Defending the indefensible

Greetings.

Jewish date:  23 ’Adhar 5770 (Parashath Wayyaqhel-Fequdhe).

Today’s holiday:  Feast of Frances of Rome (Roman Catholicism).

Worthy cause of the day:  “Alliance for Justice:  Call for Investigation of Missing Torture Emails”, “MoveOn.org Political Action: Tell the party establishment to stay out”, and “CARE:  Voices Against Violence”.

Topic 1:  “When Court Jews Defend Moral Cowards”.  This article by Rav Shmuley Boteach has much less to do with court Jews than moral cowards who defend the indefensible.  Particularly taking a beating is Pope Pius XII, who is infamous for his failure to do much of anything against the Nazis and all their moral atrocities during World War II.  Religion is supposed to be about what is true, not what would be politically expedient to believe or what we want to believe.  Do note that all glossing over the Armenian genocide

Such a Fuss - Can Israel Do No Good?

Law and SocietyMiddle East

Have you ever seen such a ruckus raised by everyone over what Israel may have done in Dubai to a known Hamas leader, Mahmoud Al Mabhouh? You'd think that Israel committed a heinous crime, when the crime which was committed was the Hamas leader's himself, that of murdering two Israeli soldiers and forging a connection between Hamas and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Hamas is classified as a "terrorist organization" by the United States and by Europe, but nobody accused Dubai of hosting this criminal. They only accused Israel of doing what nobody had the courage (or worse, inclination) to do, which is to eliminate him. Israel may have done just that, and for it, has been heaped with vitriolic condemnation from the world at large. And it isn't even certain that Israel's Mossad carried out this hit. According to Caroline Glick,
What the initial European reaction to [Dubai Chief-of-Police] Tamim's allegations shows is that blaming Israel has become Europe's default foreign policy. It apparently never occurred to the Europeans that Israel might not be responsible for the hit. And it certainly never occurred to them that cutting off intelligence ties with Israel will harm them more than Israel.

Dates That Serve To Define The World

Tomorrow, December 7, marks the anniversary of "a date that will live in infamy", the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This was the event that brought the United States into WW II, ultimately leading to the defeat of what was then a overwhelming threat to the security of the world. Had the Japanese not committed this act, and had the United States not entered the war, who is to know the state of the world today.

That hypothetical gives way to the actual reality of the day, that of the global threat of both terrorism through "conventional" means, as well as through nuclear weapons that could bring global devastation in seconds. Let us never forget that those who wish to control and dictate through the belief that all in the world should be a certain way, whether ethnically, religiously or both, can only be defeated in one way.

What if Hitler Won the War?”

Guest Post by  James Diehl

Between 1941 and 1945, tens of thousands of American men responded to the grave threat posed on the world by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. For nearly four years, these heroic men put their lives on hold to fight against evil on the battlefields of Europe, Asia and Africa.

They were selfless men who, almost to a man, felt they had a responsibility to defend the “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.” They’ll tell you today that they’re not heroes, but that they were merely doing their jobs.

Those beliefs and values are a big reason why men and women of that era became known as the greatest generation in history, as Tom Brokaw so eloquently stated a few years ago. The men who survived the horrors of World War II often withstood a dozen or more close calls with death – they are heroes, as are the ones who never made it home.

It makes me shiver to think what life would be like today had the Allies not won the war. America would certainly be a very different place in the 21st century, as would the free world.

Think about it for a second. What if the Axis had won the war and imposed their will on the United States, mandating a similar fate to the one the Allies imposed on Germany in the post-World War II era?

The price of appeasement. Remember Hitler?

Appeasement

If we learned anything from World War II, it was that appeasing a madman is merely an opportunity for the madman to accomplish his goals. France and Britain did their level best to give Hitler what he wanted in order to avoid war. The result: Hitler ignored the treaties and the protests and did what he wanted.

He bought time and took advantage of governments that he knew did not have the stomach for war. Does any of this sound familiar? Read the following clip and replace the names where appropriate with Iran, United States, U.N. Resolutions, France, Britain, Russia and China.

These are dangerous times, and if we don't learn from history we are destined to repeat it!

Return Of A Steel Symbol Of Strength

A 58 ton, 36 foot symbol of American strength and resolve

Removed from the rubble of the World Trade Center site and maintained in a hangar at Kennedy Airport, this beam is being returned to Ground Zero today to take its' honored place at the site of the 9/11 Museum. It is covered with memorials honoring some of those who perished in the worst terrorist attack ever to occur on United States soil.

This return stands as a sign to those around the world that the United States will never cower or back down, and that we will always defend and defend strongly our society and way of life against any and all ideologies bent on trying to destroy us. The return of this beam offers us the opportunity to remember those innocent people that died in the attacks by simply going to work or by getting on a plane, and all of those responders who gave their lives trying to save them.

As the Jewish people have said in reference to the Holocaust Never Forget, Never Again

Defiance

EntertainmentMedia

Defiance starring Daniel Craig (aka James Bond) and the guy who was the Manchurian Candidate in the latest version of that film. Liev something. I think he was Wolverine too.

Anyway, I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. I knew that having Craig in it would mean stuff would probably blow up and he'd probably spend some time looking like he wanted to kill people. What I didn't expect was for him to (sort of) be the pacifist in this movie.

The movie tells the story of the Jews of southern Russia and their flight into the forest. Some of them have a thirst for revenge against the Nazis and join with the local partisans. Others, like Craig, look for survival and work to support the partisans in supply and repair and so forth, but do not participate in bloodshed except in self-defense.

The movie is based on true events and some of those depicted in the movie are still alive today.
