How World of Warcraft is like Life

Humanities & CultureQuotes and Insights

Yes, if you haven’t figured it out by now one of my favorite online games is World of Warcraft. But not for the reasons you may think, nor am I addicted.

When you first start out in WoW, as its called by its rabidly loyal fan base (probably should write another post on that…), you begin at level one. Currently the maximum level you can reach is 80. You start out with quests which range from anything to having to hunt down and kill a thief to finding a stupid chicken that is running away from you while little fishies jump out of the water and bite you. The quests get harder and harder as time goes on, but at this point you are starting to catch on with the technicalities in how to do certain things. You are gradually leveling up, yet haven’t met anyone. Don’t worry, some of the quests become so hard that you cannot finish them without a guild or calling on friends you run across in game. Just like life eh?

Well, that’s not even the end of it. You’ve officially just started. Soon you may join a guild, think of your friend group in real life, befriend someone and become good friends, and start venturing into other things. Now you are starting out with responsibilities. Guild rules, friends, quests, better gear, and so the list starts to grow. Just like real life eh? (PS, the guys who built this game were pure geniuses are they not?)

Why I no longer play Warcraft, but sometimes wish I did

When people mention  World of Warcraft(WOW) to friends, family, co-workers, or whomever, the responses are usually extreme in the direction of love and hate. There are millions of active players right now, I think the most recent number posted was 11 million to be exact. It’s a global game with separate servers in Europe, North America, and Asia to support the massive amount of players that are living in this world around the clock. I originally started playing WOW shortly after it was launched in November 2004. I didn’t really have much of an understanding for the game, but there isn’t a very steep learning curve either. I played on a server with a real life friend, and enjoyed it as any other game. Just something fun to pass the time. I was about to give it up after just a few months because I wasn’t really getting much out of the game and I was usually playing alone anyways. The social aspect of the game was completely avoiding me.

Cataclysm - Not for me

I have refrained from commenting on Blizzard's new World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm, until now because I was not sure if I should believe the leaks and wanted to wait for an official announcement. Well, as it turns out the leaks were true and Blizzard will be revamping Azeroth, adding new races, and adding/converting some new content for level-capped players.

Torn asunder?

As someone who was a devoted WoW junkie until May of this year, I knew that the next expansion had a chance to lure me back. Warcraft always experiences a surge in returning players when a new expansion lands, and Cataclysm will be no different. After reading the major features of the expansion I can guarantee that I will not be among the flood of ex-pats venturing back into a newly remade Azeroth.

Below are the major features announced for Cataclysm as well as my personal reaction to each:

Two New Playable Races: Adventure as one of two new races–the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.

Isn’t It Funny?

I think it is. People are getting picky about what they comment on lately. Or so I've seen in my travels around the blogophere. If you don't relate to whatever other people are writing about, you get no comments or recognition whatsoever. Take for example, my last couple posts...

I wrote about my newest adventure in World of Warcraft and I got NO responses. I had to ask for a comment. Well, I didn't have to but someone asked me to comment on their post so I asked them to comment on mine. But it's pretty sad, isn't it. But then a few days later (days people!!), I write about wanting to get a Wii Fit an start working out. I got 5 comments in less then a minute. I find that pretty pathetic. In all actuality, people were skipping over my WoW post and commenting on the posts below it.

Personally, I use StumbleUpon

A Whole New Start

Since my casting out of PnP I've joined two other guilds. One I was in didn't last to long since I joined and now I'm in another that is working out pretty well. I think the problem with PnP was that they did their raids and instance runs on the weekends, and if mom called I'd leave and they'd have their little shit fits. It's their loss really, but now with the new guild, Wetworks, we raid during the weeknights. And weekends are free for us to do whatever or not log on and everyone is happy and they go about their real lives. It's great. And I love it. It's really working out being a healer instead of a DPS. :) So happy!!
