dead within two weeks.

A special mention about  Dr. Arpad Pusztai !  Susan Bardócz (author of Polyamines in Health & Nutrition) and Charles Benbrook were then part of Dr.Pusztai's team. In Dec 1999, Dr.Pusztai' was abruptly (and unfairly) removed/suspended from his research project which he conducted at the Rowett Institute (Aberdeen).

In Aug of 1999, Dr. Pusztai was blamed for submitted his findings to World in Action instead of scientific forums.  More info:  Psrast.org

Dr. Stanley Ewen
of the pathology department at Aberdeen University repeated the experiments and reached similar conclusions to Dr. Pusztai's.  It was a chance to justify Dr. Pusztai's findings.  But Professor Phillip James and  Dr. Andrew Chesson (audit team of Rowett Institute) did not turn up at the meeting of COST 98 Action (European Union Programme) in Lund, Sweden, where Dr. Ewen submitted his findings.

Professor Edilbert van DriesscheandProfessor Thorkild C. Bøg-Hansen (University of Copenhagen), joint organisers of the COST 98 meeting, issued a memorandum supported by over 20 other leading scientists who had studied Dr. Pusztai's findings.

Their memorandum concludes, "There is no doubt in our minds that the reviews will remove the stigma of alleged fraud and will restore Dr. Pusztai's scientific credibility."  Dr. Vyvyan Howard, foetal and infant toxico-pathologist at the University of Liverpool also felt Dr. Pusztai's findings were sound.

Dr. Joseph Cummins (aka Joe Cummins), Emeritus Professor of Genetics at the University of Western Ontario, Canada described the Rowett Institute's treatment of Pusztai as "a great injustice", adding that the "Institute continues to look inward to cover up its mistakes".

Eminent scientists like Dr. Pusztai have not only raised serious concerns about the way research into GM food is being conducted, but that those who have dissenting voices are being suppressed and have had their careers ruined, and sometimes their health.  (Dr. Pusztai suffered a mild heart attack brought on by the stress caused by trying to restore his scientific reputation and the credibility of his research.)

In 2003, an outspoken biologist,Ignacio Chapela, lost his tenure in 2003 after objecting to university's $25 million deal with another Swiss-based biotech company, Norvatis Corp. (Original news released by Michelle Locke, Associated Press)

Prominent FDA scientists had repeatedly expressed their profound fears and reservations but it's unfortunate their voices are muted due to intense political pressure from the American government in its effort to promote profit-potentials of a nascent biotech industry.

What hope is there for the scientists who sit on the advisory committees that regulate GM products?  These committees rely almost entirely on data submitted by the corporations, and sometimes corporations lie.  Independent Science is a myth without legal protection for scientists

Crop tested by "Grainseed" gave poor results resulting in forgery of scientific facts

Here's a short video from UFOtv.com that exposes a vast conspiracy to contaminate and control the world's food supply through genetic engineering of food crops:

The experience of actual GM-fed experimental animals is scary!   Perhaps USA's epidemic of food allergies and asthma is a casualty of genetic manipulation.  According to UFOtv.com 80% of food sold in North America already has ingredients made of GMOs that have not been adequately tested for safety.  I arrive at the conclusion that it is an understatement to say GMed food has life-threatening allergenic properties (causing allergies/irritation).

Genetic Engineering Technology gives short-term "benefits" and long-term nightmares.
