Detecting/Getting Rid of Genetically Modified Foods
"The breeze, the birds and the bees aid cross-pollination. Wind and water move seed from field to field. Human and machine errors lead to mixing of seed during processing, distribution and planting. The same is true of grain handling. These are just a few reasons why biotech contamination is happening and will accelerate." -
editor of CropChoice
This is unfortunately true for Canada's GMed corn - their pollen may have reached as far as Mexico because wind has carried those GMed corn even before the government burnt the GMed corn crops. How do you eat safe organic foods? How can you protect organic agriculture?
Don't go out to get a
fluorometer, at least not yet! Firstly, you must only choose to eat organic foods AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AFFORD and are able to find. The other way of detecting genetically modified fruits is to
test them yourself.
I admire and respect people who've developed awesome things that make our lives easier; things like Pacemaker (requires battery changes before they die out by the way), can-opener, zips, safety-pins. But it seems that the more convenient we try to make our lives, the more artificial and unhealthy our food gets, and the worse our health becomes.
Unlike marine poisons from under-cooked seafood (those poisons are the marine animals' protective 'weapons'), many foods we eat today do not kill us overnight but their toxic elements accumulate and stay in our bodies for many years and re-appear as stubborn diseases. You do not need to ingest hidden toxins to have them wreak havoc later, because a toxic is not a nutrient - toxins from chemicals and GMed foods are not what your body needs.
There's no saying whether more GMed foods will be causing diseases that Mother Nature and all technologies in the world have no cure for.
Are we going to allow Monsanto and other biotech companies determine for us if our foods are safe enough to nourish our bodies and mind? Would corporate greed take precedence over safety and health of all living beings? How do we know we are having quality food?
B A single pot of tomatoes or potatoes (all natural and not genetically-modified of course) in your own home can make a difference to the air around you, to your health and to Earth's sustainability. [ Ask your botanist which plants are good at ridding the air of invisible toxic and cancer-causing fumes. If you need a
non-commercial insecticide formula that is not harmful to your children/environment, click here! (Always use non-GM seeds!) ]
Once you've learned how to create your own mini (or larger) garden, you'll find that it's not very difficult nor time-consuming to manage your home garden. You will be able to
- store some of your own food supply in case one day, this world no longer provides commercially-available food that are safe for consumption
- protecting yourself and your family while your green garden help to cleanse the air of harmful and cancer-causing toxic (especially from use of commercial insecticides etc).
There are many free gardening resources online for you to check out:zHealthinfo has a pleasant page of "uncontrollable gardening links" on their site.
Aarons' Environmental BlogPractical DIY Home Gardening TipsC For me, it really makes sense to avoid GMed foods. Check out these
top 10 bizarre GMO (who knows if there are people who will try to capitalise on making "medicines" with a GMed spider for example!) The Grapple (looks like an apple and taste like grapes), Graisin (enlarged raisins to please Japanese consumers) and wine or anything else from the hybrid Rubber Cork Tree are what you'd most like to avoid.
I would also avoid anything from the main GM crops which are
soy, corn, cottonseed and canola. That means some brands of corn oil and canola oil for cooking, are affected. (I eat out lesser.) [
Coconut oilis healthiest non cancer-causing cooking oil and is NOT fattening.

1999 statistics: 55% of America's soybeans and 35% of America's corn are GMed. - Justin Gillis, Anne Swardson (Washington Post writers) from the article "Crop Busters Take on Monsanto".
D GM sugar from sugar beets have been introduced by end of 2008, and yes - that means sugar you are eating now may also be genetically-modified.
Sugar that is not GMed may already be unhealthy especially when they're in almost every food available from breakfast coffees to dinners. (
Dr. Nancy Appleton (clinical nutritionist) compiled a list of 146 reasons on 'How Sugar is Ruining Your Health' in her book Lick the Sugar Habit.) Also good to note:
Removing sugar from a cookie does not turn it into a health food.
Adding fruits to an unhealthy food doesn't make it healthier.
Replacing coffee with Diet Coke (or some other new fizzy zero-calorie health drinks) and hamburgers doesn't make it a healthy meal either.
Replacing normal sugar with artificial sugar may be more harmful than you think.
To my relief, there are currently
a few other sugar alternatives one can consider:
- Grow your own Stevia plants (apologies it's a French site) - room-dry the leaves before grinding them to your own sugary powder (If anyone can confirm they're not GMed plants, please leave a comment - thank you!)
- Use fresh fruit juice (from non-GMed fruits of course). My favourite is simple apple juice which I keep for no more than 2 days in the fridge and yes, that means I have to juice almost other day. No chemical preservatives except for a little organic tumeric powder!
- Use Stevia-based powder/products that has no added xylitol or sugar/wood alcohol, or any other chemicals and GM products. (Xylitol is naturally made in our bodies but in some products they've been chemically-extracted from fruits. Anything that is chemically-extracted CANNOT be safe and thus it cannot be considered "organic". Sugar/wood alcohols are pretty much digested by our bodies as if it is alcohol, and we all know alcohol even when not drank regularly is not healthy.)
What about honey? Wild natural honey is rich in enzymes but it is also a natural high-fructose sugar.
Agave or blue
agave nectar and
maple syrup are also similarly
high-fructose.
Barley Malt Syrup? Most malt syrups have minute traces of MSG (
aspartame). Avoid any processed foods with the words "isomalt".
Fructo-Oligosaccharide (FOS for short) aka neosugar is found in more than 450 products in Japan. Previously free of suspicions, there are now currently concerns for its safety. If you have additional information on FOS, please feel free to comment!
Was told that many aspartame victims now turned to
JustlikeSugar. I have
no answers to sugars from Molasses, Sorghum, Dates Sugar, Brown Rice Sugar and Wasonbon Sugarbecause each of them have their own merits. It just
takes one food additive to make everything unsafe or unhealthy, so I urge you to do your own research
.
To avoid potential artificial sugar (I call them GMed sugar!), I've personally switched to pure cocoa powder from Van Houten (product of Switzerland and distributed in Singapore and Malaysia). I also avoid all products with sucrose (another artificial sugar).
I personally avoid
Zerose™ sweetener which is produced by
Cargill Inc. because previously, they've added aspartame to their line of Soda drinks. You can find
a list of artificial sugar by manufacturers/distributors (this is only a partial list but you may want to save, print/bookmark it or even add comments to expand on the list which is updated now and then.)
Basically, I am avoiding any products made by manufacturers who've once placed Aspartame in their products.
What sugar products do you avoid and why? Feel free to leave a comment! Your input may save more lives!
E While you want to avoid
GMed soy products, you may also want to
eat only fermented soy products like Tempeh and Miso.
This is where respected Dr, Mercola was misunderstood at http://www.soya.be/mercola.php The dangers of soy Dr. Mercola was referring to was based on UNFERMENTED soy products and not on all soya products. Fermented soy products do not have the toxics that unfermented soy products have.
Unfermented soya beans in its raw natural state has (courtesy of Westonaprice.org):
- high levels of phytic acid - phytic acid reduces assimilation of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. In simple terms this means calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc are NOT absorbed by the human body. Phytic acid in soy is not neutralized by ordinary preparation methods such as soaking, sprouting and long, slow cooking.
- trypsin inhibitors that interferes with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders.
- phytoestrogens that disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women
- free glutamic acid or MSG, a potent neurotoxin, is formed during soy food processing and additional amounts are added to many soy foods.
Children of the same race, same age, geographic location, largely same diets and have parents of similiar heights, were picked for a study. The study found Asian children who do not drink soy milk are taller than those who do. Surprised findings, isn't it?
Do go for fermented soy products (most of our soy sauce is fermented); if you're uncomfortable with soy beans, consider other food alternatives like black beans, sesame seeds, walnuts, snowpeas (naturally sweet and may be a suitable natural sugar), etc This Earth is abundant in nutritious foods - you just need to be more aware by exploring!
Unfermented soy products was the reason for goitre for a friend of mine. While her mum recovered from goitre (her mum is not a fan of bean-curds), my friend's goitre did not improve - both were consuming the same prescription medicines.
Alternatives for unfermented soy products you may want to consider: Azuki beans (sometimes spelled as "adzuki" beans), black beans, miso beans (good for soup and salads)
Currently there is no legislation to protect consumers from soy toxins in raw unfermented soy products. The good news is, you can choose to avoid it (as I am) if you wish.
F If you're still buying conventional (non-organic) produce, make sure you wash your conventional whole foods thoroughly. This will at least help get off any toxic insecticide that may have been sprayed on them. A much more safer way is to buy organic fruits and vegetables because you know they are not genetically modified (you still HAVE to wash them thoroughly). (If you want to know, my family uses a Fruits & Vegetable Washer from
Environne.com )
The bad news is GMO-ed insectides and herbicides containing the Bt-toxin CANNOT be washed off. I'd be very interested to know if Environne.com or someone else has an effective alternative to this. Please leave a comment!
G If you're very serious than the average organic product shopper, make up your own list of trusted organic farms and soil producers around the world (and please share it!) Organic farmers are
more likely to co-operate with food & drink manufacturers who are ethical enough to refuse placing/using chemically-extracted products and GM ingredients. [

J Feedback to your restaurants, hawker centres and supermarkets, farmers and agri businesses that you prefer foods with no artificial sugar and no GMed foods. You can do your part: one kind action can have the ability to influence decisions of those in the food industry chain. Otherwise you can shop and cook at home more often.
In the UK, Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd had responded favourably to consumers' demand for non-GM food products. Perhaps supermarkets in other countries can do something by drawing supermarkets and retailers into a consortium for non-GM foods.
Tell your country's authorities and ministers about the GM 'monsters'THEY may be feeding their families. If hazardous genes exist in GMed food, there's a danger that crops and meat could be introduced into the human food chain. You don't need to be in Europe or a European to write to your Ministers:
samples of letters to your ministers can be found here. Here's
an open letter from World Scientists to all governments concerning GMO
Many groups worldwide are calling for a ban on GMed foods due to "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" and many other GM-induced foods. There are also more than 200 groups representing farmers etc in the USA and Canada have called for a ban/moratorium on the introduction of the next major proposed food crop and this number is expected to grow as more people become more aware of the dangers of GMed foods. There's a limit to what these farmers can do. Definitely, your appetite for safer and more nutritious foods can push your authorities and ministers to do something beneficial. Do let them know!
Genetic engineering has shown to produce novel toxins, viruses and super viruses that are have never existed nor recorded in Science. New hybrid viruses with characteristics that NOBODY knows!
Genetic engineering is now also known as "Frankenstein Technology" or "Nightmar Tech".
Famed Canadian Geneticist David Suzuki , author of Gene Ethics, has openly admitted he'll stay away from GMO and wouldn't let their family members eat GM food.
Professor Bob Orskov, director of the International Feed Resource Unit (Aberdeen, Scotland), said he would not drink milk from cows fed the genetically modified (GM) fodder maize (corn). Like many, I cannot bear the thought of unforeseen consequences for humanity due to the introduction and ingestion of GMed food, vaccines, drugs and insulin. I have recently pledged to say NO to GMed foods and I hope with the information presented to you made possible by the many people I am most grateful to, I hope you will also do something HEALTHY and SENSIBLE today!
