Three Rules On How Not To Market On Twitter

TechnologyInternet

twitter-icon-buttonJust like with any new form of online communication, Twitter is under attack by spammers and overly-aggressive marketers. If you are someone who is using Twitter to network and market yourself and/or your business, you have to find a balance. If you don’t, people are just going to see you and your business in a negative light. So how do you find that elusive balance? A good place to start is to go by these three simple rules:

Rule 1: Never- EVER- join any kind of service or site which promises you will have more Twitter followers by sending out a Tweet about their service or site.

I (along with a lot of other people) have been receiving a lot of tweets lately from other Twitter users who inform me of a new way to add hundreds and even thousands of Twitter followers by clicking on the link in the tweets. I don’t know if these people realized it at the time but this is a great example of spam. So if you receive a tweet like the one I just described, don’t follow their advice. And if you keep getting this kind of tweet from them- either block them or unfollow them.

Rule 2: Let people know if you are promoting a blog post of yours

Ode to Twitter

EntertainmentHumor

O, fowl Twitter,
Destroyer of my time
Ruiner of management
The reason I am behind.

O, gracious Twitter,
Responsible for a whole
One point eight percent
My site traffic total.

O, deadly Twitter,
Evil pillar of waste
Stripping my attention
Causing me to make haste.

O, wonderful Twitter,
Bringer of great distraction
To cause my mind to leap
At every promised satisfaction.

I hate you, Dear Twitter

Twittering Sculpture Speaks Art Tweets Aloud

The video above shows a Twitter based art project sculpture by Márton András Juhász entitled "Where is your art?". He connected various hacked electronic toys on poles to the internet. They are actually robotic toys with their outer skins removed to show them as just the raw parts they are made of. Anytime someone tweets the word "art" on Twitter, the sculpture will speak that entire tweet aloud using text to speech software. The video doesn't clearly show this, but you get the idea. If anyone knows where this is being exhibited, leave it in the comments please.

Why you've got to Tweet

TechnologyInternet

Twitter has become a great way for both bloggers and businss owners to get subscribers and followers. If you’re not Twittering, you better start!

For the few of you out there who don’t know what I’m talking about: Twitter is a free utility that you can use for sending social messages to your friends and subscribers. You post mini entries – this is also called micro blogging. Can you see the potential right in front of you? Over the past day alone, my Twitter follower count has grown with 300 people. Imagine you have a product to promote or a blog you want more traffic for? With Twitter you reach a MASSIVE amount of people with one micro message where you can add links as well. In 2008 Twitter had over 3 million members sending each other messages. Probably many, many more today. Of course you probably don’t have something to share with all of them but even when you have found your niche, there is a great market right there waiting.

A few tips on using Twitter:

1. You have 140 characters available for each Tweet. Use them wisely. Don’t write about your dog or your house plant that’s dying. Give people a glimpse of what you’re doing online – share important and interesting links, for example. Think of something catchy to make people notice you.

2. Offer advice and help. Are you an expert blogger or a trained chef? Offer your skills on Twitter to form a network that keeps following you. Make it worthwhile to follow you.

3. Always link back to your site if you give advice. There isn’t space for much with 140 characters available so always give a link with more help. This also gives you the extra website traffic you might crave.

Twitter tools:

Tweet-r : Share files on Twitter
TwitThis: Type the URL you want to share on Twitter
Twitterlicious: Read and write Tweets easily.

There are hundreds of nice Twitter tools out there so I suggest you visit Mashable and check it out. Another great link: http://mashable.com/2008/05/24/14-more-twitter-tools/.

If you’re asking yourself why you should Twitter when you’ve got Facebook and Myspace and Google FriendConnect, take it from me: You will learn stuff, find cool websites, build a network of potential blog visitors/buyers, keep up with current news (inspiration for blog posts perhaps) and you get to share your knowledge with the world in a new, exciting way.

Go Twitter.
