If you just can’t wait for the ZuneHD and want to get your hands on portable media player now, you won’t see this price again until sometime after the HD’s launch.

Zune_80GB_Multimedia_Player___Home_Audio_Video_Pack851Detail Woot has the Zune 80GB (normally $250) with the home A/V dock (normally somewhere north of $50 online) for $149.99 today. That’s a great deal on a great PMP. I have yet to have an issue with my Zune80.

Zune HD Rumors and Power Consumption

TechnologyGadgets & Mobile

imageZune Thoughts published two interesting articles yesterday regarding the upcoming ZuneHD. The first is one that a lot of people have been wondering about, and while it’s still a rumor, it’s worth mentioning. It’s starting to look more and more like the ZuneHD will be using the Nvidia Tegra processor to run the show. Again, it’s still a rumor as it comes by way of some info gleaned from a conversation at Computex back in June. IF this proves true however, it’s great news. The Tegra chip uses very little power and yet can really push the video on a device:

"Nvidia's Tegra is a great platform and it needs only 150mW to decode a video stream and only 20mW to play audio which makes it a perfect candidate for such players like Zune HD. Nvidia already showed some netbook and tablet products based on Tegra at Computex. These were probably all based on Tegra 650, the high end Tegra part as Nvidia likes to call it, while Zune HD will probably based on the mid-range Tegra 600."

To continue on the power consumption front, the site also found a video of a rep from Samsung talking about the AMOLED display. The same one that will be used in the ZuneHD. Because OLED doesn’t require backlighting, it’s a much more energy efficient design.

Overdrive to Provide Audio Compatibility with iPod

TechnologyGadgets & Mobile

image You’ll soon be able to access the audio book catalogs of top publishers via Overdrive simply by upgrading to the latest software. Publishers include Random House, Penguin Audio, BBC Audiobooks, Tantor Media and others.

In June, when users upgrade to version 3.2 of the Overdrive software on Windows PCs, they’ll be able to start easily transffering their books to their iPod, other Apple devices, Microsoft Zune and other PMPs.

"iPod-compatibility instantly adds value to digital media catalogs powered by OverDrive and further expands the collection to the millions of iPod owners eager to download from the library," said David Burleigh, director of marketing for OverDrive. "A simple software upgrade is all it takes to allow the transfer of thousands of additional bestsellers to the popular media player."

If you enjoy reading books by listening to them, keep an eye out for the latest software from Overdrive sometime in the middle of June.

Gizmodo Grabs Video of the ZuneHD

TechnologyGadgets & Mobile

image We’re finally getting some first looks of the ZuneHD via Gizmodo. The tech site got a few minutes to play with the new device and was able to get some pictures and video.

To me, it looks a little small. That would probably confirm that at least the first generation of the new Zune will be SSD only, which doesn’t bode well for storage junkies like myself.

Hopefully we’ll get some more info soon on some of the specs that we haven’t had a chance to hear about yet!

Head over to Gizmodo to see all of the shots they got and take a look at the video below:

Microsoft xYz Combines Zune and Xbox?

TechnologyGadgets & Mobile

Team Xbox claims to have sources inside Microsoft who are working on a new device that "sits somewhere in-between the Xbox and Zune platforms."

Whether or not this device is the fabled "Pink" Zune Phone is unclear, but Team Xbox is pretty sure that the device they've heard about lacks a phone.

Codenamed the "xYz" during discussions, the device will feature a WVGA touchscreen and a series of new hardware features not currently seen on the market (these features are unclear, and could include WiMax or graphics processing chipsets). It will implement Live Anywhere in a way that unites Microsoft's digital storefronts, allowing music and movies to play on the xYz and Xbox.

The xYz is meant to compete with Apple, Sony, Nintendo, but also Google through implementation of Live Search—maps, news, etc.

All in all, the device described by Team Xbox sounds a lot like a PSP with smarter connectivity. And while such a product would certainly be interesting, especially from the company that's (imho) the leading console developer in the world, it really needs the phone angle pointed out in the Mary-Jo Foley device to compete for our precious pocket space
