You would think that it is reassuring for asthma patients to use asthma inhalers (or drugs). One spray and it's done. Wind trachea opens and you can breath again.
Recent studies conducted on this topic (of asthmatic medications) disagree.
Since 1997, Salmeterol (aka
Serevent, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline aka GSK) and Formoterol, to low-dose inhaled corticosteroids for asthma patients, was NOT adequately controlled with steroids. But the irony is, both Salmeterol and Formotero, provoke severe asthma attacks!
Some patients taking Salmetero have had trouble breathing and required intubations, the insertion of a tube into the throat forcing open the airways 24/7. Salmetero/Serevent is an aerosol spray (inhaled steriod).
There are
some known adverse reactions of using inhaled steriods for asthma:
#1. higher risk of thrush (yeast infection in mouth);
#2. bone density (osteoporosis which is the thinning of bones);
#3. stunted height in some asthmatic children;
#4. formation of cataracts, glaucoma, mood changes and weight gain.
Fenoterol, another beta-agonist, has been confirmed as the cause of epidemic deaths amongst asthma sufferers in New Zealand.
According to
Yourlawyer.com, other asthma drugs like
Advair, Foradil and Symbicort might be responsible for about 14,000 deaths in America alone. And according to
Physorg.com, these drugs did not reduce severity of asthma symptoms as measured by hospital admissions, or the need for steroid medication.
Several recent studies have linked Salmeterol and Formoterol to increased risks of severe asthma attacks, hospitalizations, and even death. In 2006, a
Dr. Shelley Salpeter of Stanford University in California pointed out that both long-acting and short-acting beta agonists (asthma drugs) can cause the user (asthma patient) to develop tolerance to the drug. This leads to worser reactions to asthma triggers.
"Today's controversy revolves around whether combining them with inhaled corticosteroids eliminates their risk. Recent data suggest that the combination is still more dangerous than (the us of) corticosteroids alone." , said Dr. Salpeter.
In late 2008, an FDA advisory committee has recommended that both Salmeterol and Formoterol, be banned for use.
Do you know Prilosec, a proton pump inhibitor and a common companion drug to asthma drugs (for heartburn or acid reflux), increases/accelerates development of osteoporosis (brittle bones)?
On top of this, Prilosec interacts with Clopidogrel (Plavix, a drug for heart patients), by "clumping" blood platelets inside blood vessels and therefore choking the heart of any oxygen supply.
Prilosec is also used for peptic ulcer diseases. Many prescription drugs have NOT been tested for interactions with drugs for other chronic ailments!
And if you're wondering why 2 or 3 panadols (over a 12-hour period) do not work for you anymore, you now know that the human body can get insensitive to prescription drugs.
Many asthma sufferers have disrupted sleep partially due to prescription drugs too. Asthma severity and deaths are up whereas relevant knowledge is not!
Some physicians argue that medical treatment for asthmatics are worthless if patients do not take recommended medication. Do you think this is really the reason? What do you think? Talk back by commenting below!
