Who are Genetically-Modifying Mother Nature's Natural Seeds?

There are many bio-tech companies who are genetically modifying our foods and Earth's natural seeds.  However one giant biotech and agricultural company stands out - MONSANTO.  Monsanto is modifying 90% of the world's natural seeds.  (UK-based Novartis AG comes in a close second of the world's largest agricultural company.).

Monsanto does not sell directly to you, the consumer.   Monsanto (with the help of Donald Rumsfield) gave this world harmful artificial sugar, Aspartame.  Monsanto now wants to modify SEEDS of fruits, etc.

If you are not aware of who Rumsfield is, here's some quick info.  He used to work for Monsanto, then FDA (to say aspartame is safe) and then moved on to become USA's Secretary of Defense.  The man who was responsible for making Bush believe that a war against Iraq was justifiable and necessary (rumoured that he has some help from Dick Cheney), he stepped down in November 2006.  [ More info ]  He also made a 5 million killing over sales and distribution of Tamiflu (for Bird Flu aka Avian Flu).  Some people wondered if he's anything to do with the oppression of family-run poultry farms so Tyson Chicken gets the monopoly.   (Many believe that Sars, the Avian Flu, HFMD and the recent H1N1 (Swine) Flu were manufactured in science labs.  As we know it, Donald Rumsfield was "well-versed" in biochemical warfare.)

Dr. Michael A. Friedman, the new clinical-research chief of Searle, a Monsanto corporation, worked with the National Cancer Institute for 12 years, as well as the FDA. Dr. Friedman too, says that aspartame does not cause Cancer.  (Not hard to figure out who is protecting our "public interest in health".)  This information is courtesy of Johan of Kopyme.com

Monsanto was profitable in the late 1990s, partially due to a pharmaceutical unit launching the most successful product in the history of the drug business (Tamiflu).  With GMed foods, perhaps Monsanto forgot people don't like the ideas of pesticides and drugs in the BT genes of GMed food.

Here is Monsanto's advertisement is on page 7 of the latest issue of the National Geographic Magazine:-

Monsanto gave you harmful aspartame, now they want to give you harmful GMOs

Like the manufacturers of Splenda/sucralose, Monsanto has adopted a mission statement to be the "global leader in LAND CONSERVATION. and in producing more food to feed more people".

Should food sufficiency be attained at the cost of our environment and health?

Will the extra food be going to the poor and malnourished third world country, Monsanto??

To my understanding, more than 65% of the cultivated areas of North-Eastern India is rain-fed (where GMO seeding experiments have started).   When there's rain, insects usually stop feeding on plants and crops. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are unnecessary; seeds injected with the BT genes are unnecessary.  [ BT genes are produced from soil bacteria "Bacillus thuringiensis" and transferred into the cores of crops like corn and cotton; the plants do the killing of insects and bugs.  That's killing insects AND poultry and farm animals.  And if the animals do not die, they land up served on our lunch and dinner plates.  Steak....anyone?  ]

Contrary to the assurances of Monsanto and other biotech companies that genetic engineering is precise and simply extends conventional techniques, it is actually quite different.  Genes do not operate alone, they interact with one another.  No one knows how to artificially "control" or determine a single function of a gene without triggering other undesirable or unpredictable outcomes.  (In response to this, a religious friend of mine said,"God wants us to acknowledge Him as the only sole CREATOR.  No genetic engineer will be able to achieve what He made.")

Farmers too are NOT achieving higher profits promised by Monsanto and other biotech firms [ reference: Soil Association (UK's leading organic organization) ].  For example, the delayed ripening of  GMed tomatoes (Calgene's Flavr Savr) was very prone to bruising. This forced farmers to spend millions of dollars re-equipping their harvesting and handling systems.  Eventually the intention to genetically-modify tomatoes were abandoned.

Another farmer in Ottawa, Tony Huether planted 3 kinds of GMed canola seeds (Monsanto's ROUDUP, Aventis' Liberty and Cynamid's Pursuit) thinking he will need to use less costly herbicides.  In 3 years, he had to fork out more money to use more lethal chemical herbicides to remove the "super-weeds" of the canola plants!

Said another farmer who wants to remain anonymous,"Monsanto wants to force us to buy its patented GMed crops."  Since 2003, Monsanto's attorney has sent their threats of legal action, to more than 400 farmers (over alleged patent infringement).  A few farmers were scared enough to submit to Monsanto's demands although the thought of working as a serf does not appeal.

40,000 farmers in India alone have committed suicide because they are forced to sign contracts with Monsanto.  From the looks of the current situation, Monsanto buying patents on LIFE-FORMS will continue to force farmers to pay for "the right to farm".  If Monsanto can modify gases, I certainly don't hope to pay for my right to breath oxygen!  lol

Monsanto's GMO Milk

Monsanto is not only playing with GMed crops and GMed animals in India, Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST) is still injected into dairy cows in the USA to increase milk-production.   (No other biotech company is producing this artificial bovine growth hormone.Although this growth hormone is banned in Canada, it may not be banned elsewhere.  What you (and I) may be drinking is Drugged Milk.

American dairies responding to the health concerns of consumers by not injecting their herds are battling with Monsanto for their right to label their milk as 'rBGH-free'.  In 1989, Monsanto’s PR firm created “the Dairy Coalition,” a group that included researchers funded by Monsanto.  The Dairy Coalition  tried to pressure editors of the USA Today, Boston Globe, New York Times and others, to stop reporting news of rBGH.

The potential link between rBGH and cancer was one of the topics revealed in a four-part news series set to air in February of 1997 by a Tampa-based Fox TV station. But because of Monsanto's threatening letters, FoxTV never aired the topic. The reporters who had created the series later testified that they were offered hush money to leave the station and never speak about the story again. They declined.  This story is detailed in Jeffrey M Smith's Seeds of Deception.

Monsanto had a reputation for bribery too.  The Ottawa Citizen [October 23, 1998] reported one scene this way: 'The senators sat dumbfounded as Dr. Margaret Haydon told of being in a meeting when officials from Monsanto, Inc., the drug's manufacturer, made an offer of between $1 and $2 million to the scientists from Health Canada - an offer she told the senators could only have interpreted as a brine.  The meeting was about whether rBGH (genetically-modified growth hormones) should be allowed.

America is currently, the only country whose FDA approves of GMed milk.  The FDA and Monsanto tried to "cover up" the effects of the growth hormone by saying that it had only affected a handful of cows with infected udders.  Using the Freedom of Information Act, it was found that more than 9,500 cows from 500 farms were infected with cancerous tumours, etc.  Many cows could not even stand or focus.

Since Nov 2008 Monsanto's PR officers said they would file for bankruptcy (in light of bad reputation over artificial sugar, aspartame) but clearly the company has not yet dissolved.  They've also renamed some of their subsidiaries to Pharmacia Corp, in the hope that people won't link it to Monsanto.

Clearly, governments - yours and mine, are partially responsible for allowing GM foods into supermarkets.  How much of our natural whole foods are GM foods?  That, I have no answer to.  If you know, please leave a comment!

If foods are to be naturally wholesome and nutritious, it may means a GREAT REDUCTION in food trade and world trade.  And most conglomerates don't want to place that dent in their business profitability.  Many food manufacturers think that their products cannot do without toxic preservatives and harmful GM genes and substances and that our foods cannot be stored for longer periods of time.  The merits and advantages of our forefathers' fermented fruits and vegetables (like pickled pineapples and cucumbers in Malay dish known as achar) are almost forgotten.

In other words, we may be throwing away old but safe fermentation methods left by our forefathers - in favour of newer and perhaps more dangerous technologies to make our foods last longer.

Their Responses:  FDA, USDA and the White House

Even in the early 1990s, scientists at USA's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had warned about all GMO-related problems.   But their warnings fell on deaf ears!   Ignoring FDA's warnings, the White House ordered FDA to continue promoting .  FDA responded by recruiting Michael Taylor, Monsanto’s former attorney, to head up the formation of GMO policy.  Mr. Taylor later became Monsanto’s vice president. [ Credits for this info: Biointegrity.org ]

Up to this day, the American government denied knowledge of scientists’ concerns and declares that no safety studies on GMOs are required.

Currently the USDA and USA's FDA do not run testing on GMO foods as they they consider GMOs no different than the strains of regular foods.  As genetic engineering is ideal for developing devastating military and biological weapons, I strongly feel that there's sufficient cause to outlaw GM.

Who created the BT genes to be added to Earth's Natural Seeds?  An India-based company, Mahyco ( http://www.mahyco.com) - in collaboration with Monsanto of course.

It's possible Monsanto has powerful friends to continue backing them up in GMing and spreading GMed seeds.  You can view Monsanto's powerful political friends here (one of which is Kellogg)!  Further down that page, you will also find Bill Gates with 5 stars while Safe Food Coalition has only 2 stars.  (Bill Gates is known to donate "in the name of Science" for further reasearch on genetically-modified vaccines/food.)  Obama??  Don't ask!

The prestigious medical journal The Lancet,"All policymakers must be vigilant to the possibility of research data being manipulated by corporate bodies and of scientific colleagues being seduced by the material charms of industry.  Trust is no defence against an aggressively deceptive corporate sector."

Other Monsanto News

1.  Overheard in Twitter,"GMed seeds crushed for protein and oil are being eaten by people and livestocks?  I would like to know if I am one of them!"

2.  "Monsanto says it can help save the world's starving and impoverished with GMOs. How lovely and altruistic it all sounds in theory. But in practice, it puts a stranglehold on economic and biodiversity. As Monsanto is feeding people with its GMOs, it's taking away the livelihood of the local farmers by removing the locus of production and putting it back in the good ole' US of A, lining the pockets of its top executives rather than the pockets of the farmers. In so doing, it puts the small farms out of business, and perpetuates a chronic cycle of poverty and dependence on Monsanto. What a great system. For Monsanto.

In Mexico, Monsanto's crops are cross-pollinating with the corn of the local farmers, destroying the extremely important biodiversity there. In Iowa, some organic farmers' crops have also been cross-pollinated with GM corn, disqualifying these farmers from organic status, robbing them of their right to the livelihood of their choice and reducing their income substantially. Other US farmers, experimenting with Monsanto crops, have unwittingly sold their soul and can only plant when and what Monsanto tells them. "  - Counterpunch.org

3.  MONSANTO IN OUR WATER TOO???   To enter the water business, Monsanto has acquired an equity stake in Water Health International (WHI) with an option to buy the rest of the business. The joint venture with Tata/Eureka Forbes is supposed to provide market access and fabricate, distribute, service water systems; Monsanto will leverage their brand equity in the Indian market. The joint venture route has been chosen so that "Monsanto can achieve management control over local operations but not have legal consequences due to local issues."

4.  Recently the Vatican Pope approved GM foods because the Vatican Science Academy says it's safe.

"New agronomy" may be a new buzzwords when and if frightening GMed foods are allowed to spread even more worldwide.  While new buzzwords do not hurt, GMed crops, meat, milk and vaccines do!  GMO hurt and destroy life-forms!

If you wish to do your own research on biotech companies here are a few Google terms you can use besides 'Monsanto':  Pioneer Hi-Bred, DuPont (Dupont acquired Hi-Bred on August 8th 1997), Astra + Zeneca (merger on December 12th 1998) and Novartis.
