I and my brother must be a few of those odd people, I trust my family doctor but selectively on the information he gives.  My brother will only visit his doctor for the medical certificate his employer requires.  He too, turns to natural whole foods, to help his body recover from common flu and fevers.  He did not touch his prescribed aspirin after his knee surgery (worn out due to over exertion - he's a suba-dive and mountain-climbing fanatic) and he was walking (limping) without a crutch by second week.  His friend who had the "same thing" took more than 3 months to just walk, blamed my brother for "spoiling the employees' market'.  lol

The part where my dermatologist told me to keep myself OUT of sunlight (the truth about sunblock), an advise which I've been following for years, is now "thrown" into the shredder.   Don't get me wrong.  I have utmost respect for my dermatologist.  She was (and still is) one of the best skin specialists in Singapore.  To some elite I-am-a-rich-person, they boast that you don't find her in government-subsidized hospitals.

She was genuinely concerned for my health problems and was ready to spring into action when I told her the NSC (National Skin Centre) had no idea what I had.

It was in Europe (2nd doctor) that I was diagnosed to have Psoriasis.  I didn't even wait 5 minutes and it was my turn.  It was also the shortest concultation I ever had - the queue behind me was long!  I later realise the European doctor whom I saw was very famous - Europeans know who he is if you just mentioned his name.

And my Singaporean dermatologist was the 3rd doctor I saw (2nd doctor in Singapore).   She gave me a more complete picture of my auto-immune disease which turned out accurately-predicted - it affected my left knee joint and even my toe nails.

These 5 years, I have asked if I needed to be seeing a bone and joints specialist anytime.  I recently stopped asking that question - thanks to doctors who share their valuable information online.

The problem is, most doctors are trained to treat a disease, not prevent it.  When they are hit with Cancer, some are even more clueless.  Naturally they turn to their colleagues who are "cancer specialists".

I remember a Chinese Sinseh with liver trouble.   He was a man who could with ONE SINGLE JERKING MOVEMENT, re-aligned your displaced knee joint - something that conventional "western" doctors were not able to do so.  He was also a skilled acupuncturist!

He could have treated himself with Chinese herbs and by correcting his diet.   He ate a lot of meat and drank beer often.  And I think he misplaced his trust.  He did not even trust the very things he recommended (Chinese herbs) to his patients, etc because he told his wife to check him into a conventional doctor.

He died within a month.  I imagined him taking all the prescription drugs with side-effects which further aggravated his liver disease.

So what kind of DOCTORS can I trust?  Which medical authorities/associations should you place your trust in?

I did remember my mom telling me that back in the 80s, where Sinsehs were highly regarded, her younger brother whom had just twisted a few muscles and broken a few bones had them all back in shape in less than 30 minutes (of rather torturous agony)with the skill of such people. I'm not one for pain so I'd still rather stick to the conventional way of medicines, painkillers and a truckload of rest.

Errata: concultation should be "consultation".

Ah, Kelly, how you are right! Actually visit to the doctor is the waisting of time. I check all their recommendations via Internet or special books. Especially I am afraid of medicinal prescriptions for my daughter. It's so difficult to find clever and kind doctor!
